I would like to hook my notebook up to a multimonitor display for trading and Photoshop work when at home (and general multi-tasking I guess!) - any recommendations on how best to link it to three vertical/portrait 1920x1080 HD monitors?

Will also be upgrading my notebook probably to a HP dv6t ...

    any particular graphics card suggestions?
advice about external devices e.g. Matrox TripleHead2Go is also very welcome.

    Thanks in advance!

Get a eyefinity gpu from AMD and a triple monitor stand.

Thanks for that great suggestion - found a useful link with info on Eyefinity set-up info according to the desired monitor configuration, performance etc.:

Looking at the Eyefinity AMD Radeon HD in more detail ... it looks like I would need 3 monitor displays but I think the card only has VGA + DVI so still need a DiplayPort, so would need another graphics card - bit tough with a notebook.

Any ideas anybody? Any way to run 3 monitors with just the 2 ports?
The Matrox will do this I think, but I don't think it can manage the vertical/portrait orientation

oh you want to use your laptop to do this.

best thing is IMO just USB - VGA adapters.

I do not like the matrox and its expensive.

Thanks for that - so does using the USB-VGA adapter set-up allow for a multi-monitor display or just multiple clones of the original display?

Looking a bit further I've come across this for $150:

VTBook: Notebook Multi Monitor Solution: Multiple Displays on your Laptop!

Seems like there is basically a PC type II card with connector which works as a graphics card + dual monitor adapter + use any available display ports = mulitmonitor display

Anyone have any experience with this VTBook set-up?

If you are upgrading the laptop, you could choose some model that already supports Eyefinity. Unfortunately I can think of only couple models right now, Asus G73 and HP Envy 17 and both are bit expensive gaming laptops. Some Lenovo and HP business laptops too.

There are more, those were only examples I could remember.

Well, isn't he going to need a pretty powerful laptop just to get 3 monitors running on it anyway...?

I personally probably wouldn't even try. Get an average (cheap) laptop, and build a desktop with the money you save that can handle the 3 monitors. It's not like you're going to be walking around with those monitors... right <_< >_>

You can get a Shuttle SH67H3, size of a toaster, supports socket 1155 Core i3/i5/i7, and can fit a single dual width card, but then you could run a powerful eyefiniti AMD GPU to give you what you need if space is limited. But I agree, if you are in need of a triple monitor setup, then a laptop really isn't the best option, because anything that can support this will most likely be a desktop replacement laptop, which will be big and heavy anyhow.

HDMI is also pretty standerd for vid card outputs on laptops, normally theyll have something like 1 vga, 1 display, and 1 hdmi, and you can get an adapter for all of them to change them to other display cable formats.

i actually have a triple monitor adapter at home for review that I can sell you cheap, its the equivilant to the matrox TH2G digital edition.

I really do need to do a review on it, just have not bothered to unhook my monitors and mess with this.

Thanks heaps for those suggestions KLF - and perhaps Dell?

Good point MrFong! - I started another thread to find a light powerful 15.6" 1080p notebook with long battery life. Almost bought an HP but foiled by customer service - maybe going with an ASUS now. This will do the job - screens are for trading and image editing which I do at home; during business/travel hours I just need max screen real estate.

Thanks WingNut will look into that option - any info links?

daranik doesn't that still only give me 2 external monitors (not counting notebook display)? and ideally I'd like them all 3 portrait/vertical mode

love to hear more about your config there Vicious

My config is 3x Dell U2410's and 1x 37" LVM37W3 all hooked to a single AMD 5870 in my desktop.

However I have the Digital TripleHead2Go boxed up that I need to review. Its made from Mview a foreign company that mirrored the Matrox products.

I have not used it yet since I do not need it and it cant support 3x1920x1200 @ 60hz it can only run that high of a res @ 57hz (same for the Matrox) it will run 3x any resolution lower than that though like 1680x1050 @ 60hz.

Hey vicious never had the time but my humble compliments for your reviews on your site.
Yesterday i watched a few of them and i find your thoughts very professional and most important, honest.
I saw youre gaming with the das keyboard, im actually using g15 and g19. Beside the lack of fancy features, is they keyboard really worth for gaming?
Sorry for the ot, just to show my appreciation for your work.

Alienware M18x Gaming Laptop Details | Dell

    Dual 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon™ HD 6970M - AMD CrossFireX™
    (1x) Mini-Display Port
(1x) HDMI 1.4 Audio and Video Output
(1x) HDMI 1.3 Audio and Video Input
    (1x) VGA Port

I'm not going to see how much that would cost. It would only make me feel sad :p

HP 8540w has ATI Firepro, 8560p has ATI also. Both of those would need the Advanced Dock to connect multiple monitors (only 2 monitor plugs in the laptop itself) but I don't have time to check of those cards actually support Eyefinity, according to the page linked below they should (8540w has 5800 and 8560p has 6470).

    AMD Eyefinity Validated Dongles

Common thing to all solutions is that the ability to run three or more monitors at once is available only in the high-end workstation products and they are so much more expensive overall (but those workstation-quality laptops are generally better than cheaper models so you get more in other aspects too).

Cheapest option would be a small desktop, perhaps that shuttle already mentioned, equipped with basic Eyefinity supporting card. Everything you can buy today is powerful enough for your use, so having a high-end gaming or 3D CAD workstation is a bit overkill :)
