So my shiny new M17x R4 just arrived, and I was of course eager to test the GTX680m overclocking potential ... Just to find out that neither MSI Afterburner nor EVGA Precision X nor nVidia inspector got the GPU to overclock. While I could set gpu to its maximum of +153 MHz and the RAM successfully overclocked, the gpu remained at its default 719 MHz no matter what (even though GPU-Z and Inspector reported the higher clock speed and even an alledged Boost clock)! Anyone else had any success in this matter or even any idea what the problem is?

    EDIT:

The newly released BIOS A05 resolves the problem!

GPU boost is working and overclocking the core is now possible up to a maximum of +135 MHz - running @894 MHz core now!!

    Use nVidiaInspector.

What program are you using to check the speeds? Run MSI Kombustor and let us know what it reports.

You`re not alone. Apparantly Dell have locked the VBIOS or something so that Alienware users can`t overclock their 680M. However a different VBIOS seem to do the trick since there is some french people who have overclocked their Dell 680M with the R4

    i doubt that.

when using 3dmark11, the max. temperature has been ~65°C, using furmark its ~66°C.

it´s more like dells going "thanks for buying our high end gaming system including high end prices, now please off" (again!)...

My R4 with 680M is arriving on the weekend :D

SO yeah what do I need to do? :D

and eventually I'll probably want to set up a permanent mild overclock, that'll be there whenever the laptops plugged in or something

Yeah, although the 680 is running cool it would have been at the design stage during the 580 overheating debacle. Probably just playing safe. Same reason for the 2gb, that is what they tested with so stay with what you have tested. It's a dell philosophy, there are a bunch of CPU's that work but dell will only sell and authorize what they already support.

Go to techinferno to download a modified GTX 680M (DELL) vBIOS and flash it to unlock the +135MHz limit

If you are not willing to, follow the link in my sig for a makeshift unlock method

So just using afterburner to overclock wont work? We have to unlock something first?

Just out of curiosity, what games is it that you guys are trying to play that the 680m cannot handle at stock clocks?

NONE. I just wanna know for future reference. Ive been trying to find a reason to OC the 680M and upgrade my CPU but havent found it yet :)

I doubt there is any game that will need an OC'd 680M except Crysis 3, but that's because it's in Alpha status, not even Beta, meaning there is no guarantee that anything we see in it's current state will be in the final version (theoretically). Either way, very buggy and not optimized.

It's always fun to know the limits of your card. It seems the Clevo models with an overvolt will be limited by the PSU though, so anyone later in your laptop's life if they want to push the limits, will need a fatter PSU. 180W just isn't gonna cut it. Otherwise I'm running stock voltage, at 900MHz GPU and 2200MHz vRAM because I can and temps are barely affected.

Temps aren't the only thing that affect an IC. Timing plays a very big role. You can run pretty cool and not require higher voltage but if you violate timing constraints, you are going to crash your program.

I'm struggling in GW2 WvW right now even with 854/2700 OC. Getting high teens or low 20's with the graphics settings at the lowest level (max performance). This is in big zerg action but still sux.

I can see questions why to overclock, blank replays and even more other stuff on "How to overclock GTX 680M ?" thread, BUT no any real answer for the overclocking, stop killing this website! if you don't know just leave the thread and that's it and kill your time with something else.

Okay let me make this as simple as POSSIBLE.

What you'll need to FURTHER OC your GPU is a vBIOS. Not the regular BIOS but rather the vBIOS for your GPU.

The way to do that is by using the [GUIDE] NVIDIA VBIOS flashing as explained very well on techinferno.

After that use on of the following svl7 vBIOS' for your machine. NVIDIA Kepler VBIOS mods - Overclocking Editions, modified clocks, voltage tweaks
NVIDIA Kepler VBIOS mods - Overclocking Editions, modified clocks, voltage tweaks

Now just in case... This is for the 7970M (Clevo only... DELL and MSI flashes can be found around the NBR forums) http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...-7970m-modded-vbios-clevo-p1xxhm-laptops.html

ENJOY. And most important of all, always check you did everything correctly as well as your TEMPS
... also (don't forget to backup your original vBIOS with either GPU-Z or something else) :) good luck

I'll do a write-up when I get a chance. It's not too difficult. Mobius 1 did a good guide however, using nvidia inspector if you want to go over +135MHz on the core, then there's some BIOS options that set default clock speed at something higher. When I get a chance I'll do just that. Otherwise TechInferno is definitely a great resource for such things.

I have an m18xr2. Aren't these different from the m17xr4, in that our 680's ARE overclockable, right outta the box?
