I have not kept up in nvidia's graphics drivers for laptop's in a while. My friend's g50vt is running really hot. I think I put 256.xx on it. I don't really care what driver as long as is runs cooler.
You guys know any off the top of your head?

I run the latest whatever came after 260.99 and I cant say it has ever run any cooler. If its running hot what it needs is a nice clean out maybe a repaste. Myne was aboiut 1.5 years in on my paste, by mouth blow out dropped 5C and a clean out lowered it another 10C.

And on top of the cleaning, you can undervolt the GPU, that should drop the temp a bit (more than a driver change at least).

I did find this thread.
I'm going to try the latest first, then what he has found to work. The thread is from last June. I already set up a modded GPU BIOS for my friend, he's too tech illiterate to know how to flash it on his own though. I have to wait till spring break in March to help him with that. He's in IL, and I'm in NC. Also before we flashed it we were going to replace the thermal paste, also something he wouldn't be good at.
Thanks for the replies! -
Here's what I did to my G51: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/505552-asus-g51vx-overheating-fixed.html
Basically the same laptop as the G50. -
I think it does already downclock when out of a game. He runs around 70c idle and over 100c when playing a game. Many times he's had the game lag because it downclocks from getting too hot.

70C idle is high heck its what I ran with dust in it and upclocked because it was using 2 monitors. 50 to 55C without a NB cooler is what I consider normal for myne anyways and its overclocked and running at 1.11 volt.

You're mistaken if you think a different driver will have any significant effect on your temps. Like the others said, clean out your heatsink/fan, apply new thermal paste, undervolt as long as you can remain stable, and if all else fails, buy a laptop cooler (in that order).

I'm going to try drivers right now since the problem seems so similar to that other post. Also this is the only thing I can try right now since my friend is in a different state.

Your problem is not driver related, at all.
Tell your friend to get a can of compressed air, and clean the vents. Regular temps for that laptop should not even reach 90C unless its on a covered surface.
Hell, I had that laptop, and even when overclocked to 9800m GTS speeds, I never got over 95C when playing on my bed... -

We have cleaned out the vents, just haven't opened the bottom plate to do it that way. He's just not secure enough with doing any of this on his own.

To get the fan out so you can make sure the cooler is clean you have to take the assembly off which means at a minimum repasting the cpu. You can with the bottom off however attempt to get some of the dust out from the fan side without dis assembly. -
We were going to re-paste everything any way once he came back. Playing at over 100c is going to kill that laptop quick. He bought it refurbished last summer because he didn't have a lot of money. He wanted to last his 4 years in college, but it is hardly going last 2 at that temperature.

If he hasn't done so, lift the machine an inch or so off the surface and get a cooler. This doesn't really require any technical skill and is pretty easy to do.
Also, software undervolt the CPU. They share the same heatpipe and undervolting my CPU brought it down at least 5-10C. -
I need a cool running 9800m GS driver.
