HP just released their refreshed line of laptops with a 8400m GS and the 8600 GS of 256, and 512 memory respectively.
What's the difference on them?

The 8400M is the entry level DX10 card, while the 8600M is the mid-range. The 8600M is a much better card for gaming. If you don't plan on gaming, the 8400M is fine, though.

No laptop received a new GPU choice, but the amount of memory was increased. But there is going to be basically no increased performance between an 8400-128 and an 8400-256 (or similarly an 8600-256 or 8600-512). There would be a great performance increase between an 8400 and an 8600 though.

I do wonder how well the 8600M GS matches up to the GT variants... Probably not very well, since it's lacking half of the raw processing power from the get-go. -
Huh. Good to know.

The 8400 is a low-end card while the 8600 being a mid-range. The 8600 is clocked much higher so meaning it has a faster processing speed than the 8400 and the extra memory means it can store more uncompressed textures thereby allowing you to play games at higher resolution with more eye candy turned on.

the the 512mb version of the 8600gs will have the same preformance of the 256mb version of the same card rite?

Huh, the 256 MB 8400m GS and 512 MB 8600 GS. Advantages?
