I tried the demo on my new Inspiron 1520 (256mb gpu, 2ghz cpu, 2gb ram) on max settings @ 1680x1050 with everything but forced lighting on...

    my laptop blew up

Recommended settings? I can't run Fraps in games, any other way to tell FPS?

try 3DMark06 for a general idea.

I found 1024 x whatever to work the best. I did not try it overclocked however.

Try using half that resolution, and the game should run fine. If not, make all effects 75%, not 100%.

In the demo i was runing 1280 x 800, All Maxed Out including DX10 textures except for global lighting. I was averaging around 20fps which seemed good enough for the slow movement.

Might I ask how you got Bioshock to run in 1280x 800 res? The closest I could get to that res. was 1280x768.
