I was thinking about picking up a gaming laptop (netbook's battery life is nice but having no muscles finally got to me).

I was eyeballing the G50VT-X5 lappie and I've heard good things about the 9800M GT and I was wondering if the GS models are comparable. And how long it would last in the gaming scene? Could I squeeze out 4 or so years of gaming out of it? Maybe not maxed res but in mid?

Thanks for all your help guys. This community is awesome and I'm sure you guys will give me some real helpful answers.

4 years is a little bit of a stretch. 3 years is probably a good estimate if you don't mind having to turn settings down to medium-low by the 3rd year.

Hard to tell what the PC scene is going to look like that far down the line. But I'd say 2 years of comfortable gaming is expectable.

i would say a 9800 gs can still play things on high for the next 1-2 years but after that it's hard to tell.

You people are way too optimistic - you know that everything in the field now is already obsolete before it hits the shelf. But for the average user, yeah, 3-4 is about right.

I'd say 2 years of solid high settings gaming.

Considering the GTX 260M is almost twice as powerful as the 9800M GS, I hope it would last more than an extra month (112 shaders vs 64 and higher clocks across the board).

Well i consider "gaming" being able to play the game at any setting ...low/medium/high...w.e

I consider a card being outdated when it cant run a game at all.

Sure the 9800M GS wont be able to run games at high detail for more than 2 years but if you pick up a laptop with the GTX 260M will last u an extra year and a half most likely.

u wont game on it for 4 years, trust me...when you see whats out then...ull get another one in 2 years or less lol...however the 9800 does overclock well so you can squeeze some more out of it once you see it lagging behind a little...although architecture, shaders, etc. are becoming most important now over raw speed

I'm already planning on getting a replacement for this Asus G50Vt by tax return time next year. I'll keep this as my secondary.
