Hi guys, Im looking into buying a laptop and I came across the Dell XPS m1330. I'm just curious how this setup would be for playing games such as BF 2142/2 and CS:S. I'm not looking for top notch graphics, even medium/low would be okay as long as the frame rate holds up. Here's my setup:
Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor T7100 (2MB cache/1.8GHz/800Mhz FSB)
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
128MB NVIDIA® GeForce Go 8400M GS
-Thanks!-

for current games fine.....for games coming out in the next couple of years....not good.....get something with a 8600....such as the acer 5920
-
one word horrible
needs improvement in:
graphics -
I'm sure that BF 2/2142 will run fine on the 8400M GS as well, if not at the highest settings.
Edit: Here are some benchmarks a reviewer took on the 7400M: on high settings w/o AA or AF, he benched 53.83 in the CS:S stress test, and 41.13 in the Lost Coast stress test. I've heard the 8400GS is about 50% faster than the 7400, so in CS:S you'll should easily get high frame rates at high quality settings.

It really depends on what you need the laptop for. If all you want is to play the causal round of CS:S once in a while, the m1330 is great. But if you want to do some serious gaming, you might want to look elsewhere.

Yah, gaming isn't anywhere close to my primary focus. It just would be nice to have a sleek looking laptop that can push out some decent gaming as well.
-
BF2 settings low to mid are fine too, bf2142 im not sure if i can play it or not though -
you're fine, that's a nice setup for what you want. Don't listen to people who don't know what they 're talking about. I'm sure you'll enjoy the look of the xps.

I never understood why people get the m1330, when the inspiron 1520 is superior, 15.4" 8600gt, and better specs for cheaper. I dont even think the m1330 looks that good anyway, the only thing it has is good weight.
The 8400gs can easily play CS:S, and medium on bf2 most likely. -
the 1520 is the better option in most cases because of the bang for buck, but the m1330 is one of the sexiest looking laptops out right now. You need to look at better pics of if you think it's nothing special. The 8600gt is a good card, but my guess is that in a year it will struggle with some of the more demanding games. I got a 8600gs because I know that it will handle todays games with no problems like f.e.a.r, or cs:s. I also believe that 4 years from I will still think source is more fun than half the games out. That shouldn't surprise anyone too because look how popular 1.6 is still. If I want to play the new games on high settings, i'll save up and build a $1000 desktop.

Ive seen many pictures of the m1330 and the price tag does not justify! I dont like how the screen has those black bars top-bottom and i hate how the screen folder looks.
-
i would recommend something with at least an 8400 gt. the difference between the gs and the gt is significant. if possible go with an 8600 gt.
-
I WOULD get the 1520 but i've heard that its really heavy for its size, and weight is an issue for me becuase I am going to be travelling with the notebook alot. Is it true that the 1520 is that big and heavy?

yes, 7 pounds heavy.

Okay, so basically what I'm understanding is that the m1330 should be able to lug out some decent performance from the games I listed on med settings?
-
This is so annoying!! Why does no one ever list there resolution when asking about their specs' gaming capabilities!! It's so vital! I guess I may be slightly overreacting, but I really tend to deal with resolution related stuff. (I wrote the guide in the index sticky). Anyways, I don't think there's any way of getting the message out to everyone, but to at least those who read this post: Always include your resolution in your specs when asking others for an evaluation of the gaming capabilities of your notebook!!
-
You know, what I may just copy that post to every thread in this forum lol. Should I?
-
Now i'm very confused, I know that the features of the 1520 are awesome and I would love to have those specs but also I know that I am going to be travelling alot, which kinda forces me away from the 1520. Im also still confused about the m1330's gaming performance, I'm getting seriously varied answers; all I want to know is if it can play BF2 on at least low-med settings.
-Thanks!- -
