I wonder about 2008 Video Cards

Ok, so i was wondering about the upcoming Video Cards ( obviously Laptops ) in 2008 What should we expect to see? Nvidia coming out with a 9000~ series that will make DX 10 games run like Counter-Strike 1.6 Like a Champ? ( not-hard haha) I don't know what are your guys thoughts i've just been wondering since i'm going to go ahead and wait to get my laptop

 

You aren't going to see mid-range Nvidia 9XXX or ATI HD3XXX series cards running DX10 games like CS 1.6, but you will probably run them pretty darn well. I'd imagine games like Crysis and Supreme Commander will actually be able to play at higher settings with showstoppers such as dynamic lighting and shadows.

In my experience extreme jumps in power occur every two development cycles, roughly every two years. I went from using an ATI X800m to an Nvidia 8600m GT and the improvement is phenomenal. I can play things an order of magnitude more smoothly AND at higher image quality. Still, the Nvidia 6 series and the ATI sub-1000 series were VERY impressive. I didn't find the 7 series or the X1XXX series to be worthy of an upgrade.

Still, that doesn't mean that high end 9 series or HD3XXX series cards wont be VERY powerful. I'd venture that high end mobile cards of the next gen will trump even today's desktop 8800GTX in performance.

 

yeah im rockin a X700 Pro myself in my desktop jeez remember when that was the card to have and i want to get a laptop but kinda dont have the $$ right now wondering maybe if i should Wait 5-6 months for all the new 08' stuff to start coming out and maybe drop $2,000 into a Powerhouse Laptop, and since advancements happen everyday i wouldn't be surprised if a hugh upgrade happens in that time

 

The limitation for the notebooks is heat and size. Desktop cards keep nearly doubling in processing power. But have been gaining size, heat, and power consumption along the way.

Notebooks dont have this option so I dont expect it to scale directly the same as the desktop cards do.

so while the 9800gtx is expected to be 2x stronger than the 8800gtx in a desktop, I expect the mobil 9600gt to be maybe 1.5x stronger than the m8600gt.

the one good thing going for the next wave is that a die shink will be happening, a die shrink means less power, heat, and size, but not dramaticlly so.

 

I wonder when a 9600GT would come out really heh wonder what games would be out? hehe

Not 100% true.
The Geforce 7's used less power than the 6'es. 8 uses a bit more power than 7, but still offers better performance/watt.

Of course, with ATI it seems heat and power consumption is still running amok.
(Oddly enough, the situation is reversed in motherboards, it seems)
