Macintosh G4 Powerbook... bought 5 and a half years ago. Still works.
Problems: needs to be plugged in to turn on, freezes during booting (50/50), wi-fi became extremely weak, hard drive sounds like a helicopter, some pixels on the screen are stuck, three keys missing on keyboard, dents all across the aluminium chassis, one usb port died.

well 4 years ago, almost 5. It was my emachines M68something:
AMD Athlon 64 2.0ghz
1GB of RAM
Ati Nvidia 9600 64MB
That one lasted quite a bit... it is actually still powerful enough to run some games of today
Next one was three years ago an Acer Aspire which wasnt much of an upgrade:
Turion 1.6ghz
2GB of RAM
Ati Radeon X700 64MB (Crippled edition 64 bit bus)
then My Asus M50 which was great and lasted me 7 months before I changed to something better:
Core 2 Duo 2.1ghz
Nvidia GeForce 9500M GS
3GB of RAM
my current set! Asus G50vt-X1, I love to play anything I want with amazing fps at native res.
From experience, buying higher end graphics notebooks helps them run for many years. I don't expect to change my laptop anytime soon -
My previous one (an Acer 9302) lasted a year until I decided to get a new one, it's still functional, but the monitor hinges broke so I have to hold the monitor on with a pair of G clamps where each hinge is...
...could be because I dropped it a couple of times...
I'm hoping my current rig (Asus M70VM) lasts 2 or more years... -
Coming up on eight months now with no major repair work needed (aside from that whole kerfuffle with the "subwoofer")
-
-
my Gateway 6860FX died in 6 months, i guess that's what you get from Gateway or Acer. and they still can't fix it after like a month. *shrug
-
It'll go obsolete way before it crashes.

Had a acer 5920G for a year was going strong.
Then i got stolen so time for a new one. -
Notebook in my sig still going very strong after almost 2 years. I haven't had a single issue with it at all (even with my very aggressive overclock).
I can still run games at the highest or near the highest settings on my 19" external monitor (1440x900). Scores ~5500 in 3dmark 06 (at 1280x1024). -
My current Gateway P-6831FX has had no problems (I couldn't fix myself) since January.
And my previous Dell Inspiron 5100 had to go in for a motherboard replacement and swap the hard drive (both under warranty) Now my mom uses it. Bought it March 2004 -
My first laptop lasted me 2.5 years.
I just recently replaced it with a Clevo M860TU which I am planning to keep for at least 4. -
Mine is two years old and now refurbished. Got new CPU, new GPU and new HDD.
Cost me half the price of a new one but hopefully it will last another two years. And no problems with it so far. Though most of the time it's used as mobile home PC plugged in.
-
had me sager for about 2 months now...running strong as the first day i got it, if not better due to newer drivers and stuff.
my old quanta kn1-pm with Pentium M 1.73ghz/2gb ram/nvidia go6600 128mb. is still running cool (68C max cpu | 64C max GPU) and strong after 3 years of harsh use (its my brother's now) -
As far as reliability to keep on ticking, it should last many years. As far as usability for newer games, for most, no more than 2, higher end ones more like 3.
Just give it basic TLC and it'll last fine. Don't do anything stupid with it and it'll run fine even if run 24/7. I have a desktop PC that runs pretty much 24/7 since it acts as a home server, occasional backup gaming machine, and everything else. It has lasted over three years and going strong. I think the only thing I did was add a new hard drive and video card. (Athlon64 3500+ 939 pin, 2GB RAM, 250GB + 500GB HDD's, NEC DVDRW, 8600 GT PCIe) -
Got mine (specs below) January 10th of 2008 so almost 1 year... Its still awesome..
I usually get a new system every 3 years... -
My Acer 5920g vid card fried after a year maybe a month more.
But my HP ze5630us is still running strong p4 2.4ghz 1gb ram and some ati 64mb card im using it right now and to play wc3.
Hopefully my new will last longer than a year but im changes the card on the acer to ati 3650 ddr3 since its alot better. -
it has been in the repair shop close to two months now.. -
-
Not really a gaming laptop, but I had a Sony Vaio for EIGHT years!!! It worked great when going on trips for web access (needed PCMCIA wireless and LAN - lol) and to play much older games (Starcraft, Civ 2, Battlezone, etc).
Battery lasted about five, and then it would give you about 30-40 minutes run time... lol. Went a year or so with just a plug, then bought a battery.
I even sold it on eBay for $200! -
I will make my annual "3 years after with my D900K" thread in March.... and show you what happens when you take care of a high-end notebook.
Still owns most of the ones out there. -
-
Descent 2! Wow... I LOVE(ED) that game. Best ... Game ... EVER!!! (In my oh, so humble opinion).
-
I have the same amilo pi1536 and my videocard had broken, now i want to change it to 8600gt.
I've found your post, please tell me your upgrade storyIt's very important for me, I have some questions...
Please contact me on email khoroshaev at gmail dot com!! -
2 years and still working. Had to buy a laptopcooler so the rainbow sparks and the chronical shutting down of the graph card to cool down problems would end.

I have a bad habit of destroying a computer well before it's time lol. I won't explain what happened to my Asus, with it's now broken screen. It still works, though I don't have the screen and screen frame attached now, of course it's only usable with a monitor of some sort, and at some point I want to attach it to an LCD monitor and create an all-in-one computer with it. Until then, it just sits here, while my desktop gets all the usage. I'm not in real need of mobility at the moment, so it's all good.

I never keep mine long enough to tell! But my Vostro 1500 is still going strong after 2.5 years and it has an 8600m GT. A friend of mine is using it for the next few months while he's away for work. Mainly so we can play some BF2 together.

Hi guys merry xmass,to all you laptop nuts out there{me inclueded}.I still have my dell m1710 and it still going strong after 3.5 years, only the gpu has been replaced. The go7900 gtx has served me well, still plays most games quite well. The wife uses it so face book is the most stressfull thing it has to do in its retirement lol .Pity it cant take the 8800 as i still like the whole style of the chassis,i would of upgraded and not bought my m571ru-u.Which by the way is also a very good laptop and also about 2 years old almost.
-
it still works. doesn't run crysis @1920x1200 but it runs tetris without lag.
4.77MHz CPU 512kB ram. weights 8kg.
I've it since 1984. -
My POS Asus M51SN lasted 1 year. Poorly built and crappy parts. I will never purchase an ASUS laptop again.
"Solidly Built" should be taken down from the ASUS forum. -
-
Over 2 years for mine, still in love with it.
Although I am waiting to do a reformat when I get another External HD, but it's still quick as snot right now (and will be like greased lightning when I'm done reformatting and adding 2 more GB's RAM). -
My Asus Z96J, with a x1600 still can run the latest games. Sure, not with the best quality, but descent enough. After 3.5 years of very heavy use (I work on it the whole day and then I use it for gaming about ~3 hours per day) it still works just as the day I bought it.
-
Zepto 6625WD lasted 2 years and 2 weeks...

On another note, does anyone else leave their battery in despite never actually using it? -
Asus low and high end models are the 2 extremes.
My C90S still working perfectly, only paint wear on the palm rest. After 2 years and half. -
The closest I have had to a gaming laptop was my acer 5672. Although many laughed and pointed rudely at it being an acer, when I bought it it was top technology. Core duo CPU x1600 GPU played tons of games very well and is still going strong almost 4 years later. I dont have it anymore but my brother still uses it.
Even though my dell had an 8600mGT it was a business class laptop and neither of my signature PCs game much more then old games, orange box, and WoW. -
The Toshiba lasted 2 years and would have lasted longer if it had not met with an unfortunate accident. (Alcohol poisoning.. although I think the Coke in the drink did more damage)
My ASUS is 13 months+ old and has no sign of issues. -
1.5 year. Will probably be good for another few years but im tired of it. So im selling it and replacing it with a new one
-
Day 1: Rubber grommets from web cam fell off
6 Month: 320 Gb HD failed, keyboard started to feel loose with certain keys (no heavy use)
7 month: both Hinge covers fell off
Other problems:
-Lack of 64 bit drivers
-GPU tends to overheat
-Keyboard and other plastics feel cheap or of poor quality
-Surface is not flat near palm rests, looks like heat from components have caused minor warps in chassis
-poor software for finger print reader
For what I paid for it I regret buying it, Right now from what I can see the screen is starting to show age and makes the most annoying creaking noise when I open it. I should have bought a Toshiba, at least they are known for quality Laptops and design. -
4 years and still going
but i went through 2 gpu's -
i think with the way things are going now in terms of gaming and consoles, if you have a high end gaming laptop, it may last for 2 years or more.
games nowadays are developed primarily on consoles and have to take into account graphic limitations of these consoles.
therefore even newer games like mass effect 2 and assassins creed 2 wont take full advantage of the power of high end desktop gpus and will perform well on a 9800m gts as long as it aint in fhd with anti aliasing set to high.
i can see this trend lasting until new consoles come out or a resurgence of high end pc gaming.
and that is good news to gaming notebook owners -
Since june 2006 kinda
So far its had:
Replacement screen (still not sure why dell changed the screen)
replacement top half of casing x2 (crack by the hinges and the techie who replaced the motherboard cracked the white bit taking it off)
replacement battery
replacement keyboard x 4 (go through these fairly quickly for some reason)
replacement motherboard (i broke a usb port so got dell to replace)
replacement CD-RW/DVD Rom
upgraded GPU x1300 to x1400
upgraded CPU T2300e to T5500
Upgraded RAM
Upgraded HDD
at the moment the only original parts are like the bluetooth and wifi card and the bottom of the laptop casing. (Thank god for extended warranty) -
Well, mine is by no means a "gaming laptop" but so far it's lasted me exactly a year and two days, and it's showing no signs of problems, particularly to do with heat. Never seen the GPU above 63C on heavy load.
-
My Inspiron 9300 had finally had its first defect 6 months ago with the monitor going bad in 5 years. My 6860fx is going strong for over 1.5 years.
-
My Asus W3J is going on 4 years old this May. It hasn't been able to play new release/graphically intensive games for a while now, but it has been a tremendous investment. Steam's sales are helping its longevity in the gaming department. I am finally getting around to playing games like Stalker and the Witcher.
And now laptop cooler, used it on soft surfaces all the time, even spilled the occasional drink on it. Luckily my warranty replaced the keyboard I needed after that last one. Aside from this I did/do take good care of it as far as making sure vents are clear etc...
