Ok, I'm buying a laptop soon and I want it to be able to play good games.
So here is what I have in mind, give me your opinions.
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 2.0GHz, 4MB cache
    Chipset: Intel 945PM + ICH7M
    RAM: 2GB DDRII 667 SDRAM (2x1GB)
    Video chip: ATi Radeon X1600 256MB (512MB) DDRII 128bit
Well, I think that is quite good, and my wallet thinks the same.
Will it be able to run games like Oblivion and Carbon good?
Also, that laptop is pretty much a Asus Z96j ripoff, it's an AcmeBook Force AB09-Z96J.

The ATI Radeon Mobility X1600 won't allow you to play at maximum settings, but it should be able to play current games with most settings at mid to high. However, as with most graphics cards, it will be pushed to its limit as newer games are released. For a more futureproof card, I recommend finding a system with NVIDIA GeForce Go 7700 (however, the improvements over a X1600 are only slight) or a NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS (which should be able handle most games until DX10 gaming becomes the norm). I hope this helps a bit.

I have a go7600 which is basically the nvidia rival to the X1600 and it runs Carbon fine but u have to lower the resolution to get it to run well on max settings. havent tried oblivion but ppl round here say it runs fine too with medium to high settings.

I have the same card as you but half the RAM and a single core CPU.
I do a lot of gaming and it runs my games just fine.
You should get better performance than me too.
Although I haven't played either of those games, I play a lot of Doom 3, Quake 4, Halo PC, BF2142, that sort of thing, and I get good frame rates at good settings.
I'd say it'll be fine unless you want max settings or more future-proofing, then you should consider a more powerful card like Sylenxor said.

Well with that set up you will be able to play BF2142 on Max, because i have mine set to mid/high the only problem is at that point i begins to use near all my am (1024mb), so realy with 2048mb ram you will be able to get more out than me so Full settings on BF2142, and most current games, i think. But obviously as others have said future games will push cards, but i think you will still be ale to play on Mid and such. But for furter future proofing your going to be paying for a 17" notebook which aren't cheap realy.

But i can say the the ATi x1600 isn't a push over of a card as i own one so i would pretty safely know, even with 1024mb RAM

actually carbon will run very good. i have asus w3j with 1 gb ram 1.8 C2D and radeon x1600 with omega drivers. i play carbon with max. settings and have no problems. i can even return to windows while playing then hibernate and continue in the morning :) i also tried quake 4 and it ran ok with average settings but took a long time to load (like 2-3 min.)

I play Carbon at high settings with road reflections and some other minor details off. I used to play Oblivion at medium settings with no grass and short obj/landscape/NPC distances. With a moderate OC you can bump the settings to high on Oblivion while maintaining playable frames.

You might think about cutting your ram and getting a better video card for the same money.
Ram is cheap and easily upgraded at a later date. And buying a gig of ram somewhere else will almost always be cheaper than buying it with the laptop.
