Try to run as admin too, that sometimes stops it.

Ive installed it on a Vista32 system with no problems . Everything was working just like on XP . Used CD-Drive and Original CDs . Then i copied the installation folder from the Vista machine on to my XP machine and it worked without any problems . Played it for a while , no crashes . Try doing the same .
Or the least you can do is : reformat > fresh OS install > newest drivers > install D2:LoD . Hope this helps .

ok man i was having the same problem as you, but im on a much lower stat notebook, only 1.7ghz and 1gig of ram here. i got it working a few minutes ago after thinking about some of the main differences betwene vista and xp, such as the taskbar and its behavior, i tried switching my computers theme to windows classic with the square boxes and all and now each time i open diablo 2 l.o.d. the screen with flash twice then play the game perfectly, ive tried it about 5 times so far and no mess ups, hopefully this will help you out.

Do you have the latest patch I got the same error you describe off a fresh install version 1.03 updated to 1.11 and no problems. I never had to change any settings anywhere.

Please be more specific. My guess is you have a color issue? Right-click the icon, select properties, then check the 256 color option under the compatibility tab. If that's not the case then I don't know dude. Move on from the old school games.

try virtual PC - free from Microsoft - except you need a valid XP license.
