Other specs include a Core 2 Duo @ 2 GHz (I might have to downgrade to 1.6 or 1.4 GHz if my dad says the price is too high) and 2 gigs of ddr2 667. I will be running Windows XP. I am going to run at 1024 x 768 (if someone could tell me how to run it so that the 1024 x 768 is in the middle and the outside is black so that I get better image quality at the cost of picture size, that would be great), and I will be doing plenty of .cfg edits. Wondering what kind of settings I can handle. Thanks.

The scaling you mention when playing at 1024x768 resolution can be done in your NVIDIA control panel, where you have options for resolution scaling (fit to screen, black bars etc.)
Crysis will run at about medium settings. -
medium settings for good frame rates

Crysis will run, probably midium high settings

i hate to be honest.. not really,
Crysis isn't all that great of game. sure it looks good, but gameplay leaves you hanging.. a lot. It's an average first person shooter at best. I hope you're not getting a new computer just to play it.
and if you are... yes med. high, and you'll probably want to stick with the dx9 option. dx10 will bring fps WAY down even with that card.
oh yeah.. don't skimp on the processor! -
I don't know first-hand yet, ( I'm still waiting for my sager 9262 to show up ) but from what I've read in the sager/clevo threads people with the 8800 gtx are only able to run crysis on all medium with any sort of decent frame rate, which leads me to believe that it would be impossible to run it on medium ( and definitely not med-high )with an 8600gt.

The answer is "very well." Don't listen to those who say it doesn't handle the game well. They say it either because a. they have a defective card or b. they don't even have 8600MGT (99% b, and 1% a)

I have 8600M GT (not overclocked). I can play on 1280x800 on DX10 w/ everything on VERY HIGH except shadow on medium and shader on low. Frame rates average 15. -
with tweaks I can run it at 720p (1280x720) resolution with medium level visuals plus a few fery high effects (HDR, god rays, and sunbeams). I had to O/C my 8600m gt to achieve results similar to the DDR3 version's performance. without tweaks I am getting around 30 FPS at all medium and 1024x768.
How will the 8600m GT 256mb DDR2 handle Crysis?
