Ok so as the title says I'm getting bored of GTA IV (and pretty much all the games I have) and I'm looking for an FPS I can buy that I haven't played yet.

I have played all the MoH and CoD series (including the most recent ones), Crysis, Star Wars Battlefront 1/2, Quake, Doom (started playing that way back in '95 when it first came out), Crysis Warhead etc. so I've played a fair few FPSs...

What I'm looking for is one that plays like Crysis and is set in WW2 or is set in a "as real as possible world". I liked Crysis, but only up to the point where I started having to shoot the aliens...

I won't be playing online (due to NAT issues that I can't solve because I use a USB dongle mobile modem with Vodafone...) so a multiplayer mode doesn't even need to be present.

I'll be running it on the following rig -

    Asus M70VM
    Intel C2D 2.26ghz CPU
    nVidia 9600M GS 512MB GPU
    4gb RAM
XP and Vista 32bit versions in a dual boot
    Realtek sound card

So does anyone have any recommendations?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions. :)

TimeShift, BlackSite Area51, but they`re rather dull. My best sugestion would be the Orange Box.

Steam's online sale? Pick a few and pay the same price as one from a big name store.

I'll second that. Get Bioshock on steam its only 5 bucks right now, compared to somewhere around 20 bucks at the store. Great story and a solid FPS.

EDIT: By the way, how does GTA IV run on your system? I am kinda dragging my feet on buying it since it runs so poorly on most systems.

Not World War 2, but the Tom Clancy games might fit the bill...

Rainbow Six 3 or Rainbow Six Vegas
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 1 or 2

SWAT 4 is another tactical shooter you might consider...

All of the above aren't quite as action- or story- oriented as MoH or CoD...and their squad based unlike Crysis which was a lone wolf type of game...

    DAIKATANA

Seriously. After you play that you'll wish you're playing GTA IV again.

Forgot to mention I don't like using Steam, I have my reasons...

GTA IV - runs in 1024x640, med textures, max render, slightly above the console settings (mid 20s) with shadow density at 0 but I only get an average, albeit playable, of 25 fps. It's not that which is making me bored of it, I tend to pick games up, get bored, play something else and then go back to them again anyway and I am lacking in FPS games that I haven't played to death...

Oh yeah, forgot to mention - played a Rainbow Six game on the PS1 (or was it PS2) and couldn't stand it, I hate SWAT games! I'm more of a "lone wolf"/action FPS gamer.

I played Sniper Elite once, and it was ok but I got bored of sniping people, I prefer a FPS games where I can snipe the AI if I wish but I can also run in and shoot them to pieces and still walk out just alive...

I might check out Far Cry 2, seeing as it's basically the same engine as Crysis (as I understand it), keep the suggestions coming though, the more the better. :)

I beg to differ, that game was fun in its days.
John Romero did a pretty good job on it, and the story , and the timeline, although it received horrible criticism.

Daikatana was one of the first fps games I`ve played with a real story to follow.

Heh I've just seen the min/recommend specs for Far Cry 2, according to Gamespot anyway, apparently it requires 1gb vram min...

...so seeing as I have a 512mb card and could only just about comfortably run Crysis in med/high in a res of 1024x640 so it was playable and still looked good I might be giving Far Cry 2 a miss, might see what the first Far Cry is like though.

And as usual there isn't a demo of Far Cry 2, games companies, I'm not shelling money out on games that I may not be able to run if I can't get hold of a free demo to find out first.

Anyway I'll see what the Far Cry demo is like.

EDIT: - Just did a System Requirements Lab test and here's the pic of the result. Who's correct them or Gamespot? I think I will have a look at Far Cry 2 after all...

Please keep the suggestions coming though. And please, let's not start a flame war over Daikatana, it was slated in it's day iirc, some people do like it though, lets leave it at that. :)

What about the original Far Cry?? It's not WW2, but has good graphics, a great setting and an engaging storyline

Storyline of original Far Cry is not that original, honestly :) But anyway, it is still good choice for gaming since FC is excellent games even today, four years after it has been released.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky, they are post apocalyptic FPS/RPGs, BioShock was amazing and you don't need to buy it on Steam most stores still have it and it does not require Steam to play, Legendary was pretty cool, not as bad as the critics made it out to be. Wouldn't recommend Far Cry 2 unless you are into ultra boring console FPS games.

I'd second that. Far Cry 2 is incredibly dull and the combat/ hit detection feels all wrong compared to Crysis and CoD.

I'd seriously consider playing Half Life 2 Episode 2 if I were you. Steam issues aside, Episode 2, in my opinion is as good as Half life 2 has ever been, and for an old engine it has fantastic physics and graphics. The combat, story, and weapons are immense too.

Thanks! I am not expecting too much running GTA IV anyway, so 25 frames would be fine with me -- maybe I will go get it today then.

Far Cry 2 runs much better than Crysis, I can play 1680 x 1050 on all medium settings with about 35-40 frames easily and I can play Crysis 1680 x 1050 on dirt low settings and get around 25-30 frames (overclocked on both though). So I would still give it a try if your looking for open world type game.

Other than that Bioshock, not on Steam, is still a good choice, any of the Stalker games are also good, Timeshift is alright, any of the Call of Duty games are fun but they are linear and you fly right through them in about a day, and the old WW2 Battlefield's are is the closest to open world WW2 game, but they are kinda more for online -- and the graphics are definitely a little dated.

Ok so I've gone out and bought myself a copy of Far Cry 2. Jeez they really ballsed up on Crysis didn't they.

I just started the game and I'm running it in 1920x1200 (native res for my notebook) and I've set it to very high (or as high as the options will go (some only go up to High)) for the video settings and it's running ok, bit laggy, probably doing about 20fps from the looks of it but I haven't used fraps in the background to find out exactly what it's running at and it is just about playable but I'm going to adjust the settings/res to see if I can get any better fps out of the game...

I couldn't run Crysis in my native res and still be able to play it with it on the highest settings on all but the shadows which I had to turn down to medium, I had to run it at best in 1024x640...

EDIT: So I put fraps on and it's telling me that in 1920x1200 I'm getting 10-11 fps! So I've tweaked the res/settings I'm using a res of 1280x800, most settings on high/very high but I've reduced the shadows to medium as I had to with Crysis and I'm getting a fairly playable 20-25fps.

It seems odd though fraps is telling me I'm getting that fps range but it looks like it's running a bit faster than that?!

EDIT 2 - fraps was correct, here's what the FC2 benchmark app is telling me -

    Settings: Demo(Ranch Small), 1280x800 (60Hz), D3D9, Fixed Time Step(No), Disable Artificial Intelligence(No), Full Screen, Anti-Aliasing(None), VSync(No), Overall Quality(Custom), Vegetation(Very High), Shading(High), Terrain(Very High), Geometry(Very High), Post FX(High), Texture(Ultra High), Shadow(Medium), Ambient(High), Hdr(Yes), Bloom(Yes), Fire(High), Physics(High), RealTrees(High)

    * Average Framerate: 21.58
    * Max. Framerate: 31.29
    * Min. Framerate: 17.58

Seems to be an interesting game so far, looks fantastic as well. Just need to tweak the settings a bit more to bring that average framerate up I guess...

I am absolutely amazed that a relatively new game such as Far Cry 2 will run on my rig as well as it does (specs below for those that haven't read the first post...)

    Asus M70VM
    Intel C2D 2.26ghz CPU
    nVidia 9600M GS 512MB GPU
    4gb RAM
XP and Vista 32bit versions in a dual boot
    Realtek sound card

Shame companies can't make games that work as well as Far Cry 2 all the time, especially R* Toronto...

Thanks for suggesting FC2 guys, it looks on the face of it to be a cross between an FPS and the GTA series and the African setting makes a change from the usual WW2/Alien settings you get in FPS games.

The suggestions were very much appreciated. :)

Well from your original post you wanted a WW2 with an "as real as possible" world, so I suggest Red Orchestra :p
