    Hi

Im getting a tremendous headache... :D

Not long ago, i posted a thread about the ATI HD2300 vs the NVIDIA 8400GS

most people agreed that the 8400 gs was about 30% faster than the HD2300, however, i have just seen this:

    HD2300 3dmark05 (tested personnally in a shop) - 2240 points
    8400gs 3dmark05 ( http://www.notebookcheck.pl/Recenzja-Compal-FT00.4348.0.html) - 2490points

then, they are pretty similar, arent they?

    Jolulure,
I am guessing the difference of the CPU is what is making the scores so close.
For example, a c2d 1.6 vs anotehr c2d 2.4 will affect the 3dmarks score significantly. Since the set up for both machine were mentioned; so the scores should not be comparable.

ok dragonpet... my headache just went away :D

well, so, imagine you are looking for a laptop for university, and u want something small, light and good for gaming... would you change from a 12.1" laptop with ati HD2300 to a 14,1" with 8400gs (Compal IFT00)??

is it worth the gaming performance boost?

    thanks! :)

If you're gaming on the notebooks screen, I'd go the 14" anyways, just for an easier to view screen for longer periods.

Depends how important the games are to you. In my opinion, a 14.1" laptop with that card would be my choice if I was taking my laptop around with me to lectures and suchlike, as I consider it small enough, yet the graphics card is OK for playing the games I want at fair resolutions and details. I think this because I play games often on my laptop, and I like to play games with rather taxing graphics requirements, at times.

For you, you need to know what types of games you will be playing, then decide what kind of graphics card would be a minimum for you. And you also need to decide what size/weight is sufficiently portable for you, and then balance how often you will want your computer to be easily portable (e.g. taking to classes) vs. how good you want your games to look and play.

Get the XPS M1330. It comes with the 8400 GS and it's light!

yes, but the price is much higher, and the components arent anything like the one in the Compal IFT 00.... look, here is the laptop

    Core 2 Duo T7700
    160GB 7200rpm
    8400gs
    Robson, Blutooth, Fingerprint...
    14,1" WXGA 1200x800 EXTRABRITE screen
    2-5 days delivery :)

    1150€

    DELL M1330:

    Core 2 Duo T7500
    160GB 5400rpm
    8400gs
no Robson, no Blutooth, no Fingerprint
    13.3" LED screen
    33 days delivery :(

    1200€

    which one would you get?

3dMark scores are worthless against gaming, people need to seriously STOP taking them as gospel on everythings performance! The X2900XT does extremely well in 3dMark but yet gets destroyed by the 8800GTX (and sometimes even 8800GTS) in real term gaming.

Go for the 14 inch. 12 inches....is not suitable for gaming IMO

With the XPS M1330, you're also paying for the build quality, XPS support, and design. I would, without hesitation, get the XPS over any other competiting 8400 GS notebook. My girlfriend has it and it's really a technological feat. It has the graphics card you want and it has the portability you want. The XPS is 4lbs compared to the 5.5lb compal, a no brainer.

Driver improvements have been pulling the 2900 up by its straps, and it's not only getting closer, but exceeding in "real term gaming" as well. BioShock is another beast though...

yes, but the problem is that DELL.SPAIN is almost in crysis at the moment (always on Economy Nespapers :( )... its plummeting every single day.

My only concern is that the delivery date is too long (more than 1 month) and im concerned of them getting my money and closing down...

really, would you pay for a laptop that will arrive in 1 month? isnt that a bit non-commercial?

is there a big difference in terms of size and thickness between the COMPAL XFT00 (14,1") and the DELL XPSM1330 (13.3")?

Personally, I would go for the smaller laptop - but thats just me! What was the 12.1" model you were considering anyway (this is purely out of interest)?

There isn't a big difference in size between a 14.1" laptop and a 13.3" laptop - the latter will have a slightly smaller profile which will be more suitable for moving around the university. I would go for the Dell because you can get it in a lovely red finish. The month waiting time is likely due to the high demand for the M1330 recently.

Yes I know that, but you get the point I was making, the actual performance of the X2900XT now is irrelevant....when it first came out, despite poor performance it was extremely strong in 3dmark. Which goes to show, its not something you should base a cards real term gaming performance on.

thanks for your replys... however, unluckily, DELL.SPAIN is a brand that i cannot trust for their irresponsability and lack of commitment.

however, i think ill go for the 14,1" if the difference isnt that big...

BTW, is there a noticeable difference in terms of thickness and size between 15,4 and 14.1?

    thanks!

i dont know if you can get zepto's where ever you are but the 6224W is a 14.1" with a 8600gt. Which is way way faster than the 8400.

I carry the 6214W (1 year older version, difference is the graphics card) around with me at university and its perfect. I also play alot of games, which this can handle :)
