IGN has picked their choices for genre's and overall game of the year.
Some notables:
Best Multiplayer: World in Conflict
Best Shooter: Bioshock
Best RPG: The Witcher
Best Strategy: World in Conflict
Best Graphics: Crysis
Best Action Game: Gears of War
Game of the Year: Bioshock
Thought Bioshock for GoTY was not a bad pick, i thought it was a toss up between that and CoD4. As far as online goes though, I thought CoD4 was the clear winner, but I'll have to play some more WiC online.
Graphics of course I thought was a no brainer. Very good year overall for video games though that is for sure!
Your thoughts?

Disagree with World in Conflict as I preferred the grander scale in Supreme Commander, but the eyecandy in World in Conflict probably gives it the nod. Most FPS fans will strongly disagree with WIC getting best multiplayer as well.
Good to see the Witcher getting RPG of the year, only competition I could see was from the NWN2 expansion. -
World in Conflict is great
-
World in Conflict seems a good choice. The multiplayer is the best thing about it.
-
2008 Game of the Year: Starcraft 2
-
I know it's been said before, but I know the editor wrote how the state of affairs in the PC realm isn't doing as well in sales as previously while console sales rise for games.
I would hate to see developers reduce their resources towards the PC gaming community and perhaps see less titles or poor ports from console games. -
this year was the year of the shooters, my perm fav is CoD4.
-
Agree with all i enjoy bioshock more than crysis, l'm glad to see the witcher best rpg here but must say that there aren't any opponents
-
Unless the market starts changing, and there's more profits to be made and less risk (Read: LESS PIRACY!), more and more development studios are going to focus on the consoles FIRST, and then port back to the PC... Game development is business, and whatever earns them the most amount of money is the way they will go.
Of course, there will ALWAYS be devs who aren't willing to compromise and will always make the best and greateste for the PC, like Crytek. But those development studios are far and few in between now...
As for the list, I'm good with it... Except, like others have mentioned, WiC doesn't exactly deserve the nod for best multiplayer. It IS good, make no doubts about it, but Best...? Hmm, it's a toss up between CoD4 and WiC, for sure.
As for Bioshock getting the game of the year, I suppose it deserves it, although I personally did not like it at all. Too much hype and too less substance, much like Halo 2--of course, this is just my opinion about that game. -
I think CoD4 should have been there somewhere. Either best multiplayer, or Game of the Year.

lol bioshock got goty too for consoles at the vga awards

Here's what I think...
Best Multiplayer: Unreal Tournament 3 / CoD4
Best Shooter: CoD4 / UT3
Best RPG: The Witcher (isn't that the only RPG released this year?)
Best Strategy: World in Conflict
Best Graphics: Gears of War (because 3/4 people that play games can't even run Crysis)
Best Action Game: Gears of War
Game of the Year: Gears of War
Gears of War: I found the storyline in Gears of War very very addicting and hard to put down. Every time I tell myself I will just finish this chapter and then go to sleep, every time the game pulls a surprising cutscene and makes me want to keep playing! The game is nearly perfect: loading time is not long, it is very very well optimized, way better than Crysis may I add; the music is INTENSE, I loved the music!
Bioshock: I've played the game. The first time I've played it, I uninstalled the game after about 10 hours of playing it. Did not like it at all. The storyline wasn't that interesting. It's kind of like Doom games (so is Gears to some degree). And the graphics looked more animated and less realistic than Gears.
Crysis: Not many people have desktops with a graphics card that costs $800, so not many people can play it and enjoy it like the few that invest a fortune into a computer. -
If the Witcher didn't win best RPG then the award would almost certainly have gone to NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer. Unless I'm terribly mistaken it was released around the same time as the Witcher or slightly earlier.
This really was the year of the FPS, at least 4 top quality titles released in the span of a few months. It wouldn't be too controversial to award at least one of them Game of the Year. -
eh I sort of disagree with IGN (For once). IMHO Bioshock was a fantastic game but as a shooter I don't think it should of won that category. GOTY is fair but CoD4 should of got best shooter. Best multiplayer between CoD4 and WiC is also a bit of a tossup. I mean WiC had great multiplayer for the casual player but it got repetive over a few months and the fact that teams were always uneven and people can join and leave as they liked without ending the game hampered the experience.
Anyone notice Gamespot's award nominations? The witcher wasn't nominated for best story or surprising game of the year. -
bioshock was very underwhelming to me.
It had very impressive voice acting but it was killing the same 6 enemies in a maze over and over.
Not varied enough game play. needlessly long
graphics on par with like doom 3 or older. Maybe on par with the game fear but not like oblivion or crysis.
I didnt play enough of the other ones to compare but if its the best game that came out it was a bad year.
Ive heard the witcher is really cool buts its apples and oranges. -
I would have added COD4 also,Bioshock deserves the title,and I am sad that UT3 isn`t on the list.Here`s to GOTY2008 - Starcraft 2 of course

Best Strategy: World in Conflict
Best Graphics: Crysis
Best Action Game: Gears of War
Game of the Year: Bioshock(Excellent story, music, others) -

Bioshock was good but not great. I dunno I guess I just didn't get into it like everyone else. COD4 was my pick but whats interesting is that on the 360 COD4 won game of the year and bioshock and halo 3 were runner ups.
-
bioshock looked better on PC, maybe that was it?
IGN PC was all over bioshock/The witcher though ill admit it, i think the 360 team wrote the cod4 review. -
In all fairness, CoD4 did win it on X360, I'm sure they wanted to give nods to both games and determined that this was the way to do it.
I'm on my second run through Bioshock, and, although the enemies are admittedly repetitive, the pure immersive quality of the story is pefect; honestly, this is probably the best narrative I've ever seen in a video game, for the twists are amazing, and the brilliant artistic design and eerie sound help to back it up.
I didn't see much from the Orange Box (best developer nod to Valve for the "deal of the century"), but in all fairness that is 5 games bundled (i.e. there goes the rest of my Christmas vacation), not a single game.
The question is:
GOTY overall; will Mario Galaxy triumph, or will Bioshock or CoD4 win? I'm sure the overwhelming opinion on this board would be for the latter two, but I'm VERY impressed with Mario Galaxy (a bit easy) for the sheer polish of the thing and the goofy physics involved.
Obviosuly, this is just the opinion of those @ IGN, so no point in getting too riled up. -

I personally dont think WiC was all that great. I played crysis and it was fun, but it got repetitive. Supreme Commander I believe is a blast and well, I have to try CoD4
-
Fewmets is right...where on EARTH did the Orange Box love go?
ORANGE BOX!
My favorites this year have been Orange Box, Mass Effect, and Supreme Commander (and Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance). I'm looking forward to continuing Bioshock (got about 1/5 through a few months back), trying the Witcher, and maybe giving COD4 a shot. -
In all consideration, I`ve installed Bioshock in august and have not finished it yet. Never really got me going. Although I`ve said it was nice, I realise now that the only game that made me come back for more was HALF LIFE 2(all of them).
StormEffect, +rep for pointing that out. -

Oh, for strategy, they should have put GRAW2, that game is so frickin hard
