I haven't received the laptop yet but was just wandering how it compares to my current desktop in terms of overall performance as well as gaming (gaming at the same resolution obviously - 1280x1024).
Sony vaio (customised laptop):
- 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo T9550 (with speedstep tech) CPU, 1066MHz front side bus, 6MB L2 cache
- Ati mobility HD 3650 512mb GDDR3, total available graphics memory of aprx. 2280MB
- 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 SDRAM, 800MHz
- 320GB 5400RPM HDD
- 16.4" 1920x1080 full HD display
- Windows vista 64-bit
Dell Dimension 5150
- Intel Pentium D 940, 3200MHz CPU
- Ati X1950 Pro 512mb
- 3GB DDR2 SDRAM 533
- 160GB 7200RPM HDD
- 1280x1024 17" LCD
- Windows XP home SP3
Thanks for any help people.

The laptop is much better.

Depends what games, your laptop has a stronger CPU but your desktop has a stronger GPU.
However your laptops GPU is newer.
Id say in overall, your laptop will perform better in games. -
your new laptop should be more powerful
Core 2 Duo CPU will make you notice improvement over single core CPU in your desktop
About GPU well X1950 Pro has "only" shader model 3.0 support, while HD 3650 is at least DX 10, if not DX 10.1 ready, still the X1950 Pro's were elite cards back in they're days so it might happen that X1950 might still be more effective than HD 3650
Additional 1 GB ram wont be noticable I think, but it's always good to have on 64 bit system
Anyway you will be able to play every game out today on high settings with possible exception of Crysis - i run it with 9650m witch rivals the power of HD 3650 -/+ and get decent fps with all high except shaders -
uh im pretty sure your 9650m will be quite a bit stronger than a 3650, i know my 8600m gt ddr3 is.
-
To put it in short, your laptop basically pwns you desktop
-
-
your desktop has a slightly stronger gpu, much weaker cpu and no dx10 support(which doesn't matter since hd3650 is not strong enough for real dx10 games anyway).
in terms of gaming though, desktop will be a bit better, not by much, say 0-10%. -
ok so the overall opinion is that my laptop is much better (especially consideribg my pc is a few years old now and isnt as fast as it used to be)? well except for that last post, surely if my laptop has a much better cpu and a gpu thats almost the same then why would the desktop be 0-10% better at gaming, unless u meant the laptop?
-
oh and LisuPoland, what kind of fps are you getting with ur settings on crysis? lile what do you consider decent?
-
-
edit: i would still suggest you use your laptop for gaming, your sure to get better performance in some cpu intensive games. and pentium d is kinda slow even for normal use now days. -

The X1950 Pro scores 4600 in 3dMark06 with an FX-60.
The HD 3650 scores 3800 in 3dMark06 with a P8600.
An FX-60 completes a wPrime32 run in about 60 seconds. A P8600 completes a wPrime32 run in about 32 seconds. So even in 3dMark06, with a much less powerful CPU, the X1950 Pro scores much higher. -
pentium D 940 is dual core.
gaming wise you will get more FPS with your desktop -
Your desktop is a bit more powerful still, mainly because it is a stronger DX9 contender than the HD3650.
However, they are near in performance about 10-15% difference, so it is not much of a loss to carry near your desktop power in a laptop -
yea desktop wins, just barely, in the GFX department, but thats the only spot where it does.
-
One thing to consider is to run your games on your laptop at 1280x800 and turn up the AA. You're sure to have a good experience with that resolution in general.

I'd say that desktop is about 10 percent faster, it's an X1950, which was a beast back in the day. Any DX9 game is going to run better on it than the 3650 plus it should be capable of higher resolutions. Being a unified shader GPU gives the 3650 a much higher level of efficiency though hence why it should come close to it in most situations.

hd3650 uses 128bit and x1950 uses 256. Even though it is older, it will still outperform the 3650 in fps in any game.
But I would say that the viao will outperform ur dell in everyday uses like multi tasking and what not.
How does my new laptop compare to my desktop???
