Apparently Portal 2 will be getting some free DLC this wednesday. It's called "Peer Review" (sounds like more co-op play to me)

The Witcher 2 is also getting free DLC.
"Proper" expansions will cost money.
Personally i dont mind dlc, as long as its not some lame code to activate content already on the disc. -

Who needs free dlc from developers? Everyone knows that the community makes more innovative AND a larger quantity of DLC when the DEV TOOLS ARE SHIPPED WITH THE GAME...
why don't they do this anymore? -

I also like free lunches. Where do I go for that?

Most other developers no longer release such tools. -
Hmmm there used to be free content along with patches in older games @.@

Screw all other games. FINALLY Valve release the DLC for Portal 2. Been waiting since early summer.
And I would pay money for this DLC for shure if it contains new maps -
Tripwire Interactives updates, patches, expansions for all their games so far are guaranteed to be free. Pay once and game is supported for about 3 years with all updates free. And as said, all DLCs for Witcher 2 were made free. Pretty awesome I thought.
But then Tripwire is a PC exclusive developer. Aren't trying to profit by ripping off console players who seem to have endless cash for stupid updates that should be free like 5 new maps on COD for $15...
CD Projekt latest DLC update for FREE! Included with other improvements in patch 2.0
- New difficulty that will challenge experienced players. Rewarded with new gear specifically tailored to that level of difficulty as a reward.
- BioWare would have charged $20 for this update.

and, obviously, valve

I'll admit the DLC free for Portal 2 is nice surprise. But TF2 free stuff didn't happen until it's been nearly 3 years since I last played the game. Tripwire says you pay once, and all upgrades are free from day 1.
- And Tripwire even makes mods free. Valve profited handsomely from the HL2 mod, Counter Strike. Tripwire would have offered that as a free patch.
I think that's what the OP is saying. Nothing like a catch saying if you pre-purchase early you get something free. You get something free after it's been so long no one in their right mind would pay even 1/4 the full price for a game it's so old. -

L4D2 has been getting a lot of support since release as well. A few map packs, porting in L4D1 content, patches, new game types in rotation, pretty much a constant effort.

DLCs that are free are just called patches.
The best patch I ever got for a game was the Half-Life 1 patch that included TFC. Best moment ever!
I wish all developers gave free DLC
