    Hello,

There is a nice promotion in France for the 8710w HP workstation.
It is configured this way :
    T7700
    2 GB RAM
    Quadro FX1600M 512MB
    120 GO 7200TR/MIN
    1920x1200 Screen

It is less expensive than the x200 from Toshiba for example.
But I won't use Maya, cinema4d, etc, so I just wonder if my quadro will be good (drivers ok ? How compared to a 8700M GT? etc.) with games (particularly recent games).

Thanks a lot for your help.

It will be nearly the same with its 8xxx counterparts. It's just the Workstation-oriented version.

I've heard that the Quadro cards aren't geared to gaming as much as things like AutoCAD...

The same as the 8700M GT, these cards usually play games quite well even with the professional drivers as long as they are relatively new, plus you can always install regular gaming drivers on that card to match the 8700's gaming performance.

Oh, and the HP 8710w is arguably the best built 17" notebooks, lightyears better than the Toshiba X200...

The Quadro is mainly geared for graphical production, like Cad, MAYA, 3Ds Max, etc.
I have a Quadro FX2500M in my Voodoo ENVY U709, and it is plenty powerful to play everything. My 3D Marks are similar to the 7950GTX's, when I disable the FSAA.
The FX1600 is a DX10 card and is underpowered compared to my FX2500M, but it will definitely be able to play any game that you throw at it.

I love having a Quadro, it gives my laptop the 4-wheel drive advantage.

If you dont get it, Quattro, is 4-wheel drive.

The Quadro is great, it cranks.
I have had only one problem with my card.
One of the surface mount transistors blew becuase my graphics card was defective. Voodoo should be getting me my new card by this Wednesday.

I cant wait to get my U709 back up and running.

The Quadro's are great, the only problem is that they tend to be more expensive for replacement, so you may want to get a GeForce card becuase it would be cheaper. My card cost $1360.00 alone. Luckily my Voodoo was only 3 months old, so I got a new card for free. After three years, if my Quadro dies, I would be screwed.

    Good Luck

The 8710w is warranted 3 years so even if I have a problem it will be ok for 3 years (it is the professional warranty).

This model don't come with the blue ray drive (it would be 500$ more).
The promotional price is 1899€. (2700$ instead of 3000$ on hp site). This promotion is reserved to students.
The toshiba x200-20G (without HD DVD) is a bit pricer.
