It's actually a really short game.
But it's really good.
Really good. -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Made it past stage 11. **** gotta go to class! LOl very fun but i'm just getting out the tutorial stages.
-
so the PC version is out too, right?
-
yes
unlocked via steam at 3 AM this morning.
The first 10-12 levels are actually pretty easy..
15-19 is where it gets fun. -
I can't wait until the mods start rolling out.
-
The talking sentry guns are a bit disturbing...
And the computer lady was freaking me out several times during the game.
Too short.
But I REALLY liked it.
But way too short. -

Well the original game was short too called narbacular drop, it was only 5 levels. However the reason that game was so great is there were nearly 100 player made levels that were much harder than the normal ones. Also one Key thing that you could do in narbackular drop you cant do in portal and this really sucks because it removes alot of possbilities from the game is. shoot a portal thru a portal.
However I pray to god they let us make player maps for portal then the game will never end, and will be one of the greatest games of alll time if you ask me. If its forced with only what they gave us tho I feel kinda cheated out of my money. I am going to work on achievments tonight and see if I can get them all. -
Sounds like fun. Can't wait to play. But yes, multiplayer would be a blast.

I already have ideas for multi that would require i think very little modification for the game.
Deathmatch: Rather than add guns to the game and just being able to use a portal gun wich was my first idea. I think it should remain only portal gun but you have to use your enviroment to kill you foe.
Take a stage for instance that is just a platform floating in lava. Then your encased with 4 walls and a ceiling. To win you would try to portal your oponent into the lava.
Another way to kill somebody would be with the addition of the plasma balls, the turrets ect. Or a very creative way would be with a block. Take a portal on the ceiling somewhere then put one directly below it. The block will go into an infinity loop and build up so much speed, then when you put a portal on the wall somewhere it would launch at terminal velocity and kill anything it hits.
next would be a competition mode, you just all start on a stage and who ever gets to the end first is the winner.
Last would be a hybrid between the two, you have to get to the end but there are a crazy amount of obsticals in the way so its more challenging to stay alive than to make it to the end, and who makes it there first or who makes it the furthest before dying wins. -

This game will be my #1 game ever if they can incorporate some of those multiplayer functions i just mentioned, and if they let us make man made maps to extend the game. The stock ones make it too short and once you beat it the game has no purpose, but man made maps mean this game goes on for infinity and the difficulty is all up to the maker.
I made maps for the prequal to this game narbaclular drop and the man made maps are crazy! with alot of high speed flying across the stage and crazy stunts.
Everybody google Narbacular Drop and play it when you get around to it, its the game made before this one and the same team that made portal. The game is short like 5 levels but there are about 50 man made levels thats where the fun is at. I recomend using XP to run it because it has programs to autoload the custom maps, if you use vista you have to load them manually with the console. it wont run at all on vista x64 for me. -

I also beat portal. I will have review up tomorrow.

I LOVE THIS GAME! I just beat it. I could've beat it last night but I was tired. So um... does anyone want Cake? I brought my friend the companion cube along if anyone wants to join us.
I havn't even loaded up EP2 yet. If it's even as half as good as portal was it'll be a great game. I had been waiting to paly Portal ever since I saw the teaser videos. Even more so than EP2. -

I'm almost done with the game but the poor performance it runs at on my comp is driving me insane. So I'm just curious if anyone else has noticed this game running much more poorly (bout 20-30fps) versus Half Life 2 (55-70 fps)with slightly lower graphics settings and even worse on the exact same settings? This doesn't make any sense to me because there is much more going on in HL2 during firefights yet it runs twice as fast.

Try updating to 163.75 drivers.

yeah, it's runs fine if you're not looking at a portal. however, if you have a portal open and you look through it, it basically has to run 2 instances of the world, as opposed to 1...so it takes a little more power

runs great for me but I dont max the resolution 1300x700ish on my 37" screen with my desktop and 1280x800 for my notebook with all graphic options max except only 4x AA runs like a dream.
The game was easy but I started the challenges some today just for abit and its CRAZY hard. Like the first stage limited portal challenge. Says beat it with 9 or less portals. Well I did that but you notice after you beat it that you only get a "bronze" reward and then it shows you the real goal of 5 portals. Well it took me a good bit of brain scraping to figure out how to beat it in 5 portals but I did... then it showed me the REAL goal of only 4 portals to get gold. That I have not figured out yet and its only the first challenge! The you have limted time and limited steps challenges! Its going to be crazy to get all the achievments but I am going to try.
The advanced levels I only played the first one, it was not too hard but alot of fun, but I am sure the later ones are much harder. -
This is the first game that has actually made me thing. I love the way you have to observe EVERYTHING and see how things in your environment interact together. Valve did a great job with this game and like Visicious stated in the above post there are so many different challenges it would take you forever just to finish to the game!
You remember when I said goodbye and you was all like "NO WAY."
That is by far my favorite quote from the game. -
-"Don't believe me? Here, I'll put you on: "Helllooo!", that's you, that's how dumb you sound."
-"Maybe you should marry that thing since you love it so much. Do you want to marry it? Well I won't let you. How does that feel?"
I love GLaDOS.I love the ending song (<--click for MP3) too, written by the always aamazing Jonathan Coulton.
Played through the game again and listened to all the commentary - one of them explains how they did GLaDOS' voice. it's amazing how well Ellen McLane (who is also the TF2 announcer, and shows up in Episode 2 as well) can do Glados' voice even without the added computer modulation.
Portal = Heaven. I can't wait for user-created maps to start coming out. -

Yes the user maps will be the best. I want to recreate the narbacular drop maps for a good start to get used the map program.
I hope there is a way to enable shooting a portal thru a portal like in narbacular drop too, some kind of flag you can toggle on I hope. It will had 5000x more possbilities for maps.
for instance in narbacular drop there is a hallway with no platform full of lava, to get thru shoot a portal to the corner, then shoot a portal next to you, look thru your portal then shoot another portal thru that portal and then you have one at the end of the hallway (a hallway bent like an "L" is should have said) there is no way to do this in portal. -
I'm sure there's a way but I doubt it's as simple as clicking a button. From my work with the HL1 engine it seemed to be very open and allow the creator to get really creative without any hinderances. I don't know if the HL2 SDK is so open though.

Just beat it! Great game, but I crave mooore...

more you say? try your hand at the bonus/chalenge stages for the real portal masters and try to unlock all of the achievments.
I just got on like an hour and 30 min ago to play and I have beat advanced challenge 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17. Only one left is 18.
They are hard but the other ones are harder where you can get a bronze, silver or gold reward based on time, steps, and portal use. Took me over an hour to get the gold for the first stage for using only 4 portals to beat it. I tried the steps one and 30 steps for the bronze I cant even do without pulling my hair out. I am scared to know what gold is.... I dont know if even I can beat those challenges.
edit I beat all of the advanced stages! who wants some of my Vanilla Crazy Cake??
