Apparantly I've been 'given' an unopened copy of World of Warcraft by a friend (Well it looks unopened). Guess they didn't want to play it...

If they did open it and play it though, how would the key be transfered to me?

And should I even begin to play this disease and leave my normal life behind? :D :p

Reading from my list of Subtle But Clever Ways of Destroying My Enemies' Lives:

    3) Give them an unopened copy of World of Warcraft and tell them I didn't want to play it for < insert plausible reason >.

Ugh sorry don't know much about the WoW sign up process, but the logical assumption is they take your CC number and after the initial trial period, they start charging you a monthly fee. So if your friend opened it, played it, and didn't like it, the product key would still be OK since he would have canceled his account. They won't cancel the key since, well, they want to leave open the possibility of him coming back. What won't work is if he didn't cancel his account and you try to sign up with the same key.

I guess try making an account with the key and see if it's accepted.

you'll be fine, iv installed wow on different computers before, they dont care if u install it because you need a account to play it anyway, so i dont think the key is a big deal

To transfer the key, you have to give the physical cds to someone else and then cancel your account (you being the original owner).

something like that... it's in the TOS for the game. I can copy/paste it tonight if you want, but it's long and boring.

As long as you're the one in possession of the original cds and he cancelled his account, then it should be fair game.

The thing is, 1 key = 1 account, and its registered online together on that account, so you can install WoW on any computer without hassles.

Once a key has been used on an account, it will be tied together forever. You can't simply just 'make' an account, you need a key. So you will either need to, register for a free trial account, or use your friends account.

Can a mod answer this one:

I have a few 10 day trial keys laying around and I got a few more in my box of burning Crusade. Can I start a thread to give away those 10 days trial cd keys?

I'm not sure we would be allowed since we do get something in return if the user keeps playing... so it's like a gift in order to get something back. But it's not like we'd be selling anything or stealing... service for a service.

    yes/no?

Well, that's a referral system, and it's often not looked up towards.

If anything, if someone asks for one, feel free to PM them but I don't think having such a thread is a good idea.

    ok. I understand, thanks!

back on the subject of transfering acounts, I wonder how people manage to sell the accounts on ebay. Is that even legal?

It's definitely illegal, but it still happens...

There is a way, I know how to but the process costs quite a bit of cash and alot of tinkering around.

I think it would probably be relatively easy, you can buy a level 60 character from a website or you can just talk with someone about buying it, quickly make the auction on ebay and finish it right away so there is nothing they can do about it.

Mmm, I was thinking selling and transferring a character from one account to another, but yea if its the whole account, its possible.

But you can just get the trial off the WoW website and try WoW for ten days.
