to run current and upcoming games without serious issue on a laptop. Am I wasting my time, should I just get a desktop? I really like the portability of a laptop and they're just more fun to use.

    Intel Core Duo T7700 2.4 ghz; FSB800; 4MB L2
    17inch Widescreen WXGA 1440x900
    512mb DDR3 nvidia Geforce Go 8800M GTX
    2gb ram dd2-800mhz pc2-6400
    120gb 7200 HD
Vista/XP (depending on which would be better to use)

With this setup will I be ok, or will I always be choppy and lagging behind desktop counterparts? It makes me sad. I don't want to make the mistake of buying this laptop and regretting it. I also don't want to give in to a desktop if this setup would run rather well.

It won't equal desktop performance but, it will play pretty much any game.
    Where are you buying?

That will be able to run pretty much any games with anti aliasing at the highest settings! You can use XP to get better FPS, but Vista supports Direct X10 so I'm not sure. If you're going to be using this laptop for more than 4+ years I suggest you get Vista.

it really depends on what games your playing...but still, the laptop specs are quite impressive, but if you really want amazing gaming performance for the newest games and most demanding ones, i would have to say SLI, and another 2gb of ram would be nice, some people rave about the x7900 cpu as it is unlocked, but is very expensive, so thats optional, but you can overclock.
basic rule of thumb though, a desktop of the same price will generally smoke a laptop in terms of performance, at least thats my opinion.
in short, those specs are very good, but if you want the best portable gaming experience i would have to recommend sli...4gb of ram total as well, this setup should run most games quite smoothly, but does depend on which games your playing also. but again, a desktop will offer better performance probably for less money, but you cant really justly compare the performance of a desktop with a laptop.

That is my main problem then I guess, wanting the best but not being able to afford it. An 8800m SLI and 4 gigs total would tack on another thousand or so which I wasn't ready to pay. To answer Thomas this setup was from eurocom.

    Thanks for replying everyone

Hi Thomas, it would be slightly over 2100 USD. I was trying to keep it around 2000.

despite no sli, the specs are still very good.
you can always upgrade the ram when your good and ready.
personally if your budget is 2000, i wouldnt wait around for the alienware...but thats my personaly thought.

anyway, i hope i helped, i think with the clevos and such you can just add another graphics card later and go sli, when you need it and the prices fall a bit.

I hadn't heard of those two, they look huge! I see multiple HD's (2-3) and such. I think the m17 would be required as its the 17inch screen. Generally I found that Alienware and others like the blackhawks are more expensive than what eurocom offered. Also the tag line for the m's is "introducing the most powerful notebooks ever created" which scares me off (price!).

Yes thank you for your help Niqui and everyone else

    Keep dreaming.

When people on a thread say 'Man that beast will run any game at highest settings!!OMGWTFBBQ!!111!!" Be afraid, be very afraid. They aren't talking about resolution (which to me is > shadows or other effects). There will always be some issue you will have to deal with. From games being shoddily coded so that no matter what hardware you have they still wont run right. To video card new driver whoes.

Nothing is perfect and nothing good is easy.

The laptop is by far the most pleasant choice : portability, a sort of UPS, stylish, does not need a lot of space, and your particular choice is pretty impressive.
I`d wait until sager releases the 8800M GTX for the 5791 and 9261 and then check places like XoticPc or Powernotebooks for those laptops,at far better prices... :) (~2000 $ )
