I bought the game of the year edition on Steam and i have been trying to like it but after i got out from the vault it seemed so boring. Now am just rushing through the story to finnish it fast as possible and am forcing myself to do this.
Now i am at lvl 8 i think and just got to the second big city (the ship), but i cant force myself to like it anymore its just so incedebly boring and the story is so boring that am lazy to read the conversations i just want it to end. Its kinda like playing a free korean mmorpg with no other players.
Did anyone elese have this feeling about Fallout 3?
-
-
LOL, that's the same experience I had with it. I really wanted to like it, I loved the visuals and the beginning storyline but after that I straight off lost interest.
-
Exactly, like a mmorpg without people. I had the same impression about oblivion as well.
-
The intro segment was so damn painful, by the time I got out of the vault, my opinion of the game was completely soured. I got to the first town, saved, then uninstalled the game.
I almost turned it off during the birthday scene. -
glad to hear its not only me
I regret that i bought it so much now, 50 friggin Euros! I could have gotten BC2 or something
best birthday party ever
-
At first I didn't like it also but then it grew on me. I ended up beating it but could not get back into it for a second time.
-
yeah, it wasn't that great. I did like how they developed your character in the beginning, that was great. But once you got out it was just stale. You go into buildings and shoot things, for what? Nothing really. Very little reward. Then it was annoying running the storyline from there on out. I never finished it either.
Oblivion was better IMHO, and even though Bioshock wasn't a truly open environment it was much better. -
I thought it was a great game personally. Found the story compelling and fun. You have to expect bleak surroundings considering the context of the game.

It's all a matter of style of course. I find Starcraft I and II to be boring beyond measure. The graphical style from the Final Fantasy series make me want to kill children.
Fallout 3 for me was all about atmosphere. I enjoy post-apoc fiction and movies and found the game to be an entertaining simulation of it. -
What I loved about Fallout 3 was that you couldn't just go anywhere without risking getting killed by the AI. As I started to level up it got easier but the further away I got I had to choose my fights carefully.
-
It's definitely a game that grows on you the more you play it. You do have to go into it with the right mindset - have a character type you want to create, go explore, find cool stuff. It takes effort to enjoy it.
Which is a serious flaw. You shouldn't have to work at a game to start getting enjoyment.
But it is still enjoyable once your character is built. -
I don't play it much, but I still like it. The story's crap and only went as far as unlocking the power armor. After that I just go out and explore and soak in the little quirky quest stories like the cannibal families. That's the fun part about the game for me.

Hence the moniker, " Oblivion with Guns ". While Fallout's 1 and 2 are typically rated in the top 20 pc games of all times, Bethesda tried to capitalize on the franchise and just didn't get it. Hopefully FO:New Vegas will have what was missing in FO3, since some of the people who created 1 and 2 are in on it !
Personally, I'm sick of all the " This game is a first person, rpg , strategy , adventure game !"
Stick to one genre and make it good ! -

It's a good game, but you can't rush through it. You have to take your time, experience the random encounters and fights. Some of the side quests are pretty dull, but there's plenty to do. Explore Grayditch if you haven't yet, and do the quest there. Also, the main quest gets a bit more interesting after you get to Rivet City, but I won't spoil it for you.
And be glad that you didn't buy BC2, it's one of the worst console ports I've ever seen. -

you can try installing fallout wanderers edition mod. makes the game much more "realistic" not to mention much harder. lots of changes that there is too many to list. you can look at the changes and download it here

strange, i liked fallout 3 and finished the game quite easily. The part where you go into the simulated neighborhood was some of the most creative, interesting and eerie parts of any game ive ever played. but i had a real problem getting into oblivion 4. i stopped after about 2-3 hours of it.

I didn't dislike the game initially and one weekend I actually put about 10 hours into it but the slow-mo targeting system got on my nerves and without it targeting was soo bad I couldn't kill anything, also hearing the same radio messages every 20 minutes killed me.
I love good sci-fi (children of men, the road, serenity) and thought I was getting a sci-fi version of Oblivion. I put it away after that first weekend and later found Borderlands which was better in almost every respect. I did love oblivion though and I have owned 3 copies, for the xbox360 when it was first released, a computer copy I bought for $5 off this forum a year or two ago, and the complete edition off of steam a couple of weeks ago. -

Played it, liked it first time through the game but beat it wayyyy too fast. The actual story missions are rather short.
Venture away from the main plot and explore side quests and its a pretty big game, so started a new game, went with a character build I liked better than the first one and started to go to every area and do every side quest.
It was fun at first due to my new character build but the further I got the more every area looked the same, all the enemies seemed the same, and the game quickly just got so plain, bland, boring and repetitive and I couldnt beat the game the 2nd time through because it just became plain annoying for me to play it. -
What an MMPORG they would have been though!
-
All open RPGs feel like single player MMORPGs to me IMO, that's why never liked games like GTA, it's for developers too lazy to craft the storyboard and the experience, and just spatter everything into the game and give it a novel name like "open" rpg.
-
GTA is far from boring. Unlike fallout 3, theres a lot of people and cars in the city making it so full of life, there are indications for each mission (where to start it, what exactly you have to do, then where u gotta go, etc), while on fallout 3 it just gives u a big world and thats it, you gotta go explore it. I got into some kind of destructed school where I got pwned and quit.

Quick help: go to Megaton, it's a city pretty close to the Vault's exit, and get some quests, and start exploring the surroundings (without wandering too far away, obviously). -
I remember that was my problem when I first played it.
When you come out of the vault you can turn left into the school of pain or right to go straight to the town of megaton and equip yourself up with the goods!
It would be helpful with a sign that says left mortal peril.
GO RIGHT! -
The only real problem I have with Fallout 3 is the feeling of being completely alone and then going from one civilization to the next. It feels unnecessary and quickly becomes repetitive. Other than that I feel it's a great game. Decent story, memorable characters, the sheer size of it, the karma system, the choices you make having consequences, and being optimized well for the PC.
For someone new to the game; I would have to say that the game can be overwhelming when you first start. I didn't enjoy the game for some time. I was always confused and had no idea what was going on. Give it some time and see your experience changes. After playing it for some time I eventually got sucked into the game and became addicted to it. -
GTA4 is way better, am playing it now and have played it for 26 hours. I didnt get bored of it because it has cool cutscenes and stuff unlike fallout 3
-
In fact , the Sabetour was quite good.. had a long story and quite a few side missions.. played 20 hours+ of it easily...

Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
Agree with OP. I bought this for $25 from a Steam sale and played maybe 4 hours before I gave up. If the combat was better I probably would have stuck with it, but it was horrible. I guess I was expecting a FPS with RPG but it is the exact opposite. And the shooter part is craptastic.

I loved it fromt he moment I popped it out of the packaging. I knew what I was getting into after putting in hundreds of hours into oblivion. This is not a casual game for sure, one that can be picked up pop on for an hour then walk away, its a layered game that takes time to build.
For both Oblivion and Fallout 3, the beginning takes to long, for both I understand its part of the character building process and building a bit of backstory but they could have gone about doing it a bit differently. Both are meant to be bleak and boring, then once you get released into the bigger world, its meant to shock you how awesome it looks.
They story for Fallout 3 is def lacking, but all the side stories and events picks up the slack, and the dlc is way above par for any other game putting out dlc content, dling them is like buying a brand new game for it.
Its meant to feel lonely as some of you address, your first hand witness to what happens when nukes destroy a country, do you think it would be a world beeming with life every were, or an empty wasteland were scavangers are out to kill you. I feel both games are trying to get that the gameplay is the story, that all your little adventures are unscripted story so no matter how many times you play they way you approach a mission carry it out is like creating a small unique story that no one else can replicate.
Gameplay wise I find V.A.T system super cheap. Level up bullet weapons first and the rest of the game is easy.... no matter what setting. Then critical hit perk and headshot perk and you unstoppable. After my first play through ignoring V.A.T system for the most part I started using it and the handicap drops severly. So if you want a challenge play without VAT. But this was included because of the previous 2 games being tectical
I hate having to repair something, and for both games (oblivion) this is incredibley annoying, its more difficult yes but slows down story progression because everytime a gun breaks your heading back to town to fix it. I find by the end of the game I always have 1 of every gun on my at all times.... just in case. But the exploration and secrets and ambience is amazing, def worth the game of the year its gotten; -

Like already said, Fallout 3 is a good game. The most shining part is the atmosphere, to fell like you're the character and go wander around. Slowly (the breaker for most people, it seems) it will get more interesting with the diversity of sci-fi themes.
For me what I liked was exploring new localitions (especially 'towns') and looking for bits of stories of what happened (or is happening) there. Overall the story is 'ok' with some shining points (like 'virtual land' or the massive final fight).
My 2 cents. -
I hated Fallout 3. I find the gameplay too weird and boring right after I left the vault. I kept thinking that it's "suppose" to be a good game so I forced myself to play a bit more, but couldn't take the it any more and uninstalled 10 minutes later.
I did finish and enjoyed Oblivion a lot though... -
I have to agree with the op, it can be very boring sometime, especially at the beginning of the game, during the learning curve.
I dont understand whats good or fun about Fallout 3!
