    Hey,

So no matter how you start assassins creed, if you have a dx10 card and windows vista you will be forced to play in dx10 no matter what. I had to play the game in crappy resolution. So I snooped around and found out that if you go to the game directory delete the assasins creed exe called "AssassinsCreed_Dx10" and rename the "AssassinsCreed_Dx9" to "AssassinsCreed_Dx10" it will be forced to run in directx9 mode. This Really gave me a 10 to 20 fps boost in the game. I suggest you try it. Also this works with steam.

You should find the game in this folder C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\assassins creed

This helped me. Let me know if this helped anyone else.

I play the game in 1600 with all graphics on and aa set to 3. I have a 8600m gt overclocked.

Actually, I found there is a major difference.

I was forced to play in the DX 10 mode, but it resulted in catastrophe. All I saw was a blank screen with moving figures, but no color. Everything was white. When I played in DX 9 mode, I could see everything clearly. So in my opinion, the DX 9 mode does make a difference.

    It's probably your drivers howie

But they said "DX10 is only used to boost the performances".

I'm expecting your drivers to have something to do with it. Which one are you using?

Hey man, thanks for trying to answer, but I got it to work. I had to run in DX 9 mode. Not DX 10.

You got it to work in DX9, however it should work in DX10 with the hardware you speced in your other thread, I'd look into a driver update.

OP is right, so far DX 10 has just pissed me off, I shouldn't have waited for DX 10.

It promised performance increase as it allows the graphic card to be used to its full potential, so far its been BS, every game out there runs better in DX 9 and there isn't much visual difference

Thats because we really havent had a game thats been coded for DX10 from the ground up, games are built upon DX9 with DX10 being pretty much an afterthought for devolopers right now, and thats not going to change until the majoraty of users has DX10 hardware and a DX10 OS.

    LOL!

Hate to say it, but didn't the devs make a big deal about how Assassin's Creed would run so much better in DirectX 10 than 9? That it was optimized for DirectX 10?

It still does run better in DX10 if you have slower hardware and are running on low settings. The reason that DX10 isn't faster than DX9 yet is that so far there hasn't been a game that is built and runs only on DX10. When that happens, devs can take advantage of the efficiency improvements made in DX10.

Well, according to the lead developer Charles Beauchemin, it should run "faster" in DirectX 10 regardless.

    From the interview:

    --- QUOTE ---

PCGH: How much of a performance hit will the improved optics of DX 10 incur? With all details maxed out is a typical first gen DX 10 card already running at its limits?

Charles Beauchemin: No performance hit occurs, since no improved optics are implemented. However, when running on Vista, DirectX 10 version speed will be much faster than its DirectX 9 counterpart (also running on Vista).

    --- END QUOTE ---

Yet according to Vista users DirectX 10 kills fps performance by 10-20 fps, hence this thread.

    Couple questions,

Why can't you just run the game using the AssassinsCreed_DX9 launcher to get the going in DX9 rather than having to delete and rename stuff?

Also, is there anyway in game to see if you're running DX9 or DX10?

I have a m1530 (c2d 2.2ghz, 8600m gt ddr3, 3gb ram) and when i play in 1024x768 with all graphics set to high i get pretty bad framerates. Stays near mid 20s and dips into teens often. I tried what you said (renaming the dx10 thing to dx9) and it still didnt run that great. i am running 169.09 drivers.

delete the direct x 10 file and rename the direct x9 one. It will launch the dirext10 file regradless if you rename it only. it has to be deleted.

From what I've read in various forums, powerhouse cards IE 8000's 512mb or higher do better with DX10 than DX9, lower end cards tend to take a hit, I'm using the latest (quite moldy) 169 vista 64 whql drivers and my 320 chugs a little bit in certain areas in DX10, that seems to go away in DX9.

ive updated drivers and it is noticibly better but i still cant get close to wat your getting. On 1024x768 res and all graphics on med/high, i get anywhere from 15-60 fps. avg around 24. I just wish it would stop dipping into the teens which really takes away from the experience.

Already posted it in another thread but it probably suits better here:

I have to start it with the DX9 shortcut, since the DX10 somehow crashes when i get to the room with the professor and want to continue the game. The screen is just totally bright/white and the action just stops (no problem with the sound..). Might this be the cause of an outdated driver (is bout 4-5 months old..)?
Plus is it actually possible to see the difference between DX9 and 10?

Make a shortcut for the DX9 exe , the location of the file will vary depending on how you purchased it, if you bought the retail version it will be in the ubisoft directory, if you bought through steam you'll need to dig around a bit in the steam directory, dunno about direct to drive.

so what your saying is that i dont need to go through the entire process of deleting the dx10.exe and renaming the dx9.exe...
all i have to do is make a short cut of the dx9.exe to play it in dx mode?..

    thanx for your reply

Overall my system handled the game very well in DX10 except for the dock area, didnt matter if it was 9 or 10, I had to lower settings considerably just to get through it.

For me, DX10 didn't show properly. You couldn't see buildings or your own clothes or anything. All was coloured dark grey. This i likely because of old drivers, and while newer drivers were faster in benchmarks, i can't use on account of the DVI output gets limited.

I still am not somewhat satisfied as to how it runs.
    I can play it at 1920x1200, all 2/4 and 2/3 shadows,at 20-30 fps, but at 1280x800 , all 4/4 , shadows 3/3 it`s still in the 25-30s. Weird stuff.
    Dx9 though.
I`m not that impressed of the game...after playing UT3, the sceneries in AC don`t look that good somehow...

Runs great on my machine in DX10 but I'll try DX9.

I think the CPU is my bottleneck. I tried a few different resolutions and the FRAPS reading was pretty much always the same.

I would reduce crowd density, but that is such a big part of the game.

I can run it on my OC'd 8800M GTX under XP at max settings (1 x multisampling) at 1680x1050 with 30-55fps. It never drops below 30fps and it's never laggy. ;)

Have you gotten to the dock area yet? That brings my desktop rig to its knees, if i turn away from the water the fps jump up to what they should, with a lot of water present its a slideshow, and since you have to go boat hopping, not looking at water isnt an option.

You'd know if you got there, its the last or second to last assigned kill, Sibrand or something like that, paranoid templar knight killing old scholars in white robes cause he thinks they are assassins, and you have to hop from boat to boat to get to his ship.Actually ists the only dock area that I can recall. I'm not talking about arieal costal views. It may just be a limitation of my 320mb frame buffer, but to the degree of the performance loss I'm curious if the 512 cards have any trouble with that area too.

There is a another way if you dont mind me raining on your thread. I dont mean to.

if you navagate to the folder where the game is installed in C:
Find the Game.exe application and right click and send to desktop as a shortcut.

Go to the short cut on your desktop and right click on the file.

Go to Properties > under the shortcut tab find the target bar: In it you should have something like this

    "C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Assassin's creed\AssassinsCreed_Launcher.exe" -dx9

    Add this command -dx9

This will force the application to run in dx9 mode. Old trick for Bioshock
