    hello all. my first post.

I'm pretty sure i have the 8600m GT DDR3 because it says so in the purchase order(asus g1s-b2). But recently i ran across an asus laptop with the exact same chassis/case as my g1s-b2 at my local best buy. it had the same original price, but this one was slashed from $1599 to $1099. I'm pretty sure that one didn't have the new DDR3 for that cheap, but how/where can I check?

I bought my laptop from gentechpc and it was kind of shady. I mean I electronically paid them $1500 and then a laptop just showed up at my door. It all happened in like 2 days. I'm used to my late uncle, who owned a computer retail store, sending me computers for free. Anyways, what i'm trying to say is i'm not so sure they actually put that in there. y'know? with ddr3 in a vidcard being so new and all. so how/where can i check to make sure it is ddr3?

If it had the same case as yours, there's a pretty good chance it was the Asus G1 with the Geforce Go 7700 GDDR3.

A quick way to check which video card it is would be to run "dxdiag" from the start menu, and click the display tab.

Easy, look at the core/memory clocks of the GPU (using nTune or RivaTuner or any other program you may know), for the 8600mGT DDR2 they are 475/400, while the GDDR3 version are 475/700.

Nobody can change the video RAM on G1S except Asus, the video card and Video RAM is built-in on the mainboard, GDDR3 video ram is global spec meaning no matter where you bought it from it's GDDR3. :)

In order to change manufacturer's spec on a notebook will cost you billions of dollars to build a production line and R&D so that's not possible, at least not for us, if a company who is capable of modify mainboard and video card on a notebook then they are capable of produce their own brand of notebook, therefore, there is no reason for them to be just a reseller.

Download NTune software from nVidia.com and check to see if the Video RAM is 700MHz.
