Hi everybody. I'll be taking part in a Christmas LAN party in a few weeks and need some ideas for free online multiplayer games that are fun, easy to learn, and have modest system requirements. The games must be easy for a beginner to start playing on right away and since most of us will be gaming on laptops they can't be too demanding system-wise.

The games that have already been decided on are League of Legends and S4 League.

Since I mainly prefer first-person shooters so I have already picked Team Fortress 2 as an alternative. I'm also considering Alliance of Valiant Arms (A.V.A.). If you guys have any other suggestions please throw them out there!!!

Remember, the games have to be free, fun, and not require a GTX 590. ;)

Team Fortress 2 all the way. That game is about the most fun multiplayer game in history, and it's very accessible to all sorts of players.

Some of the best LAN moments have been with Empire Earth.
And from Monday it will be free on GoG.com for 48 hours. :D
Its also from 2001 so if you can see past the lacking of eye candy it wont dissapoint.

Another good free game is Trackmania Nations: Forever.

Can you do LAN matches with Battlefield 1942? I could play that all day...

You could try League of Legends. It's a MOBA much like Heroes of Newerth, just more newbie-friendly and it's a bit more team oriented.

I doubt it. I'm the only person out of the whole group who has that game and each person needs a unique CD key in order to play online. Don't tell me to ask other people to pirate the game just for a LAN party because I don't condone pirating.

Games for the LAN party must be free so that everyone can play. Heck, I don't even have Generals myself.

Il load up a pretty good list then. :3
All free so the bang to buck ratio will be off the grid!!!

GoG.com - Empire Earth: Gold Edition (Free from 12.12 to 14.12)
    DRM free strategy game.

STEAM - Team Fortress 2 (Free):
    Another bump for TF2.

    STEAM - Alien Swarm (Free):
Four player coop alien slaying. :3

    Ace of Spades (Free):
Think Minecraft, think random FPS game & then combine them.
    Thats Ace of Spades. xD

Aliance of Valiant Arms (Free MMOFPS)
A free FPS that feels like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

    Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (Demo):
Offers a single map playable alone or in multiplayer.
    BOT SUPPORT!

    Halo: Combat Evolved (Demo):
Offers one map and five gamemodes.
Runs great on lower performing hardware too.

    AssaultCube (Open Source):
Its small, its light on the system requirement and it features guns.
    Instant hit. :D

I can make the list go on and on, but i think i made my point that PC gaming can be good and free. :3

Thank you so much for taking the time to make this list! Unfortunately, the LAN party won't be this week which crosses off Empire Earth. I'm probably going to cut out any and all Steam games as well because those are only downloadable from the Steam client itself and that would hog a lot of bandwidth come game day if people don't already have the games.

As of right now, the Halo demo and AssaultCube are definitely going onto my flash drive for the party. :D

You can download the Steam games yo your client, backup the game files and send them over to the other gamers.
    Its all good.

Does this backup only the game files, or is any personal data or files included? I definitely do not want to be sharing any of those. Also, I have the Premium version of TF2 since I bought it before it became free-to-play, so would that cause conflicts when other people who are playing it free are using my data?

Only game files. I have shared game files like this all the time with friends. You need a steam account and password to log in and use it no matter what.

And Empire Earth is free for two days as long you check out with it. Ask your friends to go to gog.com 12/12 to 12/14, add it to their basket and checkout and it will show $0.00 cost.

Thank you for this info. I've checked out the Empire Earth link and I see what you mean now. I'm definitely going to download this game and spread the word. I really enjoyed the Age of Empires series and this game should be just as fun.

Empire Earth had the toughest campaigns :D Yeah I'm looking at you "German Campaign"!

Maybe Quake Live? Don't know if you can LAN that either though...
