Can it last 2 years from now?

I gonna get me a laptop soon for my overseas assignment of 2+ years in China, and since I'm just too lazy to ship a desktop there, a laptop will do.

To cure me of insanity due to boredom and stressful workloads, I need a gaming one.

I have doubts about the X1600 lasting me there for two years, heck 1 year seems a stretch already. Bearing in mind I'm gonna be playing on a (i hope) 17" with a UWXGA screen, the X1600 is already struggling on current games like F.E.A.R and AoEIII I think.

    Sigh.. any thoughts on this?

I have no data to back me up on the above statement, so feel free to flame me and knock some sense in to me :D

You can always wait a month or so and buy a x1800 or get a 7800GTX

The X1600 is the next-gen of ATI cards, you can't get a more advanced mid-range card now. So, it's the best you can get. It will last 2 years.

the x1600 is the ATI Mobility flagship card right now, and should last about 2+ years.

    I beg to differ.

I think it matters what you mean by last...and what quality and resolution you are driving. I bet for most strategy, RPGs it will last a while. FPS at 1600x1400 at highest settings might be taxing. The card is only midrange for the series and from what I already understand is dominated by the x800.

For running FEAR and other hi-end games at max settings on a 17" notebook, the Nvidia 7800GTX Go and ATI X1800 are the only cards that will do the job. If you're looking for a 17" notebook to get you through the next two years, check out the Sager 5720. Wait until April, if you can, and get a 5720 with the new Dual Core processor. My 5720 has a Pentium 780 + 7800GTX Go and it flat-out rocks through any game I've played. A Dual Core 5720 will be even faster.

The new core duo 5720's, will they just feature the x1800, or will the go7800GTX still be an option on it along with the x1800?

The X1600 was never 'designed' to run at those settings to begin with. I am certain it can do so in many games, but ATI has higher end cards for UXGA resolutions, etc.

The X1600 is designed for an XGA/SXGA resolution, that's the target range of resolutions that people will be using on these cards.

I fully agree that 2 years is a reasonable timeframe.
