The 8400M is the entry level DX10 card, while the 8600M is the mid-range. The 8600M is a much better card for gaming. If you don't plan on gaming, the 8400M is fine, though.

No laptop received a new GPU choice, but the amount of memory was increased. But there is going to be basically no increased performance between an 8400-128 and an 8400-256 (or similarly an 8600-256 or 8600-512). There would be a great performance increase between an 8400 and an 8600 though.

The 8600M GS, more or less, is a super-clicked 8400M GT... It has the exact same amount of steam processors (16, as compared to 8600M GT's 32).

I do wonder how well the 8600M GS matches up to the GT variants... Probably not very well, since it's lacking half of the raw processing power from the get-go.

The 8400 is a low-end card while the 8600 being a mid-range. The 8600 is clocked much higher so meaning it has a faster processing speed than the 8400 and the extra memory means it can store more uncompressed textures thereby allowing you to play games at higher resolution with more eye candy turned on.

I would say that if you don't game or do 3D graphics things an integrated graphics wil be fine.

Yup, though I don't believe HP offers an 8400M-GT, do they? The 8600M-GS is a great deal more powerful than the 8400M-GS, due to the extra memory bandwith.
