I new to gaming on the computer but I wanted to know whats the best way to play action games such as Crysis and Call of duty. Should I purchase a game controller, if so which one is the best?

    Thanks in advance.

If you are going to play FPS on the PC, DO NOT get a controller. Get a good mouse and keyboard. A controller has the precision and control of a 3 wheeled monster truck in comparison to mouse/keyboard.

you wont last a chance in Crysis with a controller, maybe with easies difficulty yes, but otherwise, no.

I think controllers for computers really only work well with games ported from console. Just a few come to mind like assasins creed and oblivion. You mentioned call of Duty, I know COD4 actually has a button command for targeting, so that would work for single player, but any fps game you play online on the pc, your going to have a hard time competing with people using a keyboard and mouse.

I personally think Oblivion plays better on mouse/keyboard too. Only ones I think are better on controllers are badly ported console racers and badly ported console 3rd person perspective games.

    In agreement with most here.
If you're playing an FPS (First-Person Shooter) game you ABSOLUTELY want to use the keyboard/mouse.
If you're playing an RTS (Real-Time Strategy) game you WANT to use the keyboard/mouse.
If you're playing a SPORTS/RACING (imported from console) game you ABSOLUTELY want to use the gaming controller.
If you're playing a poorly-imported console game you can go either way.

The only games where I prefer a controller to a keyboard, are the PvP arcade fighting games.. Think Mortal Kombat.. :D

FPS: Can't survive without the keyboard...

Razer Lachesis for the mouse, a lot of users will probably agree with me. If you want a keyboard, too, look into the Razer Lycosa! I have both and they're both great.

Logitech MX518, G5, G7, G9; Razer brand; Microsoft Sidewinder line. You should really go to a store and feel them though. Try and find the one that feels most comfortable to you. I personally have a G9, and use a G5 at work. I prefer the G9, but I have kinda big hands, I guess. There is a gaming mouse guide around the forums somewhere. Razer mice tend to be "claw" grip while Logitech tends to be "palm" grip. I personally think palm is a hell of a lot more comfortable, but I can see how claw would give you better reflexes. I could also see how it would give you better carple tunnel too though.

I play all my FPS's on my G1S's touchpad, I'd suggest using an external mouse though.

I ordered (eBay) a green Razer Copperhead a while ago for $30, so my "touchpad gaming days" might end once I receive it.

Grab a bag of popcorn, crank of the settings, dim the lights and watch the slide show.

J/K with my old setup it would be like that, the new one plays it very well at 1920x1080 All High, but I have some artifact issues so I dont play it yet, playing UT3 & COD4 & DMC4 instead.

You dont play Crysis it plays you.

just my 2 cents but, i cant stand playing fps games with a mouse and keyboard. i use the microsoft wireless controller. ive found it to be much more user freindly. as in the keys are all right under your fingers and you dont have to worry about hitting the correct keys. its like playing a game on a console but you get the graphics of the pc ....my 2 cents you cant beat a controller....microsoft wireless

for most FPS games, like counter-strike, you're not going to last. sure you could kill people, but chances are even beginners would kill you first. controllers are much slower in terms of reaction than a mouse. pop in halo 3 and spin around as fast as you can at the highest sensitivity. then play cs and turn the mouse up as high as it goes, and move the mouse left and right. you'll spin much faster on a mouse, thus, you can react much quicker with little jolts. also, the mouse has much more range of motion than the controller. that kind of stuff really helps when trying to aim. now button placement wise, controllers tend to be easier because they fit your hand better for reaching buttons.

i like controllers for racing games and button smashing action-rpg styled games, or when i play SNES games on the PC. but for FPS on the PC, you really want a mouse and keyboard.

I also enjoy see+say and color by numbers. With a little bit more complexity comes much more control and flexibility. There's only so much you can do with 12 buttons, a thumbpad, and 2 thumbsticks. By the way, congrats on figuring out how to make your text larger.

Yes, as stated above a mouse and keyboard is far superior rather than a controller since, with a controller you wont have the same type of fast precision. If you compare a controller and a mouse and keyboard for GRAW2, than yes you have an easier time accesing the four color coded buttons on the controller to throw a granade and change a weapon, but the fact is that you will learn the shortcut commands incredibly quick in the game and your skill will increase dramatically within the first two weeks of gaming.

So comparing these two can be described as putting a bull in a china shop, the controller is fast and big, but fine precision is not one of its greater talents.

    P.S

I would like to refrain you from making such a comment about a person/object whom is just touching the top of the iceberg of our wonderful world of computer games. And you should be grateful that he is actually asking for advice in a good forum instead of asking someone with less experience within the field. Such as a blind man leading the deaf over a minefield.

M&K is always a excellent partner of fps game..it helps you shoot the enemies in no time, which can not be done by game pad..
however MS and SONY are not willing to let us to play FPS by M&K on console, because they want to earn more money by selling more controllers..
