Which is one is the best GC buys burning question for me.

    6570m gddr5 easily beats gt 540m/gt 550m

so how fast is GT 555m against 6770m as gt 555m is 192 bit any benchies?

It's tough to say. Nobody here (AFAIK) has either card yet. It might be easier to tell next week.

EDIT: People have the XPS 17, but no one has the dv6 or dv7 yet.

128-bit GDDR5 will be faster than 192-bit GDDR3 by about 25% (when both have the same clock speeds).

Theoretically the GT555m can do GDDR5, 192bit and 144 shaders vs the 6770's GDDR5, 128bit and 480 streams (5way so like, but not comparable to 96 shaders).
In reality I'd expect a GDDR3 GT555m to be on par with GDDR5 6770 as a gut feel. Different games will perform differently between AMD and Nvidia

They are probably too close to really matter. Although I would pick the 6770 because the memory speeds in DDR3 GPUs is usually a bottleneck. In reality go with whichever computer comes out less expensive since they are pretty much equal in every other way.

They should be in a similar performance level. The HD6750m scores 11% slower than the GT 555m, and considering the HD6770 has over 10% higher clocks and much higher memory clocks, it should do the trick enough to perform on a similar level.

"Over 10% higher clocks" is an understatement. The 6770M has a 21% higher core clock than the 6750M (though, at least in the dv7, the memory clock remains unchanged).

Is it safe to say that the 6850M GDDR5 on the new Envy 17 3D is better than both of these? If so, by how much?

I've seen a couple of 3dMark 2011 tests on the DV6 with 6770M, both run today.

Here's one from forum member LuckyGuy. The other one was 4 points higher:

    And here's a 555M Dell with a faster CPU:

    Thanks, AA777.

When this link gives a Vantage score, is it the same as

"Graphics Score 5368.61" on your test?
That would put it right in the 4850/5850 class. Right between the Nvidia 280M and 285M.

I just re-read what I typed. I should have specified that I was talking about Mobility 4850 and 5850.

    Desktop 5850 does 2.1 Teraflops.
    Mobility 5850 does 0.8-1.0.
6770m does 0.7, but it is apparently pretty efficient with them. Either that or the Sandy Bridge really helps.

I found some good numbers for the 6800m series too. 6850M is about 5% faster than 6770M. Alienware with 6870M is about 1/3 faster than HP's 6770M. I'd still rather pay $810 for my DV7 than $2000 for an M17x that's 1/3 faster.

They are pretty similar, with the 4870 slightly edging out the 6770M stock. However, the 6770M has 1/3 the power consumption. :D

In fact, from what I recall, the 6770M has lower power consumption than the 540M and it gets trounced by the 6770M. Not to mention the 555M's power consumption...

Guys... If your going to bring in a comparison of the 5850 or 6870 please head to the alienware subforums. Vantage scores are nowhere close to 5k. More like 8800+. Most are in the 9000s and some in the 10k.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...-powerful-m15x-benchmark-thread-part-2-a.html

My Meager 3dmark11 scores with a weak I7-720qm are 2651. The 5850 paired with the 920xm procs score around 3100.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...werful-m15x-benchmark-thread-part-2-a-69.html

The 6770 will score much lower...

That is because the Alienware 5850M is basically a slightly downclocked 5870M. When paired with DDR5, they are basically the same chip with different clock speeds. When overclocked, they essentially become the same chip. Power consumption will be around triple that of the 6770M.

Edit ** Just checked out those links. You are comparing a ridiculously overclocked 5870 to a stock 6770M? That thing was at 1015 core, where stock it was 750. That is a 35% overclock! Now, that is impressive, but the thermals on that thing would put that near a 100 watt TDP.

Not to mention the 5850 was clocked at 915 core, which is clocked 22% higher than a stock 5870M... Again, the thermals are going to go through the roof (which is why they exist in huge computers that look like docking stations) :D

Compare them at stock... The 6770 will be slower by a margin. The one thing that the 6770 does have going for it above the 5850/5870 which nobody has mentioned is the increased handling for Tessellation. That in itself may be a benefit worth looking at.

I will not dissagree there. The 5870 and 6870 are going to be faster than the 6770M by around 25% overall. However, I believe the 6770M will easily hang with a standard clocked 5850M (625 core) with GDDR5. They will likely trade blows.

But all of this comes at a trade-off. The 6850M/5850M has a minimum TDP of 50 watts. The 6770M is right around 25. The 6770M paired with a 1366x768 screen makes for a really good gaming experience. Remember, that 1366x768 at 15.6" is within 9% DPI of a 22" 1680x1050 display. Basically, the pixel size is nearly indenticle. I don't see many people complaining about their 22" monitors... The only downside to 1366x768 in my personal opinion is desktop real estate. Gaming looks just like it does on my 22". Just some food for thought out there. I also believe that the 6770M @ 1366x768 is going to be faster than 6870M @ 1920x1080.

According to the Vantage scores, it's slightly below a DDR3 5850/6850M. It can't touch the GDDR5 version. But, really, who expected it to? If it did, AMD wouldn't have bothered rebranding the 5800 cards.

So the largely ignored keyword here is power consumption...? If AMD decides to jack up the TDP of their current line of laptop GPUs to the level of Nvidias, wouldn't the Radeons beat the Nvidias easily?

It is hard to weed through the vantage scores on futuremark's site, let alone the notebookcheck.com website. However, from what I can tell, the 5850 with DDR5 found in the Envy scores around 6500 in vantage. So basically about the same as the 6770M in vantage... I'd still give a very slight edge to the 5850M found in the Envy, but basically I'd consider it a wash.

Is that the overall score, or the GPU score? If it's overall, then it's meaningless. We need to stick to GPU scores to compare.

Also, notebookcheck's scores are very easy to look through. The GPU score for the last-gen Envy 17 3D is 5823, but the normal version gets 5851... with drivers that are a year old.

The Vantage GPU score is literally one of the most accurate tools we have, to compare relative performance at a glance.

The % of score difference almost always carries over to the gaming benchmark.

Oh yes, I agree. But it is just that a 'tool'. If you are comparing the same arch, then it can very useful. But even the case of barts versus cypress, to much had changed for the comparison to mean as much. What if ATI tweaked it to run 3Dmark vantage a little better? o_O

those vantage scores are 15% higher than my oced 5730 compared to the stock 6770 GDDR5.

And about the tesselation, every HD6 card has the same tesselation engine. In Nvidias cores as they cut down units etc, the tesselation engine gets cut too.

Memory doesn't matter much if I may take a guess, be it 192bits DDR3 or 128bits GDDR5. Sure the GDDR5 should be a bit better but I doubt the slightly lower bandwidth of the DDR3 version would be a big handicap. After all it's got 144 cores with a kinda low speed. I honestly think the 6770M looks better on paper and it has a lower consumption too, that's why you can see it in 15" notebooks while the 555M is seemingly only for 17".

What's that about the GDDR5 GT555M packing 96sps ? It doesn't make sense at all. The GT555M has 144sp, period.
3dmark06 is worthless and I'm curious about seeing the actual pics of a 15k score. You don't get that even with a stock GTX460M which should be considerably faster than even your oced Gt555M. My bs sensors are on fire until further notice.
