My desktop (quite old) uses a 32 mb ati rage 128 ultra card. Just so I know what I can expect out of the current video cards in laptops, how does this compare to them (especially 128 mb nvidia geforce 8400M GS if that is possible)?
I know this is going back quite far, so any help at all is welcome.

Any modern graphics card (X3100 and up) will blow that antique (no offence!) out of the water in terms of processing power and rendering capabilities.
-
lol yeah the 8400m gs will easily be 10+ times faster than your current card. I don't have any specific numbers... just judging by the specs of the rage... not to mention support for dx10 etc.
-
In most cases, every two years you can expect 50-100% improvement over a given technology (Processor speed, GPU speed, Hard drive capacity).
So...given the age of your card, I'd say the other users are spot on. You'll be seeing several times the performance, but what exactly will you be using it for? Games? DVDs? -
yeah... I don't think it will even put up a very good fight against integrated...

lol, so the lesson is pretty much anything in the last two generations is going to be a big eye opener for you. Desktop I know I was pleasantly surprised going from my eight year old dell crap with a geforce 4 (though I did upgrade to a 7300gt later) to a top of the line home build system.
@ceenote, why does it take a whole month to get you laptop? (looking at your sig) -
-
they ship it a lot faster than their stated ETA.
-
And then when the Dell XPS1330 was released. People were waiting for that months past ETA as well! -
How would this card compare to modern?
