I'm been doing searching all over the market for the perfect laptop for me, and I need to know:

I'm trying to get a 14.1" laptop, 15.4" tops, for college.

If I am going to be doing some gaming on this computer, (Warcraft III, Everquest II, Battlefield 2, etc), would the GeForce Go 6150 be able to handle it?

Warcraft III should run just fine.

Everquest II and BF2 can run... But many would find it unplayable. Well, if 15-20 fps is acceptable to you, more power to ya.

I'm guessing you've been looking at a Compaq v3000z? It's a nice laptop but I think you would be more happier with other laptops.

Several good 14.1" or 15.4" laptops that can play games nicely and don't weigh so much are the....

    Acer Aspire 5672 - 15.4" - 6.6lb - 128mb x1600 - $1069 from newegg.com
    Asus s96j - 15.4" - 6.3lb - 256mb x1600 ~$1300 from various online vendors
    HP nc8430 - 15.4" - 6.2lb - 256mb x1600 ~$1500 from pricegrabber.com

    Asus A8jm - 14.1" - 5.3lb - 512mb Go 7600 - $1500 from newegg.com
    Asus W7J - 13.3" - 4.5lb - 128mb Go 7400 - $1500 from newegg.com
    Asus W3J - 14.1" - 5.3lb - 256mb x1600 - $1700 from various online vendors

The 6150 will be capable of running BF2 with more then 15-20 fps if you adjust the settings accordingly. Don't get me wrong, you'll still have to crank down the settings, but it will be playable.

It wouldn't hurt to get a slightly better model though - I have a fairly basic (and cheap) lappy with a Geforce 7400 - can run most games on medium-ish settings, which is all I really want from a laptop!

But as I said, if you don't mind playing on low settings in those games, the 6150 will run all of them.

Well if the 6150 is as weak as you are all saying, then it musnt be as powerful as the X200 as people have been saying. As the X200 CAN run Far Cry at medium to high settings at 30fps+(very smooth) and FEAR at medium settings at 30fps+ (smooth even during crazy firefights)
And if you dont believe me, check out my video that shows my X200 playing FEAR at medium settings perfectly.

And HAVOK.. Your 7400 sounds alot weaker than it should be.. as iv read some of your previous posts where u said that u cant play FEAR at medium settings without getting alot of slowdown.. youd wanna check that out as iv seen FEAR play at 800x600 on med-high settings beautifully (40fps+) on another laptop with a 7400

Yeah you should man.. Coz the 7400 is pretty darn powerful. Obviously not anything like X1600/7600+.. but its well able for new games today at Med-High settings. There was a lad on You Tube that showed a video of his 7400 playing FEAR at max settings and auto detect settings (which med settings all round). The max settings video looked choppy but the second video was perfectly smooth!!

To add to this, you can get a Compal HGL-30 (14.1") or HEL-80 (15.4") from http://www.powernotebooks.com in a range of prices and configurations, so you can tune the specs to be more exactly what you want.

Thanks admlam for the suggestions. For some reason I'm just very partial to the thinkpads. The service and warranty are excellent. I guess this post has become a "should I buy" post, but is the service for acer and asus particularly good? There are just so many choices out there it gets a tad overwhelming.

I'm currently interested in the Z61m with a ATI Mobility Radeon X1400.... it's hyper memory though. I suppose thats not really quite worth it either, is it?

I need to make a decision soon, before college starts. >

Why does it seem all the companies with reliable service have crappy video cards?

    HP5000 line looks ok too...

ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 or GeForce Go 7400?

How much dedicated memory does the x1400 your looking at have? It probably supports 256mb (128 dedicated/128 shared). And if the 7400 has the same memory configeration, id go for the X1400 as its slightly more powerful than the 7400 (about 10-15%) which will make a difference in newer games currently available and to be released..

hmm well the x1400 is 128 mb hyper memory. So that means 64mb is dedicated, correct?

So I guess the nvidia would be the better choice? Or is the difference minimal?

Are you sure the X1400 your talking about is 128 Hypermem? Coz iv only ever seen ones that were 256mb..which had 128mb dedicated. It could be a mistake on the spec of the one you are looking at.. Otherwise i would imagine that an X1400 labelled as having 128mb Hypermemory has only 64 dedicated. In that case a 7400 with 256mb turbocache (128 dedicated) will indeed be a better performer!

Hmm.. I really didnt think X1400 128mb Hypermemory versions existed.. I thought they all had at least 128mb dedicated. That could be pretty weak on gaming..

Why are you going for a think pad anyway? If your looking for something that sturdy and reliable, go for a Toshiba!. I work in a laptop shop and we sell EVERY type of laptop and the ONE make of laptop that we never get problems with are Toshiba's! They are incredably reliable! HP's are BY FAR the worst! Try the Satellite Pro A100 with the X1400 256mb hypermem and the T2400. It has a great screen, amazing speakers and wont let you down

Hmm... I really like HP's and Compaqs. I know, I know... "what a noob"... and I am to notebooks... but I know my stuff on Desktops. I would never buy anything proprietary for gaming, but I like HP's and Compaqs for notebooks.

Hp's look good and they are the best value for money. They are real multimedia laptops and you will always get a good spec for a great price. They really are the easiest laptops to sell BUT you wouldnt believe the amount of them we get back with problems. We got new stock in of the Dv2000's and out of the first 6 we sold, we got 3 back with problems so serious that the customers had to be given a replacement!

I know someone who bought a notebook with the GF 6150.

It was horrible. I tried to play FEAR on it, but it lagged even on low settings.

I have a desktop with an Xpress 200M or basically an X300 128MB.
It isn't great, but then it isn't too bad. It can run counter-strike source great, but don't try to use HDR. FEAR ran somewhat horrible, but better than the 6150.

Since you can get a notebook with an Xpress 200M for under $300 here in california. It's not a bad deal.

The 6150 is better. Although it's possible the MX400 might be faster in some DX7 games, but that's hardly an issue I'm sure.

Well the 6150 is supposed to be a bit better than the x200m but my x200m really can't play BF2 at all, it lags even on lowest at 1024*768 andI get 10-15fps when it's not lagging out.

I'd say go for at least a geforce go 7300 if you want to play BF2 preferably better. Yous should have more luck with the other games.

Just to counter Balance this, I had a Sempron 2800+, 1Gb of DDR 266 Ram and an X200m, I could run BF2 at about 28-40fps, on low settings....it looked terrible, I wouldn't bother to be honest with it, but it worked fine.

So, assuming that you are going with a machine say...like the tx1000z 12.1" tablet and using it for VERY light gaming or older games...like say eve online. the Go 6150 should be fine.

I got an average of 10-15 frames in 800x600 minimum settings in World of Warcraft under Windows Vista on a tx1000z.

With XP, the performance should increase drastically.

I get 90+ fps for condition zero & thats the game i play...other than that 6100/6150 runs CS:source also ..., it runs NFS prostreet on minimal settings (playable) ...i mean its fun seeing that such a budget card can actually run some games ...

NFS MW & Carbon are easily playable at 1024X760 ...

Although the water is FarCry gives it trouble & it starts showing major cracks.
