i just spec'd out a toshiba p200 that comes with an ATI HD2600 256MB. if you had to choose that or these other three, which would it be?

    quadro fx570m 256MB
    8600GT 512MB
    8700GT 512MB

mind you i do mostly 3Dmax work, but i don't think the quadro is really worth it, but i could be wrong.

I would pick the 8700, just because it gives you power for graphic design, but it's also versatile for gaming, but that's just me. I'm not a graphics designer, so rely on their comments more than mine :D

might be wrong, but the quadro might be the best choice for graphic intense activities... wait for other to respond, tho...

Graphic design, drafting, etc should work more effectively on the Quadro because it is built for those types of applications. Conversely, the Quadro will not perform quite as well at gaming as the other 3 cards. In most cases, only specialized software utilizes GPU power. Many design apps only use the CPU.

I'd go for the 8700m GT for the sheer horsepower. I do graphic design, but as far as I know, Photoshop does not make use of my GPU (I think it is mostly CPU intensive), so the point is irrelevant. Plus, I'm a gamer.

EDIT: I looked up 3DMax, it seems that it does NOT use your GPU at ALL. It is entirely CPU dependant. I may be wrong, but if that is the case forget the Quadro and get the 8700m GT.

The GDDR3 is a noticable improvement over GDDR2. I've heard the FPS difference runs between 15-33%.

3ds Max uses the GPU when you are modelling, specifically in viewport performance, so yes it very much so uses your GPU. It is very hungry for CPU power when rendering, so thats when the CPU comes into play. Your GPU doesnt really matter much when it comes to rendering, its pretty much CPU.
