Guys I'm a big fan of RPG's. I've been playing WoW but the lag is horrible I'm on 56k.

I want an RPG that's sort of like WoW and Diablo 2. Preferably offline. I want one that's long, and open like WoW and Diablo 2.

I'm currently thinking about Everquest but my problem is that it's online and I only connect at a max of 32kbps. and my only options for fast internet are ISDN(we're still waiting to confirm if I can actually get it at my house. I live about 5+ miles from town. So, I'm not sure if the cables reach out this far.

Has anyone ever played Everquest on 56k? If so is any faster than trying to play WoW?

I also heard Guild Wars was 56k friendly. Is that true?

My latency on WoW is mostly 1000+.

Ok.... I know this is alot but here's a brief overview of what I"m looking for.
A fun RPG that will play on this system:
    1.6 MHz Intel Celeron M
1300+ RAM after subtracting shared GPU
    128MB ATI Radeon X200M

Offline would be great but if it can be played online at a decent rate online would be fine. Thanks guys.

The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion is one of the greatest RPG's ever created. I own it and it is hands down the best RPG ive ever played. But since your an MMO lover, you likly wouldnt like a game of its calaber. Its a singleplayer game, with really no end to the game, there is always stuff to do. There are lots of quests, but you can do alot of things. Freelance adventuring, thivery, hunting, treasure looting, are just some of the things you can do that dont include quests. Plus there is a huge mod community, which is always adding tons of content.

Ill warn you thouhg, it is a very demanding game for a computer. But its also on XBOX 360, but then you cant get all the great mods. Its specs are as follow from the collectors edition box in front of me.

    Minimum Requirments:
    Windows XP
    2GHZ Pentium 4 or equivlent
    512MB RAM
128MB Direct3D compatable video card and DirectX 9.0 compatable driver
    8X DVD-ROM Drive
    4.6GB free disk space

    Recommended:
    3GHZ Pentium 4 or equivlent
    1GB RAM
ATI X800 series, Nvidia GeForce 6800 series, or better

Your graphics card isnt on the list of supported cards on the box, the ATI cards go from Radeon 9500 series to Radeon 9800 series, then X600 to X1900 series cards. Now that I look at those specs and yours I see you have no chance of playing the game. But if you get a new computer, or if you have a 360, try this game, it is amazing.

I can recommend something for you
If you want offiline RPG (Diablo style) then try Dungeon Seige 2, Never Winter Night and expansion. That 2 games is very good.
For online play, you can try Guild War, work on 56k connection but i am not sure how smooth it will run. And there is Silkroad and many other MMORPG with 56k. Go can go here and look for yourself a game you may like

Hope this help, have a nice day

Everquest will eat you alive. Guildwars you will probably be okay with, cities will be tough however it is not incredibly demanding due to instanced zones. I agree with anubissx Dungeon Seige 2 is great as well as all the NWN's

Oblivion is the top of everyones RPG charts at the moment. I can also recommend Knights of the Old Republic. Whilst some would argue its not a 'proper' RPG, its still got a good storyline and good gameplay. The sequel is also a decent enough game.

Elder Scrolls, KoToR, NWN and Dungeon Siege etc are all like 10000s of times slower than Diablo 2 or WoW.
I have played all those games and I have to say that not one of them lives up to the quality of D2 or WoW. It takes at least a few seconds to kill ONE enemy in all those games (not a boss, just a normal enemy), nothing like the fast paced mass killing feeling that D2 has. Guild Wars is not a game for you if you love the RP side of WoW, because Guild Wars is very heavily PvP based.

I would recommend you try out Sacred (and expansion). Some people prefer Sacred to D2, but I find the quest and leveling system a bit tedius to use. Sacred does have its own charm, and is a pretty good game.
If you are looking for a Diablo II clone, try out Fate. It is not as good as D2 in my opinion, but it does have the Diablo feel to it with improved graphics.
There is a game called Titan Quest which is coming out soon (and you get the demo for it). It is a sort of improved 3D version of D2 (gives that initial feeling at least), so you might want to give it a try.

From the ones I've mentioned above, Titan Quest will probably be the only one that might struggle with your system (as it hasn't been released yet and all).

And Siony, Oblivion is not at the top of everyone's charts. It contains at least a dozen bugs, way too much dialogue (just like NWN, get the point you stupid NPC before I'm forced to run you through with my sword and fail the mission automatically while at the same time being chased forever by an infinite number of city guards), is an awful port from the Xbox360 (it uses PC hardware so unbelievebly inefficiently bad), and is pretty time wasting (you cannot really complete any mission/quest, with the exception of the ones at the very start of the game, from start to finish in like 30 mins). I regret having wasted £35 on it.

Budding some of us might like an RPG (like oblivion) where you have to think and have some skill to be good at. A game like diablo or wow could be played by a blind monkey. Oblivion takes skill, thought, planning, stragety to survive in. It is a far more rewarding game in my opinion than any MMO. But if your one of those retards who like to go around thinking your so great because you've played thousands of hours and have a level XXXXXX charcter, and just anhaliting low level people, ruining the games and genere for them, then just stay in wow. You dont deserve Oblivion.

Sorry for ranting and bashing MMO's but thats just how I feel.

I apologize if I caused offense to you by giving my opinion on apparently a game which, to you, required a lot of thinking and skill and planning and strategy simply to stay alive in.
For me, it was more like fast clicking through hours of *boring* dialogue, then opening the quest menu, reading what was required, and then executing it successfully and reap the measly rewarded without the need of any thinking or planning etc. at all. Perhaps I am just the kind of player that doesn't really get sucked into the Role Play bit, and just goes around plouging through quests paying no attention to how Farmer Pete (a NPC) would feel if I stole his Tome of whatever or something. Nevertheless, Oblivion still has the bugs and is a pretty poor port from the xbox360.

I, like the creator of this thread, are people who enjoy WoW and D2. I, being an ex-veteran D2 player am only giving him my opinion on more heavy Role Play based games like Oblivion.

Neverwinter Nights has to be one of my favorite RPG's of all time. I'm not too sure on this, but I think it has 100+ hours of gameplay, not including the expansions. It also has a very active Mod Community (I suggest Elegia Eternum, its about a 20 meg download and its free :D ). I used to play online with my old dial up connection (28.8kbps) and it was very smooth for the most part. Its also very cheap nowadays. Buy it, you won't regret it.

LOL. I have to disagree. Oblivion doesn't require anything of the mentioned above. No brains needed for Oblivion either so you can put that in same Category as diablo and WoW. If you're not using a LOT of mods for oblivion, it's pretty much the same as Playing, Grand Theft Auto but in another Era. Hack, Slash, Follow the Compass marker to finish the Quest. And travel back for reward. There's wild discussion on Many forums about what really counts as an RPG. and let me say like this, Customized Characters, Stats like STR AGI etc etc has absolutely nothing to do with it.

If you have trouble running newer games i can suggest some a bit old but still VERY good gameplay.

*Bauldurs Gate Series is Big enough to keep you busy a while.
*Fallout 1 & 2 are good games with a nice futuristic Twist.
*Darkstone is an older 3D action/Rpg but very fun to play.

I would suggest looking in the Classics Shelves for some real Gameplay Value! Many of those games Doesn't Require too much GPU Power, They cost less, and ther are TONS of old good games to play. Some are way better than any of the new "hyped" games that are released nowadays.

There are even some you can find on Abandoware Sites. As i understand most Abandonware is legal so check some of those sites out for some really nice old titles that can keep you busy for hours.

High end Graphics and spending fortunes on Computer power is not value compared to REAL gameplay. Oblivion might earn it's value in a year or two when you can actually play it well on a Mid end mashine, and there a LOTS of good Mods available for it.

Agreed, NWN Diamond Pack is $20 at amazon.com. This version includes the 3 expansions, 3 premium modules and some "normal" modules. It has lots of mods available for download, you can play it online for free and it has a Dungeon Master client (in an online game, you set the rules for everyone else and you direct the action) + the toolset necessary to create your own mod. What else would you need?

KOTOR and KOTOR 2 are good games too, I personally am not a Star Wars fan, my brother is and I tried them and found myself surprised. Its engine is based on NWN's so you'll notice some similarities.

TES 3 and 4 are really good too (mostly known as Morrowind and Oblivion). Whatever is said from one applies to the other (roughly) though obviously Oblivion may have better features since it's the latest one and also has a toolset for creating your own mods such as NWN.

Those are the ones I have and played. I'm not much into Diablo-like games though.

Some other recommendations if you're able to find them: Baldur's Gate 1&2 +exp, Fallout 1&2, Icewind Dale 1&2 +exp and Planescape: Torment. Though I have not played them fully and are fairly dated (except maybe the Icewind Dales) and may be hard to find.

If you are looking for a diablo style game Titans quest looks very promising. Plays alot like diablo with a WoW interface imo. It isnt due out for another week or two but the demo was fun to play and looks as if the full game will have lots of character choices and specialties.

Both. You have the option of choosing which. However, first person perspective is much nicer than 3rd in my opinion, as the character model of yourself looks stiff.

Well, you do not have SMGs or Grenade Launchers in Oblivion, so you can't get the fast paced FPS feeling in this game (one of the reasons I dislike this game - too slow).
Otherwise it's pretty the same as a FPS, you see your sword or whatever weapon in your hand on the bottom left or right corner of the screen, and you click your mouse to swing it or shoot your arrow or cast your spell. You can also have some sort of a cross hair at the center of your screen, which helps with the aiming of your swing and the interaction of objects.

yep...thats what i meant by "first person shooter"

well...it looks like i might buy oblivion :) now that i know you can play in 1st person (one of the main reasons that i never considered oblivion was that i thought it was a 3rd person only game)
