I don't really know what is comparable anymore. I want to buy a newer gaming laptop, but my budget is under $1000 and if money gets tight, I may be looking at sub $700

Because of this, I want to know if it is even worth it to buy a laptop with a high end graphics card. My desktop has an 8800 GT card that I recently got as as an RMA upgrade.

Also, for the time being, the only game I have my eyes on is Deus Ex: Human Revolution. My monitor is 1440x900 so I won't be cranking the resolution high at all. I was looking for the closest newer mobile card based on Passmark scores, and the card I ideally would buy with a new laptop:

    Geforce 8800 GT- 966
    Quadro FX 3800M - 968
    Radeon HD 6770M - 1,454

What does this mean performance wise? Should I just stick to gaming with the 8800 GT and save some money?

Well when i got my g73 with a 5870m, it performed almost as well as my 8800gt SLI rig.. so most modern day mobile chips will beat a 8800gt..

I suggest you look into just getting a new gpu.. even if youre running the old PCI express 1.1(which i was running) you'll benefit greatly and it would be much cheaper than a gaming laptop..
otherwise you could look into an old/refurbished g73 or an old alienware with a 5870m or 460m

the 8800gt is indeed less powerful than the 5770 (5870m) that you posses, however the performance should be noticeable, if sli is working right

basically I would just get another desktop gpu and be done with it, might as well fetch a gtx 560ti or a 6950

I have an Athlon 64 x2 5000+. Do I realistically have room to upgrade before I the CPU bottlenecks things?

that athlon is an AM2, see if your mobo is AM2+ capable if it is, get a cpu that supports it, thus avoiding the cpu bottleneck and get a ccheaper gpu like the 6870 (6970m of sorts its actually based on the 6850) or the gtx 560 (gtx 485m/gtx 580m)

The mobo I purchased was pretty much a launch product for the AM2 socket. Unfortunately I can't update the BIOS to make it AM2+ comparable, so I'm stuck with the Athlon 64 line, and whatever kind of overclocking I can do.

If u OC that cpu and 8800gt and play at a low res, somewhere around 1280x1024 then it if an ok gaming machine. Although you wouldnt be able to max anything it would still play on medium to low, even high on some older titles

Yeah, I'm just concerned with Deus Ex.

It runs at ~20 FPS and 800 x 600 all low on my XPS 1530m. But I can't test out my desktop till I go back to college.

Well, the minimum requirements are a 2 ghz dual core CPU and an 8800 series nVidia card, so you're probably at the minimum or just above it, you'll probably be able to run it but not crank up the settings.

I would not bother trying to upgrade your CPU any more than just overclocking it, you're going down a technological dead end without upgrading the mobo to AM3/1155.

The desktop 8800gt is more or less equal to gtx260m/9800m gt.
Same shaders count, same dx architecture. The main difference is that the desktop comes with 384mb of VRAM or 512; the gtx260m/9800m gtx comes with 512/1024mb.
Also the desktop version have a bus bandwidth of 320bit (or more I can remember) while mobile have a 256bit bus.
For the mobile comparison, generally anything above 192bit with either ddr3 (as desktop 8800) or ddr5 is considered high end.

This said, if you want a similar
or greater performance in a notebook you should look for:

    Dx10 cards:
    Gtx280m
    Gtx285m
    Quadro fx3700
    Quadro fx3800

    Dx11 cards:
    Gtx 460m/560m
    Ati hd5850m
    Ati hd6770m

    Good compromise specially oced:
    Ati hd5650m/5730m/6570m
    Nvidia optmius gt555m

Bear in mind that as for compromise you will get more or less similar performance, in the most cases as for gt555m the performance will be slightly lower.

    Hope it helps.
Ps: if you try to get a laptop with one of these cards, please stay away from Amd mobile CPUs. Intel still dominates so look for either i5/i7.

GT555m (192bit GDDR3) will be faster actually, as will the 6770 in modern titles.

The 8800GT will perform similar to GTX 9800M
The 9800GT will perform similar to GTX 260M
And GTX 280M will perform somewhere between the 9800GT and the 9800GTX

    9800gt has a 55nm while the 8800gt has a 65nm

Indeed, and the difference it brings in performance is....
(I did already link this :p) Video Card Comparison - GPUReview.com But 55nm 9800 would overclock more and it would be cooler.

And the first 9800GT models were just rebadged 8800GT's with 65nm tech. They just had to rename it, since 8800 would be thought as slower than 9600 series :)

Yeah because they created the 9600 series instead of 8700 lol.

The 8800 or 9800 GT is about equal with the GTX 260M, GT 555M, and 6770M.

The next tier starts with the GTX 460M and 560M, Mobility 5850 (GDDR5) or 5870.

I still haven't felt the need to upgrade my desktop 8800GT. It's still chugging along most modern games at high settings. Amazing, but I never thought when I bought it in 2007 that it would still be as good as it is. (1680x1050)

Crysis 2 - The mid-range setting (forget what they call it)
    Borderlands - High
Bioshock 2 - High AA off
    Mass Effect 2 - High
Call of Duty (BO and MW2) - High
    Assassins Creed 2 - High

I'm not sure if you're getting the same results, or what games you play, but I think you might be disappointed if you buy a notebook wanting noticeably better results in your price range.

And I'm not sure what modern game it can't play in at least medium settings?

I'd either upgrade your desktop card or wait a bit longer for "the right" notebook.
