Have you considered the Hitman series? I've played Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, and it looked good. Although I must add that I did not play it for long.

Try the Warcraft 3 mod DotA. (Defense of the Ancients) I'm not a fan of Warcraft 3 but this mod is awesome.

It's highly competitive and fairly easy to pick up and play.

An not much old (2003) yet very good game is FreeLancer. It was nominated as the best game at E3-1999.
(And since it has a very .ini based structure, there are many mod's available for it.Discovery mod. was chosen as the best mod by ModDB - I'm using it right now, a very good one)

I highly recommend these--a lot of them have lasting value, and some I haven't even finished yet. Except for Advent Rising, these have gotten the highest of reviews. For the "LIGHT" games, the difficulty is less or game length shorter but the story/presentation more than makes up for it. Some of the "INVOLVED" ones like Neverwinter Nights may have less fascinating story but lots of challenging or varied gameplay.

    LIGHT
*Beyond Good & Evil (compared to Zelda Windwaker)
    *Fable: The Lost Chapters
    Jade Empire Special Edition
    Psychonauts (platformer)
*Prince of Persia (I. Sands of Time, II. Warrior Within, III. Two Thrones)
Advent Rising (OK action kind of like Jedi Knight)

    INVOLVED
    *Thief 3 Deadly Shadows
*Deus Ex: Invisible War (FPS SciFi action RPG)
*Arx Fatalis (FPS fantasy action RPG)
Dark Messiah (FPS fantasy action RPG)
*Neverwinter Nights I (haven't tried II yet)

    * = MUST play

If you just want to go ahead and throw your social life in the toilet, there's always World of Warcraft.

If not, may I suggest Medieval 2: Total War. Amazing game.

I know a perfect game: go outside and take a soccerball with you or go outside and take a stick and a smaller ball with you. These really are great games! =P

No, to be serious, The game is quite old but I think it's an awesome game, and since you said you wouldn't discriminate i'll name it: I really think Settlers 4 is a very very good game. I hope you will find a good game.

I LOVED Dues Ex and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Not the world's biggest fan of FEAR but can't wait for STALKER (and I'm praying it isn't a let down).

What about playing some of your existing games in multiplayer format...that always livens things up a bit...

One amazing game that I have been playing for a while is American McGee's Alice. It's a... "twisted" version of Alice in Wonderland. It's older than 2000, and I think it uses DirectX 7. Nonetheless, it is a very good game and will keep you drawn in for a while. I started over the summer of 2005, took a break because of school, and on the first day of summer 2006 I resumed from where I left. Look it up on Google.

    PS
You can get it packaged with Clive Barker's Undying (also old), which I have heard is one of the scariest and best FPSs ever made for the computer.

    PPS
Whoops, Undying is actually from 2001. Not sure when Alice is from. Either way, do not expect top-notch graphics. Another game which has served me well is Freedom Fighters. Only single player, but a fun one.

    UFO: Afterlight.

Awesome game. I've been addicted to it for the last two weeks. Everyone I've shown it to are now addicted to it as well, even the ones who don't usually play this kind of game.

If you ever played the old X-Com games, you'll know the genre. Afterlight is somewhat different (which basically means it's more than just a clone), but still not hard to see where they got their inspiration from.

Oh, and it's the third in a series. The two first games (UFO: Aftermath and Aftershock both sucked.)
