Given reseller website's abysmal capacity to identify a Max-Q card in laptop, is there are way to know that a card is a Max-Q version ? Is there a smaller power requirement that can tip you off or something similar that is a clear indication that the card is the Max-Q version ?

I've seen a few interesting notebook with GTX 1060 and no clear identification of a Max-Q version only to be dissapointed when ready to pull the trigger. The 10-15% performance drop can be acceptable, but I want to know beforehand that that's what I'm getting into.

Most of them will have a sticker MAX Q or specifically state 10xx MQ or Max Q.

Sticker is nice but I'm talking mostly when online shopping.
They often only list something "nvidia GTX 1060 with 6Gb of GDDR5 memory"
I agree they should always mention "Max-Q" but so far it's only like 60% of them that advertize it right.

The Dell inspiron 7577 is a good exemple, they list a Max-Q deep within the manual but on the website specs there is no mention of Max-Q
That's why I'm wondering if there is a giveaway like lower power or smaller PSU that can tip you off to a Max-Q being present.

They listed it as MAX Q 1060. http://www.dell.com/ed/p/inspiron-15-7577-laptop/pd
If you're unsure about MAX Q, use go to product support of any laptop and see video driver, if they list as Max Q then its probably a Max q card, no doubt about that.

I saw this coming from a mile, it's the same with intels U series.

People see a notebook, see I7 and GTX 1060, and suddenly realize, oh wait, this is a I7U and GTX 1060MaxQ, performance down the drain.

both Nvidia and Intel are using this kind of advertisement to fool people who don't know much about hardware.

Processors are less confusing since the regular and U series usually don't share naming numbers. Per exemple you have the i5-7200u but the regular serie is i5-7400.

GPUs however are a pain. There are 4 different GTX1060 but a few retaillers don't identify them clearly. Is it 3Gb or 6Gb, is it Max-Q or regular, etc.

Maybe it's designed deliberately to fool unwary customers.

    Sounds like scam to me.

Yeah, that's the sad thing. Most people will say "I have a laptop with an i7 and GTX 1060" only to have it perform like one with an i5 and GTX 1050.

    it's more I3 and 1050. a I5 HQ is far more powerful than an I7 U

Dual-core i7's are only justified by their price tag..

Edit: see i7-7500U here. Tray price $393.

Maybe they didn't cripple it badly enough to be in compliance with the NVIDIOT guidelines for Max-Q poopiness.

Oh'no. Crippled after NVIDIOT guidelines, but advertised more like 1070. Aka Scam!! See the small fine typo in Yellow print.

The mere fact that Q-Max dung exists qualifies it as a scam.
(Yes, I said it wrong on purpose out of no respect for the product or the people that made it.)

I wouldn't even mind MAXQ as long as it's called something else like GTX 1055(GTX 1060maqQ) or GTX 1065(GTX 1070MAXQ), depending on performance maybe adjusting the name, but at least make it that you literaly cannot confuse it with anything else.

It would be much harder to scam the kiddos if they distinguished it. Confusion and playing to the ignorance of consumers is their ticket to cash-in on this filth. Plus, some of their friends on Facebook would reject them because they are different and they would have to commit suicide because the virtual bullying and rejection would be unbearable for them.

More Scam from Gigabyte's own web site... 10% performance increase vs. 6th Intel Core CPU. How will this 7th gen Intel BGA - 7700hq compete with previous gen aka 6th gen (6700K) ?
    upload_2017-9-27_15-26-35.png

This with stock 6700K. Not oc'd. With BGA you are screwed!! And 7700hq ain't much better. Those who bought Jokebook's with 6700hq for the future (3-5 years) will see worse results as time passes.

They're not allowed to sell a unit without stating "<name-of-graphics-card> with Max-Q design" on it.

If you see any company selling Max-Q without listing ANYWHERE about it, I'd say send Nvidia an e-mail about it and/or try reporting it to some agency.

Oh it's listed, just once deep within the product manual. Apparently they took a page from the hitchhiker guide to the galaxy and hid the mention the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying Beware of the Leopard

If you shop in store the sticker will usually show it but it's when shopping online that it gets more tricky.

It should be in the same place where the promo stuff describes the GPU, like below.
