I bought an Asus G73jh-X3 recently from tigerdirect, the laptop has been working properly for the past few months without any problems. Today i was playing Darksiders on it when the laptop just shuts down by itself in the middle of the game. so i restarted my computer again and my display just completely screws up: half of my screen is covered with vertical coloured lines while the other half is the normal display except with weird colour pattern. so what should i do and what can i do with this problem?

It looks like your graphics card fried
The first sign is the laptop turning off suddenly; that was to prevent any damage to the graphics card. But I guess the damage has already been done.
You have to think about the worst possible case; you have any warranty? -
...... damn, i hoped it wouldn't come to this. I still have my 1 year warranty available but im not sure how Asus can fix this. do i have to ask for a new video card or something?
-
and any reasons to why the graphics card would fry are welcome. ive played much more graphic intensive game than darksiders before (eg Crysis, BFBC2) but nothing like this has ever happened

It's probably been slowly overheating during your previous gaming sessions and just that it happens to be Darksiders is when it decided to just... Die?
And just tell Asus about your GPU being fried and they should replace the card. -
I have no idea. The screen suddenly showing tearing and weird patterns seems to be a sign of gpu frying. I am not an expert in this department so I am not 100% sure. Perhaps you should wait for other people to answer.
But what I do know is that gpu frying can occur due to software. For instance, Starcraft 2 had an issue with many high end gpu, because at first the game's code did not have a fps limit, so when those high end graphics cards tried to render the game without the limit, they over-worked and got fried. Blizzard had to announce the fix immediately.
Or another possibility is that your gpu driver got corrupted? If you can somehow see the screen even with all those patterns, maybe update the driver?Sorry I am not being too helpful.

First things first drivers. Reinstall them. If not RMA it.

if it was a gpu failiure i don't think the computer would start up as the gpu can't display anything, it's a psod (purple screen of death)

You could check to make sure that the video cable has not become loose or something, but if you're not comfortable with dismantling the machine, it's best to send it in for repair.
By the way, it doesn't look like it's the display. I don't know why everyone is saying this is the case, when it is more likely to be the GPU; the display is still functioning, it's just not receiving a proper video signal. -
