I got Doom 3 expecting a scary shooter; but instead I get a good shooter with good graphics but it's not scary ( at least on the first few levels). Can someone please confirm that it will in fact get scarier as I progress on in the game?

Not really. Doom 3 was more of a suspense type game to me because you always know monsters will be spawning behind you and sneaking up. Doom 3 doesn't really change as you progress in the level IMO, it is the same type of stuff.

Also, FYI, I think the expansion to Doom 3 was more fun than the original. You can usually find it online for $10 or so. Worth it if you like Doom 3.

You should have gotten F.E.A.R. instead. Better graphics, better gameplay, and is actually kinda scary.

I didn't think FEAR was really that scary either. There was on point in the expansion pack that was super creepy though. :p

I kind of see them as two different games anyway. They are both fun for different reasons.

    LOL, very true! :)

I know it's not a PC game, but Resident Evil 4 for the Gamecube or Wii (or even PS2 is that matter) scared the crap out of me.

playing resident evil 4 or doom 3 with a good headset... add a lot of suspense to the games.

I think this highly depends on the person playing... Some people will say that Doom 3 is scary and others that it's not just depending on how easily scared a person is.
It's a suspense type game, and if you get scared from suspense (monsters jumping out of nowhere and that kind of stuff), then you'll find Doom 3 scary. If that doesn't scare you then the game simply won't scare you.
It's just like some people get scared watching a suspense movie and others don't. It all depends if that kind of thing scares you, and by the looks of it it doesn't. So I really doubt you'll find Doom 3 scary (it doesn't get any worse later on in the game).

FEAR was a little startling at the beginning, but after the 2nd level, its just the same old same old, great game though.

You need a big monitor that takes up most of your vision, a dark room, and a good surround system with alot of bass to get the most out of games like that. Playing it on a notebook is not going to give even close to the same experience.

Good headphones are good too, they give good sound stage but they dont rattle you like real sub woofers do, the sound card is important, the 3dcmss mode with an xfi card is the best.

I wouldn't want to get FEAR if it's described as "gross". Someone would really make a lot of money by putting a polished "House of the Dead" on PC!

So anyways, I've got an Asus G2S A1 with a GDDR3 8600 (See sig). I've stuck to autodetect for now (800 x 600 and high quality), but if I wanted to raise the settings and resolution, what do you guys think would be good settings? Thanks!

Yep, that's what I do too. Runs real smooth.

I found Doom 3 more about the cheap 'things jumping out at you' than suspense. That sort of stuff makes me jump, but is also the reason I haven't yet bothered to finish it - I kinda don't like that. F.E.A.R. has more suspense in there, especially the expansion (which I'm playing through now), and there has been a lot less fun in the part of Doom 3 I have played up until than in F.E.A.R. It was actually the benchmark game I wanted a new laptop in order to play, and F.E.A.R. was just a late addition to my purchases. And Doom 3 is technically brilliant, even now.

actually the ravenholm level in HL2 is far more scary than both games doom3 and f.e.a.r, simply you're thrown into a dead town infested with zombies and you just have to make it, the only company you get is that insane creepy priest, it just doesn't get worse than that, that level was one of the main reasons taht made HL2 the classic game that it's today.

Yeah the black spider crabs made me jump out of my seat. Bad to get infected when all you see around you are zombies.

I believe that F.E.A.R. was much better and was probably the most creepiest game i have played. And about resident evil 4, there is a PC version that came out earlier this year.

There's a thread on this forum about Clive Barker's Undying. Alot of people say it's scary. You could try it.

Btw: Don't give up on Doom 3. It's not really scary but it has some freaky moments. There's one that happens in a hallway *I won't give details because I don't want to spoil it* also I found the Hell levels freaky. When you play Doom 3, get you some noise cancelling headphones. Wait until it's dark out. Turn all the lights off and start up the game.

I run Quake 4, which is the same game as far as video cards go, at native 1280X800, high settings, and pull down around 30-60fps with the rig in my sig.

Almost forgot, I'm running this with Vsync and 4xAA. I had to setup my own autoexec.cfg to get this to load at startup but you can change these in game as well via the console.

^ Yeah I just edited mine yesterday to run at a higher resolution.

Go to your Doom 3 directory/base/doomconfig.cfg and open it in notepad.

Then look for these values, "seta r_customheight", "seta r_customwidth", "seta r_mode" (these 3 are all together), and "seta r_aspectRatio" (this is 3 values from the bottom).

For me, I wanted to run at 1680x1050 so I set the customheight/width values accordingly. Make sure that "seta r_mode" is set to "-1"; this is what allows a custom resolution to be used. Last but not least "seta r_aspectratio" uses values 0, 1, or 2. 0 is for 4:3 mode, 1 is for 16:9 mode, and 2 is for 16:10 mode.

So for me, my values look like this:
    seta r_cutomHeight "1050"
    seta r_customWidth "1680"
    seta r_mode "-1"
    seta r_aspectRatio "2"

The scariest game i've played is called Condemned: Criminal Origins.
It's from the same guys who did FEAR, but it's much scarier, imo.

try it, great graphics and it should only be like $15.
