What are the specifications of your notebook, and what kind is it?
Your X1400 has 128MB of dedicated RAM and 384MB shared via HyperMemory. However, it does not siphon off all 384MB right away - it takes memory as it needs it. 384MB is the maximum.
If the game is jerking/stuttering, then there are most likely two possibilities:
1. You don't have enough RAM.
or
2. The settings are too high (I'm not sure of the requirements for Neverwinter Nights, so even low settings might be taxing for your machine).
One thing I would suggest doing is updating your video card drivers:

It could help improve performance. -
The x1400 is a mediocre card, I know, I just sold a brand new Dell E1505 with this card because I was so disappointed with it. I tried to run NWN2 at low settings and the card just couldn't hang.
So, ended up buying an HP at bestbuy with the NVIDIA GO 7600. Runs everthing I've thrown at it, i.e. FEAR and the likes at full settings. I've searched, bought and sold 3 notebooks in the last 6 months looking for the best bang for the buck and this HP DV9035NR is IT. $1349.00 !!!
