I chose to buy a laptop with this particular ati card partly becouse what's written at the bottom of this article, and the fact that I like to play games and would like to do so on a decent laptop.
Quote: "We should also note that the Mobility Radeon X1600 will be fully supported in the Catalyst Mobility driver suite, so notebook users won't be left waiting for driver updates"
Even though i tried 6.2 .. 6.3 ... and now 6.4 they the drivers still don't work!!! I'm left with the driver that came with my laptop, and no upgrade on the manufacturer site compared to what came on the CD.. and who knows how old that driver is. The Omega driver works, but doesn't do the trick. It identifies my card as "M56" or something like that. Playing with that driver without any tweaks made my laptop go VERY hot, to the point that i feared the whole computer would melt.... so ... i installed the old drivers again.
The main reason i'm annoyed is that the Card itself is not performing as well as i hoped. And i thought some new drivers could fix some issues. Especially in games.
Any other people having trouble installing the drivers from ATI?? I know about the note that lists all the supported laptop manufacturers but what about all the other big manufacturers? ACER, Sony, Toshiba, LG, Dell, Asus, Fujitsu Siemens, HP, And so on??? Are all blocked becouse of "This is to protect systems from installing drivers that may disable features or functionality provided by the system manufacture".
I think it's just bulls**t, and probably bussiness/politics and a money issue. I can't see any real reason that they shouldn't work. They all use the same components but in a different shell...
Why do these laptop manufacturers even brag about using the latest ati GPU when you can't even get the latest drivers for it...

It's interesting that the new driver would make the laptop run hotter . . perhaps the old one kept the video card at lower clocks.
Take a look at this thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=49127
There's a link in there to download the latest ATI Mobility Catalyst 6.4 drivers. See if those are any better.
In order to keep your laptop cooler, you may consider getting a cooling pad. I found that is a great thing to have for gaming. It keeps my laptop much cooler.
Chaz -
what notebook do you have?
did you uninstall the older drivers first?
post back,
pb,out. -
I have a LG S1 Express Dual.
2.0Ghz Core Duo.
1024Mb Ram
256 Mb. Mobility Radeon x1600.
Yes. I uninstalled the old drivers first. Downloading with firefox I'm able to download the Catalyst 6.4 driver. but with Internet Explorer I can only download a software that checks if my laptop is compatible with the drivers. I just tryed it and it said no.
And as a reply to the other post, the clock speeds are. 419/468. A bit low concidering what i know they can be clocked at in some models.
http://www.hothardware.com/viewarticle.aspx?articleid=756&cid=2 here's a laptop with about the same specs. I scored 3800 something in 3D Mark 05 as well but the speed isn't really the issue.. I'm getting glitches and textures messing up in Playing Oblivion for instance. Even at very low settings Framerates still hover around 20-30 FPS.. same as when i play at maximum settings with shaddows and all.
I can live with that - nothing is perfect, but it annoys me that I CAN'T use the ati drivers. And therefor would like to know if anyone else having trouble using them or if it's just this particular Manufacturer / or the X1000 series. -
i fail the driver check from ATI also..you have to get them from a different place then ATI. try somewhere like here:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1374
and use the mobility modder to install it (since it is a desktop driver).
hopet his helps.
pb,out. -
I just tryed that too ... and even the "Have Disk" option.. though reading the .ini files there's no 1600 listed .. none of the 1000 series are... quite strange if you ask me... =/
-
im a bit confused...i dont remember anywhere in the mobility modder for the have disc option...
which .ini files did you read through?
pb,out. -
C2_31959.inf
CX_31959.inf
Tryed both They are in the folder. /ATI/SUPPORT/6-4_xp_2k_dd_ccc..../Driver/2KXP_INF/
in www.driverheaven.net --> Mobilitymodder the write about the option to pick the driver manually. That's why i tryed this way too... -
very interesting..ill have to think about this one..
you using the desktop drivers with mobility modder and it doesnt work..hmm
ill get back to you on this.
pb,out. -
I hope something works for you. I've got a w3j with an x1600 coming someday and the first thing I'm gonna do when I get some free time is pop in Oblivion...
-
Might be that the Mobility Modder doesn't list those cards Yet. V3 that is. I Checked the original .ini files from the 6.4 Mobility Catalyst install. and there's none of the x1000 series listed there either....
I installed the "Non Mobilty Version" 6.4 Catalyst Drivers again and checked the original .ini files there and whollaa ... the x1600 is listed but i'm yet to find out if i dare try to install it since it's not for laptop... -
just use omega's
www.omegadrivers.com -
*doh* If i read the release notes before i post i would have noticed that the x1600 isn't even listed as one of the supported cards in the ATI 6.4 Catalyst Release.
*sigh* Maybe my card is jsut too new to have some updated drivers yet. Guess i'll have to wait and try again then. -

The ATI Mobility Catalyst 6.4 driver supports the X1600, and all the X1000 series cards.
-
I know people only use the DHmodtool3 on desktop Radeon drivers, but has anyone tried them on the mobility drivers?
Maybe someone should? Hopefully it does the same to mobility drivers as it does desktop Radeon drivers. -

Yeah but mike, the mod tool is for the purpose of modifying the desktop drivers so they will install on a laptop . . lol. Probably doesn't work the other way around.
-
I don't understand why the Mobility Drivers won't install? If your manufacturer isn't listed as supported, then that first link won't let you download them...but if you get ahold of the actual file, there's nothing that stops you. My Gateway's not listed there, but as long as I get the newest Mobility Catalyst actual driver set file, it'll install fine. If I click on the link on ATI's site, it tells me it's not compatible.
Just download the direct file and try that. Search on www.driverheaven.net or just Google for a link. I have a friend with the x1600 on his laptop and he's running the 6.3's without a problem. No idea if he's tried the 6.4's yet. -
These are the chipsets supported in "Catalyst Mobility 6.4 for Windows XP.
Graphics technologies supported
* Mobility Radeon® X800
* Mobility Radeon® X700
* Mobility Radeon® X600
* Mobility Radeon® X300
* Mobility Radeon® 9800
* Mobility Radeon® 9700
* Mobility Radeon® 9600
There's no x1600 series listed there so it's not about the manufacturer.. I checked the .ini file as well and there's no x1600 listed in there too..
But the desktop version of Catalyst 6.4 list of supported chipsets are as follows: The Catalyst® software suite is designed to support the following ATI desktop products:
* Radeon® X1900 series
* Radeon® X1800 series
* Radeon® X1600 series
* Radeon® X1300 series
* Radeon® X850 series
* Radeon® X800 series
* Radeon® X700 series
* Radeon® X600 series
* Radeon® X550 series
* Radeon® X300 series
* Radeon® 9X00 series
* Radeon® 8500 series
* Radeon® 7X00 series
Above is copy and paste from the release nots on ATI's homepage.
So If anyone is running Mobility catalyst 6.4 with they x1000 series card let me know how that's possible? =/ -
get the desktop catalyst 6.4 drivers, and use mobility modder to install them, 6.3 works flawlessly..and i will give 6.4 a go tonight..if that doesnt work..you might be doing it wrong...
also, mobility modder changes desktop drivers to notebook drivers..i dont think it will work the other way around.

Hi guys,
I was always happy with mobility drivers until Mike and EdF convinced me that Ati Avivo Converter works even on x700. I tried and it works.But only with desktop drivers. I use modded desktop drivers now. Works fine. Mod tool works great and is easy to apply. So if you need the fastest video converter and you have ati - give it a try.
Cheers, -
Hey riggi,
have you had any luck installing the catalyst drivers for x1600 yet? I'm having the same problem at the moment. If only the mobility modder would support this card.
Let us know if you find something. I'm going to continue with this quest also. -
No luck yet i'm afraid. Still using the drivers that came with the laptop ... 8.206 and they are dated back to january. *sigh* I e-mailed the guy who makes the Mobility modder and he had some Beta Version that should support x1600 ... I havn't tryed it out yet though.
Acer has some newer drivers for their systems with mobility x1600 graphics. I downloaded those too, figuring maybe they would work on my laptop even though it's not an Acer. I havn't tried it out yet..
I didn't have to courage to mess with the Lappy too much lately since i've been on tight deadlines at work, and i can't afford computer trouble on the laptop.
Besides from that i'm still waiting :/ I'd prefer if LG just kept their driver more up to date. -
I feel your pain riggi,
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 and have yet to find an acutal ati driver that supports my graphics card. Dell has not updated them. So i have to settle for the DH Mod tool that will modify the drivers for desktop graphics and put them into laptop form. Google that DH Mod tool and it should hopefully work for you.
later, -
You could try the omega drivers. They work on dells.
I'm quite mad!!! Driver issues. ATI.
