    or rivatuner, if you're looking for a program that doesn't kill performance.

    Thanks guys i feel like a noob but fraps worked great. Showed a constant 25-30 fps and only dipped to 22 fps with everything on max and 1920x1200 res. My new gtx 260 should be here any minute, cant wait to see how it improves it. +reped you all :)

    Okay, why does everyone assume fraps kills performance. I have the full version, and just displaying the FPS doesn't hurt performance at all. It's when you start to record video when it all slows down (naturally, as it takes a lot to encode).

    +1, fraps DOES NOT kill performance.

    I actually had installed evga precision and noticed it does it in there too. L4D showed a constant 60fps throughout battle at everything maxed out. I'm guessing this game has a limit at 60.

    If you are sure you do not have Vsync enabled then perhaps it is limited since if your refresh rate is 60hz and Vsync is on, it will never go above 60fps.

    I'm pretty sure that it doesn't affect performance

    But it definitely changes our perspective of performance

    Often if I see the framerate falling to mid-twenties i feel that it is unplayable
    This feeling is much less prominent when I have no idea of my framerate :D

    @nizzy
    That is probably the case
    A number of games have a cap on framerate
    I believe that Half-Life 2 and CS:S have a cap of 299/300 IIRC

    With vsync off my 4870 1GB gets between 50 and 140 FPS with everything maxed, so your GTX 260 will do just fine.

    HL2:CS:S are capped at 300 but fps_max can change that easily enough.
