I was Going to Buy Steam's ANNO 2070, but...

ANNO 2070 has a 3 machine activation limit, and I totally hate that kind of DRM. I'd rather get this game for $18 cheap / the Deluxe version than buy Steam's $33 version. The torrents of ANNO 2070 are sad because you don't have the Ark.

Future games of any Game Producer should be boycotted if they have activation limits. But Battlefield 2's 15 activation limit was bearable.

So I guess I have to skip the current 40% off Anno 2070 Steam Sale... it's not discounted enough to justify a 3 machine activation limit. The Deluxe version + all dlc's is worth at most $18 to me.

I guess I'll keep playing my ANNO 1404, which is good enough too and has no activation limit. Ubisoft is not getting much of my money when they start activation limits. I'd rather torrent their game and wait until it's cheap to buy when they do that.

thought the drm was unlimited activation to 3 machines as well as contact their support to get more activations.

With a 3 activation limit, it's basically an extended rental. It might be worth a dollar or so to me if I were interested.

It might be that, but 3 computers is too little future proof. Then I'd have to buy the game all over again. Maybe they should limit it to 7 machine unlimited activations instead.

You can contact UbiSoft for more keys [provide proof of purchase].
I do agree, it really sucks and very annoying.

I agree. I'm actually ok with DRM, but this "provide proof of purchase" can be a pain.

    1. You can lose your "Proof of Purchase", especially when you haven't played the game in a few years.

    2. If it's a gift, then you probably never had proof of purchase in the first place [I've been in this situation before].

    3. Considering it's a UbiSoft game, why can't they just make it similar to their other games. Attach to your UPlay account and done.

I rarely ever play a title again after finishing it. (Dawn of War being a recent Exception).

I really don't understand their logic behind DRM.

The game still gets torrented/pirated easily by Russian crack teams, so all they're doing is giving paying customers a hard time with DRM and install limits.

Check out Amazon's page on ANNO 2070, especially the reviews! One reveiwer said:

I was horrified to learn that the DRM on this game is now set up to prevent more than 3 hardware upgrades on your computer. Go over that limit, and it's Game Over for you, and Ubisoft has no intentions of helping fix the issue.

This is the last Ubisoft game I purchase. Considering that I've switched through 3 graphic cards in the last 2 years, such a ridiculous DRM implementation does nothing more than to annoy their paying customers. And then they wonder why piracy is so rampant.

I know that some folks will comment about this not being "relevant" or a reflection of the game, but when it comes to game publishers pulling such cheap tricks on their customers, they deserve no forgiveness or mercy.

Besides, I want everyone to know that this game will not work on their PC after 3 hardware changes, so they should think twice before spending their money on this game.

Amazon.com: ANNO 2070 - Deluxe Edition [Download]: Video Games

I am re-torrenting the game right now. ANNO 2070 is a rip off unless it's $10 to $15 total, I should have bought it non Steam when it was on sale at $18 deluxe edition but I wanted the Steam DLCs.

I guess the Amazon Anno 2070 is not Steam, right?

Nope Amazon's Anno 2070 doesn't activate on Steam.

    ---

I would like to point you guys to this post on the Steam forum about the Activation Limit: Anno 2070 TAGES DRM FAQ

There's one info there that wasn't mentioned here yet, you get back 1 activation if you've used up all 3 activation already after 30 days automatically.

Is it correct to assume that the 30 days countdown starts right after you've used your 3rd activation?

UbiSoft DRM is fine by me as long as they DO NOT require an active internet connection for single-player-campaign play; thankfully those DRM measures were patched out last year; AC:2, AC:B, Splinter Cell:Conviction; all have offline modes.

I think a lot of the gaming community still needs to realize UbiSoft is getting better with their DRM measures; not the best but getting better. At least ANNO 2070 doesn't require online play like AC:2 and AC:B required when they launched.

    Just my thoughts

I guess what they fail to see as a gaming company are the habits of their clients, I mean I think it's safe to assume that the majority of the ones that replaces hardware yearly would be gamers (either that or my intelligence is insulted thinking I'd buy the same game again 3-4 video cards away).

then the AC2 fiasco where a single player game is required to be online to play...

I really hope they fix their DRM issues, NBR isn't even a gaming forum, I can imagine the flaming happening on those kinds of forums.

Its pretty simple really. The people that sell the DRM software have all sorts of nice and pretty Power Points with charts showing how their software will help them increase sales by x% by thwarting xx% of piracy attempts.

They know its a losing battle, but they hope that it will increase sales enough to offset the licensing of the DRM or the development of the DRM.

I think a content management system like Steam is a better way. Allow you to gift or transfer a title.

EA is wising up and instead of DRM, they just include a 1-time code for the DLC with retail copies. I figure you will see this more and more. It sucks for resale.. but much better than some of the copy schemes out there.
