    tweak the settings first

    then try different drivers

Ive had stuttering issues with CS:S, it was the driver.

Use 169.09 for such an old game.

Before changing your driver, try making sure your power settings are listed as "High Performance" and defragment your hard drive.

If those two things don't work, THEN change the driver.

I don't see how defragging your hard drive would cause horrendous stuttering in a game (??).. certainly check the power settings though.

Certain stuttering, characterized by frequent pauses in gameplay and disk activity, is caused by highly fragmented game files. Games that use large data files are particularly susceptible to fragmentation, resulting in poor performance. It is rare, but I've had cases where serious stuttering issues were caused entirely by a game .dat file breaking into 1000+ fragments.

I've read this too, Valve strongly suggests defragging your hard drvie after dloading something on steam because as you turn into a new environment, new textures have to be loaded - if these textures are all over your HD, this will cause stuttering?

I think that's what they were getting @, at any rate.

Well, I'll try that, and if not, guess it's back to 169.04 for me...

Shame, I really liked 175.16 for Bioshock, saw a nice jump in performance.
