This is going to make me sound like the wimpiest gamer ever but I was just curious....does anyone else suffer from motion sickness (Nausea)after playing first person perspective games like Oblivion or Crysis for awhile? After I play either of these games for more than an hour or so (especially if I'm running) I will get so nauseous I literally have to stop before I barf LOL! The worse thing about it is the feeling actually lasts for like an hour after I stop playing! It's so wierd because I dont ever get carsick, amusement park rides dont bother me at all, never get air or seasick...just Game-Sick LOL....anyone else experience this?

yeah its common.. usually is from games where the field of view is too small? or narrow i guess?
I know in call of duty 4 you can adjst the FOV but im not sure about those other games.
To adjust the FOV in cod4, open up the console and type /cg_fov 80 I think default is like 65 or sumthing extremely low...
maybe you can research game specific forums and see if theres any fixes/tweaks for them... -
I guess you shouldn't play Portal then.

seriously though, you push forward past the nausea, once you become hardcore gamer, you will feel the sickness no more.
-
im usually okay. half-life 2 was the worst for me...that one made me really dizzy and sick.
-
Try changing lighting or turning off the TV if it's nearby? Anything bright that'll distract your eyes I guess.

I still get that tingly feeling when I jump off a huge roof in a CS:S custom map. :O

May sound like an overreaction on my part mate, but have you maybe seen a doctor about this?
I've never heard of anyone getting motion sick from playing a computer game before? Maybe it might be an idea to do a little research, maybe have a chat with a doc to be on the safe side? (Now I sound like a tool don't i?!). -
It's quite common. but have a talk with your doc just in case. Usually, you'll get used to it(not the throwing up) and you won't feel nauseous anymore. Just like getting used to car sickness.
Thankfully, I'm blessed not to have that problem -

I get carsick whenever I read in the car, but I've found that SeaBands help me to the point where I don't feel sick anymore. It may be entirely placebo, but it might work for you too
-
If I play Halo (PC) or Stalker I'll hurl. Dunno why only those two.
-
Stalker has incredibly jerky first person views when walking and running.
-
I have agree your not only one that get ill play games so i just stoped played them :>
-
if i got sick while playing games, i'd have to take my own life.... i just wouldn't be able to go on.
-
Haha you are not alone
30 minutes of FPS is enough to make me stop playing
1 hour is enough to cripple me for the whole day
2 hours+ will certainly make me barf and cripple me for few days ahead
But its not all FPS .... i got nothing from gears of war, a little from cod 4 and bioshock and heavy nausea from FEAR -

Your getting motion sickness from a notebook LCD? It is common for some people to get nausea from gaming, but it mostly occurs on displays that either display ghosting, which shouldn't happen with a gaming notebook like yours. Or the screen is too large, and is covering too much of your field of view.
I also get motion sickness, but only when I play games like STALKER, or especially GRID, and only when playing on the 50" LCD screen, sitting a few feet further away usually helps me. See if this helps you as well. Try sitting back an extra foot or so if possible. If gaming on a large HDTV, sit several extra feet back. -
I get nauseous as well when playing FPSs. Always on consoles when I hang out with friends, but I think it's the split screen. Also HL2 and source mods like Insurgency and Zombie Panic. Other shooters I can go on for hours without any ill effect.

I've been playing FPSes for a while now and there are still ones that make me sick every time I boot 'em up. Half-Life 2 is pretty bad, anything Wolfenstein makes me ill. I get that "nausea hangover" the OP mentioned, too, if I push too hard. I know there are a couple other shooters that have gotten me.
I don't know, maybe some people can power through motion sickness, but I sure as hell can't. My dad's driving in his Acura is intolerable, I can't take it for more than an hour. I don't mind visiting my grandmother when I'm home from school for the holidays, but I sure as hell mind the drive with him at the wheel. -
There is a reason why some games still put up the epilepsy warnings about playing in well-lit games and the like, following the same advice might help combat nausea.
That or the OP is stuck to short gaming bursts until the mind and body give up. -
I know it's great to have the option to play for however long you want open to you, but it's really not all it's cracked up to be. I have a hard time getting work done since I can game for a whole day without getting sick. (breaks to eat and deposit waste, of course)

This is an interesting topic I usually feel abit ill when i played halflife 2 and stalker for some reason so i stopped play both used to feel slightly nauseated. I think the best thing to do is sit in a well lighted area, window open so your getting some fresh air make sure your not sitting too close to the screen so you don't strain your eyes and take breaks at regular intervals i.e once every hour for 15 mins, this help reduce eye strain and gets your eyes back into focus.

my fat glasses got inbuilt protection against Nausea

My girlfriend gets really sick trying to play Half-Life 1, she seems fine with anything else though. Even some gamers on the PC Gamer editorial staff get gaming nausea sometimes, that should set your mind at ease a little, the condition is EXTREMELY common.
There are a few causes, but the biggest is due to your brain having trouble trying to reconcile the movement you see inside the game with your position in space (sitting in a chair). It is the same cause of car sickness and sea sickness, you've got to keep your eye on the horizon so your brain can see why you are moving.
I'm pretty sure we can find a solution, here are a few tips:
1. You might need glasses if you don't have them already, see an optometrist and see if you need a prescription.
2. Game in a well lit room. Ideally you want a lamp right above your monitor shining light downwards like a curtain in front of the monitor (not directly on the monitor, or you'll get glare). This is actually an eye-strain fix, but I've heard it helps with gaming sickness.
3. Sit farther back from your computer screen, far enough back that you have a 3 foot buffer around the screen with your peripheral vision above, below, and to both sides. Farther is better, so I'd recommend trying it many feet back (stretch that keyboard and mouse, use a tv tray or something) to see if it works at all. Then work your way forward until the nausea starts coming back, then the next day try pulling back a few inches, just like overclocking!
4. Get up every 30 minutes and walk around for 2 or 3 minutes and then lay down and close your eyes for 2 or 3 minutes.
5. Try chewing ginger or ginger gum (or drinking ginger ale), if none of the other stuff works, this will definitely help you get through your FPS gaming session. The only trouble with this solution is it requires a constant supply of ginger, though it always seems to work.
6. Try changing the field of view (fov) in your game, often times the angle is what is making you sick, try widening it or changing the position (you'll need to check individual game forums to find ways to do this, usually involves a console command or .inf file edit).
7. Remember, most of these tips will not help you feel better if you are already nauseated (except the ginger, that stuff never fails). Implement a solution at the start of your gaming session to see if it helps, if you get sick, don't start trying other stuff till the next day, because you wont know if it works or not unless you start from a non-nauseated state. Ideally, you can mix and match solutions for greatest effect.
Good luck everyone, one of these things should help you! -
wow, i knew that some people get sick when gaming, but i didn't know it was this common. i guess i'm lucky then, i never have such problems.
-
the only game ever to make me feel sick was the original doom when it first came out all those years ago. it affected my friend a lot worse than it affected me. now upto the present day and im a gamer. finished loads of games like cod4, tom clancy vegas 2,crysis etc and none of them had affected me at all but as soon as my friend came round cod4 and crysis affected him within 5 minutes and he felt sick.
it does freak out my eyes a bit as im blind in my left but that is always the one that starts getting sore and weeping. still doesnt stop me from gaming for 4-5 hours at a time.
computer screens affect everyone differently and officially you are meant to have a break every hour but how many gamers actually heed that warning?
not many i bet. -
For real, i have been gaming all kinds of games since i was 8 and from i was 13 to 16 i played 8-12 hours a day (i had no life) But i never got this Nausea stuff. I must be immune. I however used to get car sick when i was younger
-
I only got that from Descent. It was extremely disorientating.

These are some great suggestions...thanks! I have to find me a long DVI to HDMI cable and hook my Sager up to the big LCD...and see if that makes a difference...
-
I've only ever felt nauseous when it's been a long time since playing any game. Eventually my brain rewires itself though
-
good choice, i have a 40" samsung series 6 too!
i only get nauseous if the game is jerky or requires a lot of constant swinging around. but mainly jerkiness causes it for me -

I only get so called gaming sickness when I play for too long, while only looking at the screen. If I look around the room frequently while I play I am fine.

I have sever motion sickness and FPS's just kill me. I can play for like an hour tops and then its off to lay down while my world re-aligns
I can take Dramimine or sea sick patches to help... but getting borderline high to play games is a bit much, so i just stopped playing them for the most part.
I like RTS and RPG's better anyways so its ok in my mind -

yea but 6 series is the best bang for your buck i reckon.
i also get nauseous if i have to scroll down hunting for stuff...like on a really really long poorly organised webpage -
Oh yeah, I forgot that one part, the one time I got sick using a computer while gaming was when the screen refresh rate was screwed up. Try changing out monitor cables or inputs, I had a serious issue with a fault VGA cable that made the screen shimmer, making me ill without realizing it. A DVI cable completely got rid of the shimmer, and I felt fine. Try different cables and inputs for sure.

halo 1 and 2 made feel nauseaed. i had to lay down for 15mins with my eyes shut to calm my neuro pathways down.

I got nauseous while playing the canal part of Half Life 2 (which I understand occurs to quite a few people). I know one girl who gets nauseous at any FPS except for CS. I have no idea why, although she still sucks at CS unless she sprays and prays.

Not to thread steal or anything, but I'm curious as well and this seems like a good topic to ask in.
I play CSS competitively and for fun for many hours at a time (4-6) and sometimes (Hasn't happened recently anymore now that I think about it) I would get a bloody nose in the middle of no where. I thought it was just me, but two of my buddies that play with me that I went to highschool with also got this. Is this a common issue? Like I said i haven't gotten it anymore, like a year or so, but I used to get them like every week. I would be in the middle of playing and thought my nose was running so I would wipe it with a tissue while trying not to get killed, and looked down to see blood. -

Was it in the winter where the heat is always blasting and your air passages dry up? I get bloody noses in the winter time if Im in a dry environment with artificial heat blasting....this could be the cause. I've never heard of gaming-induced nosebleeds...

Motion sickness can be caused by a disassociation between your intended movement and the perceived response. From this, playing FPS can give you motion sickness by a number of ways. For one, FPS tries to simulate what your movements should be based on the keys you press. However, if you get into frustrating situations (e.g. Half-life 2, trying to swim or navigating difficult terrain) can really bring terrible motion sickness (i.e. you think you can move there but are actually blocked by something). Secondly, occluded field of vision can cause it as well.
Generally, anything that pulls you out of the in-game 'role' for long periods of time will cause motion sickness! -
Im such a wimp...
Been playing call of duty for roughly 2 hours
The excitement was kinda keeping the vomit down until i couldnt take it anymore then i stopped playing.
Now i feel like crap lulz
