Hey i see almost everyone here owns a new laptop, i see 95% of the members here owns a laptop with a grapahic card from the GF 8XXX series which means that you often buy a new laptop. so i was wondering how often do you buy a new laptop?
Me? the one in my sig is my first, got it 2 weeks ago and i use it for work mostly.

My first/last notebook I bought was back in 06', Dell E1705.
My recent acquire was through a trade. But I'd say every few years depending on how my finances and life is handling at the moment. -
If for basic applications, once every 3 or 4 years. If it is used for gaming, every two. Wife had a Sony Vaio for 5 years. Amazing how quickly technology becomes antiquated, and you realize it after you get a new laptop.

I have had mine for just over 3 years now
Getting a new one in July/August.
-
I keep computers for a 3 year cycle. I don't care if the GPU goes out of date, I'm not spending huge amounts of cash just to play some games. Unless it gets unusable within those years for image editing/creating software I won't buy another one until my 3 year warranty is at least over.
If it comes down to a bunch of games I want to play are released, I'd just buy a 360 and save 2.3 grand. -
I got a laptop because of my studies (namely: I needed one). Like mentioned by Arquis: me too will not get a new one until the warranty expires or I'll get a desktop (cheaper + upgradeable).
-
laptop in my sig is the first one I bought, mostly for college. probably won't be buying another one till I graduate in 4 years.
-
sometimes 2-3 years and sometimes 2-3 months if i don't like the one i purchased.
-
after I have driven my current one into the ground--I'm cheap!

I would have bought a new laptop by now if I was still using a laptop as my primary gaming machine. I built a desktop recently and it is my gaming machine. I don't plan to get a new laptop for some time, this Sager is more than adequate for slightly older games (2005-ish), web surfing, multimedia, and so on. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
-
The warranty just ran out on my notebook so I am considering what crazy stuff I could do with it
-

i would reserve doing crazy stuff while its under warranty.
now, if you break it, you pay. before, they pay. i don't follow your logic. -
Well warranty doesn't cover everything does it? Either way I will be getting a new one in the summer anyway
-
The way I go, when the warranty finishes, consider getting one within the next 1-2 years.
-
I bought one in 2006,then another in 2007 and planning to buy another in 2008
-
at least one each year.
-
einhander , you have like 6 in the last 3 years
So you`re lying, it`s 2 per year
-
why would u need a new 1 each year?
-
Because a new technology comes out every summer
I`d like to get an Asus EEE Pc because it`s unique, and a new gaming laptop with the most powerful mobile gpu ,if mine won`t upgrade.
Bleeding edge,you know. -
well if i were u i would rather save the money and invest em in a business. Kind of wasting money getting a new high end laptop each year. If you need something new each year get a low end and a gaming dsktop. If i had the money u used for ur three last laptops to invest i could really make some sweet cash from it
-
like every half year for me now?
-
once a three years. but this year i get two! luckily one going 2 be a gift
-
-
-
pretty much everyday
-
I'm on my third laptop within the last 3 months.
I had an HP Centrino for a year. Then a Sony VAIO for a month, and now my new Vostro which I'll keep from now on. -
well, i got my Dell 1520 maxxed out *except for CPU* right as they came out, as I needed it to be able to run Zbrush and Autodesk Inventor smoothly, and of course vidja games! But, this is my first laptop ever, and being a college student I don't plan on buying another one until my warranty runs out when i graduate, mainly because i know i'll be piss poor until that time, w/ school books and tuition and stuff to pay for that takes priority. as long as this thing is alive and kicking, it's good enough for me.

I buy a laptop every 3 or 4 years.
-
I get a new laptop every night. I use it for around 7 - 12 hours and by the time my alarm goes off, it's gone.
-
-
Geeze we really shell out a lot for laptops don't we
. Im on my first laptop which i've had for about two years. Hoping to keep this one for at least 6 more months then go on a 3-4 year cycle for buying laptops.

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
The laptop I use is also shared with my brother. It was bought by my mom and aunt almost five years ago! I plan to buy my brother a laptop after Centrino 2 is released, and get myself one for college next year when Calpella is released. so basically, I plan to buy a new laptop after a few new platforms have been released.
-
Now I've got the wheels turning. Maybe I'll give my nephew my laptop since he'll need one for college this fall, and get sometihng with an 8800m GTX. Or after my wife smacks me for mentioning it, maybe just spend $500 on a bargain one for him and save me some $$$.

I sold my Aspire 5920G last week & now thinking about to buy MBP or Sager NP5793 (Or MBP with gaming Desktop)
-
-
I had for 3 years a HP, then I sold it, bought a Sony Vaio SZ5 one year ago (still have this one) and then bought a Toshiba X200 last October, then sold it and now I've just ordered a SAGER NP 5793. I hope I will keep it for at least an year
.

About every four years, either a new desktop or new laptop. That's about how often there is a compelling reason to change (total crash, Pentium II not enough anymore, GeForce 4 not enough anymore, who knows what in four years).
I think the reason so many people here have GeForce 8 is that they join looking for advice on a new laptop, and the ones that stay tend to be more technophilic than your average computer user anyways, and thus more likely to buy high-end. -
This laptop I recently bought (see sig) is my first gaming machine. I plan to hold on to it, until it can no longer play the average game at decent frames per second, or until the Geforce 9xxx becomes the standard GPU in your mid-range gaming notebook, whichever comes first. So I'm looking at maybe two years.
For me, it all comes down to price. I never intend to spend $1000 on a laptop; this Vostro ran me for less than $900, so I'll be looking for a similar deal when I need an upgrade. -

I had planned on buying a new laptop after I graduate this May, which would equal a new laptop in 1.5yrs, but couldn't pass up an 8800gts for $1300. So as it stands now I have purchased a new laptop every 12 months making minimum wage and studying...have no idea how fast I'll burn through them once I graduate and have some money
-
My first notebook I bought was back in 2000 and the most recent in 2006.
I buy a new notebook every 2 to 3 years. I usually buy something mid-range so 2 to 3 years is basically how long it lasts me, at least with games that is. Actually I'm planning to purchase a new laptop within this month or the month after. I was going to go for the same amazing Gatway P-6831FX everyones going for, but unfortunitly Bestbuy Canada sold out, so right now I'm thinking of going for the next best deal being the Asus M51sn. -
every 3-4 years or till it's broken, which ever comes first
-
every 4-5 years or, like the previous user said, untill it breaks
-
I've had mine since September 2006. I'm thinking of getting a new one soon mainly because I've finally realized that a desktop replacement machine is *not* what I want. What I want is either a 12.1" or a 13.3". Thinking of getting a used Sony SZ, or a refurb M1210. Ultraportables are the way to go for me (=.
Maybe sell this one and build a desktop. -
Normally every 2 years, though at the moment Dawn of War and Company of Heroes are 100% unchallenged by any current or forthcoming games, so I may hang onto this one for even longer. It's used for college and also LAN games.
-
Hmm I'd say every 2-3 years for me.
-
Oh and also worth mentioning that it's 2 years because I always buy mid-range, if I was able to afford high end laptops each time in the line of 7950GTX or 8800M, that'd be at least stretched to 3-4 years.
How often do you buy new laptop?
