I bought this game probably in Dec 2011 [for $17] and didnt play it until yesterday. Over 1 year in my Steam collection until I played it! The reason I tried it is because I recently bought a TrackIR 5 from here: TrackIR :: head tracking view control immersion for flight racing and action simulator :: TrackIR :: Premium head tracking for gaming and I wanted to test games that used it!
Il-2 COD had very many bad initial reviews It was an unfinished game that needed many patches. But if you look on the Steam page updates the game was massively reworked on its Oct 18, 2012 patch. Initial reviews said it has poor framerates and was unplayable. After the Oct 2012 patch, I play it at 2560 x 1600 resolution, - many settings in high with 2x antialiasing and I get 59 fps rates while flying to battle [my gaming desktop is an i7 2600k with a Geforce 570 HD v.c., output to a Dell U3011 30 monitor]. But I was shooting at a bomber and as pieces were falling of my fps dropped to 8 fps for the short periods that I hit the bomber.
I tried the old Il-2 Sturmovik 1946 game and the graphics were a POS in this old game. But many Youtube videos of the older 1946 game show great game action, so I guess Ill play the 1946 game somewhat too.
I remember BITD on my old Athlon 2400 XP desktop with a Radeon X850 I played the old IL-2 original game and I thought it was great overall, and great graphics too. But the Steam 1946 game doesnt support 2560 x 1600 or 1920 x 1200 resolution so thats why I said it sucked .
Anyone here play the Il-2 Sturmovik series? How about the latest one?
Check these Youtube videos of the latest Cliffs of Dover game, it looks great!

Right now the game is a cheap $19.99 on Steam and its worth it! Do you think this is the BEST WW2 flight sim out there now?

killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
I'm planning to grab COD when it'll be on sale.
For now I dug out my old IL-2FB plus few addons. Thinking whenever I should install them again, since I'm not into combat simming any more.
I also played Airfix Dogfighter recently.

I don't always get 8 fps when shooting at stuff, like when I shot at some BF 109's it didn't slow down. But for most flight sims, using a TrackIR 5 Head Tracker helps the game A LOT!
Ok, IL-2 1946 is an OK game too... I got it to work at 1920 x 1440 resolution which is good enough and the graphics are ok for a 2006 era game. I get very high framerates on this game, over 100+. -

Hey HTWingNut - are you in America? The game page said it doesn't sell to North America...But did you still get it from USA?

Could one of the regulars here confirm whether the bugginess and poor performance has indeed been addressed, or whether this thread was astroturfing? I had really high hopes for Cliffs of Dover but was scared away by the initial reviews (both professional and user).

Well, OP did say it runs well for him.
Myself, well, I had to cut some things to make it playable (don't know how much FPS I get, but it runs well). I currently have a combination of high-med-low settings, but I will probably look into them again, see if I can make some better combinations.
I made a screenshot, but not very good one. I intended to post it here.
At the moment I'm installing IL-2FB+Aces+Pacific Fighters. Want to compare the picture I get with COD to max settings of those...
*finished installing IL-2. Computer asks to restart in order to install Starforce DRM crap. Oh crap!*
...games. Unfortunately I couldn't find any high res images of FB on the Internet, so I guess I'll have to find out for myself.
If older games will look better than what I have with COD, I'm gonna uninstall it and play FB & Co. Also it has another big advantage over COD - lotsa planes and moar war theaters!
But for 5 bucks Mitvol I will say - don't be such a strong stereotypical representative of your people and just buy the game! -

Hey Mitlov - don't be picky over a $5 game... $5 is like getting it FREE! ... So low in cost! That's a bargain bin price and I accumulated many games when they hit that price. Of course I do a youtube and game review prescreen to see if the game is junk first, then I buy it if it's good.
I play IL2 COD at 2560 x 1600 with most settings on high, and in general flying I'm really getting 59 fps. If you turn up details real high graphics slows down to 8 fps when you're taking off and there's a lot of dust clouds, or if there's a lot of damage detail going on when your shooting a plane.
It's totally worth more than $5. -

. Sorry forgot the smily face, was just joking.
I remember your previous posts regarding COD and they left the impression that you loathe the game. I still say 5$ isn't that much and if you don't really "mind" that money I would say "why not buy it and see for yourself." But if not, then I won't make you. 5$ are still money. 5 dollars here, 5 dollars, next thing you know you lose the track of it. Or try buying (although I don't think that would be possible) from "Euro Zone." That way it will be tad more than 3 bucks.
Played FB/Aces/PF just now. Damn, can't make them widescreen...
Gonna try out COD again.
InspiredE1705 any tips what I can leave and what I should turn off, so I could get a good picture, but also maintain a nice performance. -
I didn't look at it as a $5 thing, because I personally don't buy software from websites that I've never heard of that don't even officially do business in the US. So I was pondering dropping $20 for it on Steam if the patch had dramatically improved it since release. And I don't want to drop $20 "just to see" if a company had adequately fixed a fundamentally-flawed release.

^^^Seems fair. Here over the pond COD was already on sale few times (last Christmas it was ~6EUR). But I haven't heard about sales on it in the US. I think I read over at Steam forums it was still 20$ in the US when it was 6EUR in Europe. Someone might have to confirm it.
Had a quick 6x6 dogfight just now. runs pretty well for me. Two things that bug me - lags when I'm on ground (probably due to ground vehicles) and mouse cursor lags in cockpit. I think I have a reason for the last one - shadows. Those dynamic shadows sure looks nice, but I might turn them off if they turn out more troublesome.
So far what I've read on the Internet for some people it runs well on medium machines, while a lot of people still complain it lags on high end beasts. Different rigs - totally different experiences.
Dunno really Mitlov. I presume you'll be "flyin" on that Vaio with 540m.
In times like these it really sucks that devs don't release a demo for testing purposes. You could try an "unofficial" one (in no way I'm trying to push you on this action) if you really want this game and want to make sure it runs well before you unload 20 bucks.
But if you're not rushing, you might wait for the better times. Or you know, ask someone here to buy (with money back of course) it for you. I've done so already quite few times, had no problems. You're a regular here, so I think you won't have any troubles with that. -

Mitlov - your just hurting yourself big time not buying sales games from other sites other than Steam. I bought many games from others sites that gave a Steam code and there was no problem. And they didn't rip me off on unauthorized cc charges either. Get Games can be trusted.
My gaming rig is still pretty good for being 1.7 years old. But my Geforce 570 only has 480 Cuda cores yet it still fast enough for many games at 2560 x 1200, even the Batman games. Yeah, I lower the shadows because I hardly notice shadows and antialiasing only up to 2x, high settings at others and I'm getting good playable fps in COD.
IL-2 Cliffs of Dover Seems Like a Great Game!
