Very excited about this one... I am curious too, is it using a new engine separate from the Wings of Prey engine? I know things got a bit confusing when Wings of Prey came out and was based on the console version Birds of Prey... both fun games I highly recommend, but definitely not original IL2.

Also, I have another question I can't figure out.. Cliffs of Dover is going to require Steam from everything I can tell, which is awesome, but here's my question:

Steam shows a release date of April 19th for me, where as it's supposedly March 31st in Europe.

This site says they will sell it to me, with the REST OF WORLD copy on March 31st, for $5 cheaper too...

Just Flight - Product page for IL-2 Cliffs of Dover (PRE-ORDER - released 31/3)

So, will the key they sell me activate on Steam on release date they show, or on the Steam date? Confused...

is this game fun "arcadish" or its like real-life sim where you spend 30 minutes flying, can die from single hit and go out of ammo in 1 minute?

This is a simulation but I think it has an arcade mode too. You learn to improve your skill greatly because one wrong move can spell the end of 30 minutes of progress.

I may need a new stick so I can play this. Any suggestions? :)

Depends on if you want separate throttle and stick (and rudder) or just a single stick? Saitek X-52 is a good throttle and stick with rudder as twisting the stick. To be honest I actually liked using my Microsoft Force Feedback Pro with the original IL-2 because the force feedback was really well done.

It's completely different from Wings of Prey, am I right? I thought WoP wasn't great...it didn't have the amazing gameplay of the older IL-2. Graphics were good though.

Yes, supposed to be basically a remake of the original IL-2 as far as campaign, simulation, available aircraft, etc. Original IL-2 turned out to be an incredible beast of a game with so many aircraft and options. The nice thing about it, is it even runs well on my netbook! lol.

Wikipedia says this game is DX11 compatible. HTWingNut's system should be powerful enough to get most of the features running in DX11 mode with acceptable performance so screenshots and performance analysis would be nice.

Done! Absolutely. Will probably pre-order soon. Just don't like that Steam takes my money before I even have product available to download.

Yes, I was quite shocked, and my netbook has a really sucky GPU, the embedded one in the Atom N450, probably no better than but probably worse than the GMA 950. It has 2 pixel shaders, lol. I have to run at 800x600, details medium to low, but long draw distance (crucial really). But the nebook cost me ~$200 so I'm not complaining.

I found you can actually fly with the keyboard. It's not real easy, but fun for instant action against AI for 15 minutes or so.

edit: lol, I see you have an anemic netbook like mine.

Hmm, 800x600 details medium low...got it :) I thought I could only play Caesar III on my netbook haha.

Actually, I've been playing the IL-2 series with keyboards because I couldn't afford flight sticks, gamepads or any accessories like that back then.
