Hey guys. I want to buy a new laptop in june but i am unsure on what graphics card to get. How much more powerful is the 8600m gt vs the gs. also...will i be able to find a laptop with the gt in it for about $1700? I am considering the asus F3sv B-1, but if there is a notebook for the same price with the gt in it i would rather get that? whats the chances of this happening? should i just get the F3sv-B1 or just wait?

Oh and this is in the us.

Not sure what country you are from but the Zepto 6625WD and 6224W have a GT. Asus will bring out an A8 with a GT also I believe.

the V1J Santa Rosa model will feature the 8600GT. It might be out of your price range though.

As Tim said, the Compal IFL90 will support the 8600M GT, and you can configure one of those for under $1700 when they come out next month.

Well, with the HEL-80 you could do T7200, 2 GB RAM, 100 GB 7200 RPM HD, wireless, Geforce Go 7600, the whole package for $1650. Compal is telling us that the IFL-90 won't break the bank compared to the HEL-80, so that's good news, I guess

hmmm I dont know if I wanna spend 1900 dollars...how future proof would the G1s be?? Should i even consider the 8600m gs? Like...on new egg they got the F3SV-x1 for 1400 something..but doesnt come with that new N wireless card/finger print reader and screen resolution isnt as good as F3SV-B1.
I heard that the Go7700 scores higher on 3dmark..so is there a point of getting the 8600m gs over 7700 performance wise? 8600 gs only got dx10 to add some new effects...i mean whats the point if the fps isnt better? Help me out if im wrong...i would love the 8600gs to be stronger then 7700. if i can find a 8600m gt thats same price as gs of course i would get that but price is an issue...heres hoping i can!

    Go7700
    Radeon X1700
    8600m Gs

The Graphics card i have in my desktop is a Radeon x850 pro 256 agp. 1 gig of ram. pentium 4 w 2.8ghz processor.

That site is rubbish. Those figures dont mean anything because they do not show real world performance. According to that site an mobility x1800 isbetter than a 7900 gs go and that is VERY MUCH NOT TRUE. What about a mobile X800 xt versus a 7900 gs go. According to that site the x800 xt is faster than the 7900 gs go when, again, is NOT TRUE. Please dont take that site for granted.

Hmm...Guess I just gotta wait for the new Ati or Geforce cards to be reviewed. I really want a graphics card in my Laptop thats better than my X850pro. If i could find a card thats as powerful as a 7900gs in a 15.4" would be a dream...wish we could just switch out graphics cards in laptops like desktops...I saw that new C90 from asus but....Battery life looks really junk.

It's between 500-1,000 3DMark06 points. We don't have real world benchmarks because nobody has compared the 8600M GS to an 8600M GT yet in an actual game, but 1,000 3DMark points is pretty significant.

Here are real world benchmarks from the 8600M GS (256MB) from a review of Samsung R70 with C2D 1.8ghz, 2GB Ram at notebookcheck.com (German):

    source and more details

I think there is still alot of room for improvment with new drivers and so on.

the 8600GT reviews ive seen put it around 3900 3dmark06.. pretty big performance jump and with those low clocks theres plenty of room to overclock.

I think the 8700M will only be for 17" laptops. The G1s only just came out. Dont think they will refresh it in the next few months.

I don't think the G1S will be refreshed with the 8700M because I think it's for 17" laptops only (I'm with wave on this one).

The only confirmed notebook that I know of that carries the 8700M GT is the Clevo D901C, which is a 17" monster with dual 8700M GT's in SLI.

I don't know how fast a X850pro is in 3dmark05, but i know a (NOT MOBILE) X800XT (PE?) can reach more then 6000 points. So that still is a very powerfull card i guess. But i think this card won't be as fast in the newest games because it doesn't have shader model 3.0.

Dude if you're wanting a computer that's powerful and future proof, I'd suggest getting an Asus C90S. The C90S is claimed to be the world's most upgradeable laptop. It's a barebone with an 8600M GT and it can upgrade the GPU to any future MXM II graphics card. You should check it out at www.milestonepc.com, www.gentechpc.com, and www.geared2play.com

Thanks for the info guys...looks like more than likely the 8600gt is the card to get. you guys know if there are gonna be laptops with the 8600gt in them for 1500-1700 or less, less would be awesome.

Hmm the compal IFL90 sounds good, can get it for 1600...sux it doesnt ship till mid june though. I can get a dell e1705 for 1500 with the 7900gs in it...dont know if i want a 17" though. You guys think the 8600gt will be better with dx10 than the 7900gs?

You can get a smaller and lighter notebook that will rival the Geforce Go 7900GS' power in the IFL90.

The golden rule of thumb is, if you MUST get the laptop now because you absolutely need it, then just get it. If you can wait, then just wait. The latter point is especially relevant right now considering Santa Rosa and the first generation of mobile DX10 graphics cards were released just a few weeks ago, and notebook makers are refreshing their lineups throughout the summer (June-August) to integrate DX10 and Santa Rosa technology into their notebooks.

Looks like I will be getting The IFL90 when it comes out, or if i can find an asus besides the G1s that has the 8600gt then i will get that really like the features of the asus line.

The G1s Dosent appeal to me, Its to big and ugly IMHO. I like the F3 series which I think they will put a GT or equivilant card in sooner or later, Also the new Asus model carrying the x2500 from Ati might be worth a look. The V1J Santa rosa update has the 8600GT in it and depending on price that might end up being my end choice.
