The new Dell Vostro with 1.6ghz duo core, 2 gigs ram, nvidia 8400gs. I know this is a HUGE step down from the one in my sig but it is 500+ dollars cheaper.

What do you want to do? Clear 2Ghz Better than 1.6Ghz, 8600GT much better than 8400gs what are you going to do? I think $500 is a lot to spend for those upgrades but if you need then you need. If you don't need the boost saving the money could be good. Hard Question!

8400M GS can play current games at mid to optimized high settings.... and newer/upcoming games at low-mid settings.

I would recommend to get a 8600M GT, the bottleneck in gaming is not the CPU (so screw that, any dual core should do fine)... just get the best GPU that you can.

the main point being not far

8400 is a little weaker then the last gen x1600 or 7600

I agree but what about the jump down from 8600 to 8400 and gt to gs and a lower CPU which as stated is not critical even does not matter as long as current. I agree, question $500 is what is hard to answer, what are you going to do?

I was planning to step down too, but it just seems better to get a better laptop. I would plan to use it for 4 years or so, and also it can never be upgraded. Might as well spend the extra bucks. If you decide to get a better one later on, you just waste more money doing that.

It's like a fusion between Inspiron and Lattitude.

Hmm, what I'm wondering is why they put medium/high end graphics cards into a business notebook....

And does anyone know who the ODM is? Compal?

    1) dell knows that lots of gamers will want the vostro's sealed keyboard since gamers on mountain dew binges during lan parties will likely spill something

    2) maybe some engineers need it for CAD

Same for US! (us and US a.k.a. USA) I made a thread for it in Dell forums.
