I am sorry, but I cannot rank you very high. You lack gaming experience of NES, SNES, Genesis and Gameboy games.

People vote me considering todays age.
If you consider 10 years down the lane, I agree I'm not that much into too.
This is relative to the fact that I spent my childhood in India where consoles werent even there in the market.

If you want to be a professional gamer you are going to have to play more console games. How else will you know every characters weakness in Megaman: 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 for NES?

Same problem on the PC side though. You've listed 5 recent games you own (and 3 blizzard games you're good at)

I might consider you a big blizzard fan and/or -gamer, but gamer in general? I'll give you a 4, based on the info in this thread. Sorry kid ;)

(Just for comparison, the oldest game you listed that you own is DoW. So trying to list some of the games I've bought since that came out:
    - DoW + 2 both expansions
    - Heroes of might & magic 5
    - C&C 3
    - Supreme Commander
    - Medieval 2: Total War
    - Civ4 + expansion
    - GalCiv 2
    - Rome: Total War

Those are just the strategy games I can think of offhand. Then there are the fps'es, rpg's, adventure games and whatever else... Oblivion, Dreamfall, NWN2, Hitman 4, Guild Wars expansion, Dark Messiah, Pirates! and so on....

And then all the older games that I've bought in the same period, which I won't even attempt to count... :D

And of course, then there are all the old games I've had for ages, ranging from The Lost Vikings, or Stunts or Scorch, over the Monkey Islands', up to WC3, Half-Life, various GTA's or Deus Ex...

I don't have many consoles/console games though, so you can probably beat me there... Not because I don't like console games, but I can't buy everything... :D
Got a Sega Saturn and Dreamcast with a handful of games for each, but that's all...

Of course, I've played plenty of console games, all the way back to Genesis/SNES (And yeah, NES and Master System too, but was never a fan of those) Commodore 64 (Summer/Winter games! Wooo!), Amiga (Silkworm... Yay), and up to Xbox, Wii, 360 and so on.. Haven't yet tried a PS3 though...

Of course, I'm not aware of any official definition of a gamer, but to me, it means someone who's familiar with a wide variety of platforms, genres and games, including older ones. To me, a gamer is not someone who plays Diablo 2 for 3 years straight, but rather someone who, in the same period, plays Diablo 2 *plus* a few dozen other games. Diversity, that's the key... :D

I wonder how I fair. Have owned and sometimes use my NES,SNES,Sega Genesis, N64 and PC (oh and an original commodore 64).

Loved to play "jumpman" back in the day (some too young to remember this one).....beat it many times.

Current Games I keep up with

    Lord of the Rings Online
    World of Warcraft
    FEAR
    Halflife 2
    Battlefield 2
    Battlefield 2142
    S.T.A.L.K.E.R
    Quake4
    Doom3

(as u can tell an FPS fan)

All good games that I recommend, thought Quake 4 servers online with people are kinda scarce :(

I'm more of a strategy gamer myself then anything. Maybe you should look into some of the games Jalf posted (nice list BTW).

to be a true hardcore gamer, the these games must be on your list:
    Halo1,2
    Half-life2
    doom 3
    far cry
    fear
and at least one battlefield game

    as for consoles:
    resident evil 4
    ninja gaiden
    KOTOR
    god of war
    metal gear solid 3:snake eater

You need the Rainbow Drop to create the bridge that leads to the Dragon Masters island. Even though the graphics are so bad the bridge is about as long as your character is tall. You character should be able to jump to the island.

At this camp I go to over the summer, they have a computer lab so that I can check my facebook and whatnot. My friend was playing against these kids from Korea, and they seriously kicked his ass in Starcraft. Also, being pro in 3 games is actually really hard, you can be above average in them, but not pro.

Well... Do you have any videos that we could see online?

    ????

ALL (except maybe far cry?.. idk) of those games are for console as well as PC. and Halo started on Console.

one of my fav FPS is R63 Black Arrow and some others from that series.

but i dont really get this post
you know yourself better than anyone on here.

i think whether your a hardcore gamer or not, should be decided from a balance between the hours you play and what you know about gaming.

but from the games you say your pro at (couple being MMO) I would say definitely gamer, maybe with some other priorities.

I disagree. Everyone has their own preferences about what games they liked. And also I don't think age has anything to do with "if your a true gamer" or not. Personally I wasn't around for the SNES era so I wouldn't know.

Hardware doesn't have anything to do with being a gamer eiter -.-

IMHO to be a 'true' gamer you have to have a passion for playing any genre, on any platform, and being able to tell which games are relatively good and worth your time. You don't HAVE to play every platform, but if you have the oppurtunity to then you will relatively know what your doing and be able do it reasonably well.

Also you can't judge a gamer by whether they are very good at one game or decent at a wide variety of games. But it is my personal opinion that a 'true' gamer will be able to jump into any genre/gamestyle and be able to do reasonably well. If the "pro" in one game couldn't jump into another of a different style even if it was from the same genre I wouldn't consider them a 'true' gamer, just one with priorities or whatever.

Sorry, I meant that the only PC games in that list were FPS'es. There were a few non-FPS games, but only a few, and only on console.
My point was just that a "hardcore gamer" who plays such a narrow selection of genres isn't very hardcore.

How much u make playing games? Then not a pro (not flaming, I just mean I know professionals that suck.)
If they are all out at the same time yeah it would very very hard to excel at several games at once. I was/am extremely good (meaning I beat the pants off of those claiming to be pros, but I never got paid to play) at quite a few games (GT, Tekken2, Battlezone, Tetris :), Starcraft, Madden, Tribes, Q3, Joust, and some more). I have played some of these recently and 'I still got it'.

I think being a hardcore gamer is more about loving (and playing) all kinds of games not how much equipment you own or how good you are. It also should look at how big a thing gaming is in your life. For instance, in college I played battlezone, starcraft, and tribes 8-10 hours a day.
Being a 'pro'(hate using that word :) I mean being really good) takes a hardcore gamer focusing on 1 game. I was one of the best battlezone players on the planet, and in a tribes clan that was top ten in the world. To be a top player that is what you do...I played battlezone all day every day until I moved to a new game. I recently got to play tribes at a lan and I was shocked that I could still air disk and eagle snipe. I am not as good as I was 7 years ago but I still have the skills.

BTW-I no longer even really consider myself a gamer. Wife, kids, work, travel, and other priorities and now I am just a guy who owns a few games :(

Nope, they are discussing what it takes to be a hardcore gamer and trying to answer your questio.

You can't ask an opinion and then restrict the answers to a narrow little field of answers if you want an honest response. If you want everyone to say how good you are then go ahead and restrict the criteria....of course I would just post 'Hey, Homer, tell me how great I am."

I know thats not what you are doing, just making a point and I hope you appreciate this board as much as I do because there are so many people here that give honest, thoughtful answers.

A professional gamer knows exactly where to find the Magic flute (3 steps bellow the fountain), Erdrick's token (6 steps out into the middle of the slime) and Erdrick's Armor (must defeat the axe knight in the ruined city).

Listen up man, I really do appreciate you guys giving your views in this forum. Who else would do that???
By saying that you guys are going out of the topic is directed to those people who were discussing a specific and is only limited to players of the particular game

A professional gamer is one that makes money off it. That's a fairly standard definition of "professional".
A gamer is simply one who loves gaming in general, plays a lot of *different* games and knows a lot about games and gaming. (That's not a standard definition, but it's the one I use)

And while we're discussing random game trivia, who else can remember the code for the last level in The Lost Vikings? :D

Greg kasavin from gamespot is such one, he's been playing games for his entire life, simply everything from arcade 2D fighting games, japanese RPG's, RTS and strategy games, action games, first and third person shooters...just everything, and he's even better when it comes to writing about games as well, he's just kinda covers everything in his reviews, and he gives so much attention to how deep the gameplay is, and i like when he's impressed by a game, you can actually feel his excitement when he describes how good the game is, it's too bad that not every games is reviewed and tested by him, as the reviews written by the other guys are hit or miss. it's thanks to him, gamespot are the number one today, now that he's left, gamespot will never be the same again.
