I just ordered a new laptop and i was woundering how it was going to compare to my old desktop. Someone offered to buy the desktop for 375. should keep the desktop around for games? or will the laptop be able to handle everything the desktop does?

    T7200
    1 gig ram (533)
    X1400 graphics card
    120 gig harddrive (5400)

If you use the desktop for gaming, then it should do fine. Althought the graphics card isn't the best, it is enough for some resonable gaming. If you want to play some of the newer games like Battefield 2/2142, then you may want to consider a RAM upgrade to 2 GB. The notebook is well ahead of the desktop, in terms of processing power, too. The T7200 will outperform the Athlon XP 2800.

You laptop will be better for games, although it has less RAM memory(which you can always upgrade).Much stronger processor and graphic card are important things in gaming.

It will certainly play newer games better, because it is more optimised for those. The 9800 Pro was a very good graphics card when it was released, however, it won't be able to play some of latest games, because it lacks optisations and power.

First things first - the Radeon 9800PRO 256MB will easily beat the X1400 in almost any situation. No doubt about that. It has much more processing power and a 256-bit memory bus. On the other hand though, it is outdated. Moving to an X1400 should not be that different, so I'd ditch the desktop.

Agreed. Technically speaking, the 9800 has more raw power than the x1400, but it's an older card that doesn't support DX9 or SM3, which is going to hinder it in places. But the x1400 is a decent card that will be able to play many games well. I'd sell the desktop and use it to get more RAM for the laptop. Of course, another option would be to get another laptop with an x1600 or x1700, such as the Asus A8Jm. That will be much more powerful than the x1400 (though maybe still not as powerful as the 9800Pro) and support many newer features. You could get an Asus S96J for a pretty good price, and if you sell your desktop for $375 you should easily be able to afford it.

Actually, the 9800 has full support for DX9 up to Shader Model 2.0, but it doesn't support SM3, you're right about that.

I agree with this plan. Use the extra revenue from the desktop sale to fund the next stage up in graphics cards. The X1400 is an OKAY card, but I really can't recommend it for gamers. Especially with Vista. Games like Supreme Commander and Armed Assault already murder this card.
